Last night on Top Chef, the quickfire challenge was to roll the craps dice and whatever number you get is the number of ingredients you have to use to create a dish. Most everyone wanted in the 6-8 range. Eve got the dreaded 3 while Kenny got for him, the dreaded 10. I think his name is Kenny. It might be Kevin or heck even Hank. Too many contestants at this point! There are a set of brothers competing this season. One of the brothers(Bryan) was in the least favorite dishes category and the other (Michael) won this challenge and got immunity and 15k. No one loses. The elimination challenge separates the men vs. the women in a battle of the sexes. The men must cook for a bachelorette party and the women cook for a bachelor party. Each team will meet with their host for 10 minutes to help plan a menu. The bachelorette only eats seafood, but some of her guests eat meat and one is a vegan. The bachelor likes meat! There are at least 2 lesbians on the girls team that we know of (I think there is at least 3, but 2 are open about it) and one of them, Ashley, is not happy about this battle. She says that she is angry that the government will only recognize straight marriages and since she can't get married, she is against this challenge. I don't agree with her reasoning and why she is so angry about the Challenge. The marriage issue, yes, but not the challenge. Its not Top Chef's law. She does continue bitching about it to Preeti and the blonde chick (who I believe is also gay - no offense). They both agree with her, but not so angrily. Preeti is embarassed that she isn't MORE upset. Anyway, they get on with the cooking. Each person makes their own dish after going to Whole Foods (whose stock is way the f up). When they go to bring the food to the venue, they find out its an OUTDOOR party. This ruins a lot of hopes and dreams since now they have to deal with Las Vegas outdoors and food! I'd go crazy stating what each person made at this point in the game, but lets just say that the boys team wins and the favorite dishes were prepared by Eli, Hector, Bryan and Michael (the brothers). Bryan wins with his dish. It was a meringue puff filled with guacamole. The ladies lose and the bottom 4 are Jesse, Eve, Preeti, and Ashley. Ashley had extra time during the challenge so she had decided to make a second dish which did not do well with the judges. The other girls had told her to just stick to the one dish and make that one well. She did do that, but since her second dish sucked, it negated the delicious original dish so she ended up in the bottom. Jesse was in the bottom last week, but did well in the quikfire. Eve was in the bottom during both the quikfire and this challenge and her dish of octopus and shrimp sent her home packing. Edited by squishybut, Aug 27 2009, 09:07 AM.

Oh yeah, I forgot, the dishes for the party must compliment one of 3 shots they are serving. One is Tequila, one is a gingery shot, and one a sickly sweet yellow shot. |

Last night on Top Chef: Guest judge is Mark Peel of Campanile restaurant in Los Angeles. He was also one of the chefs on Top Chef Masters. The quickfire challenge is to create a delicious, unique dish made from potatoes. The cheftestants are given a huge table full of every kind of potato and 45 minutes. The least favorites were a soup made by Jesse, a savory sweet potato and cayenne blend, but she added too much cayenne and didn't have time to fix it. Jesse has a thing with soups. She makes them a lot. Also, the guy from Miami who has the really huge cajun accent made some cod wrapped in sweet potato which had no taste, but they did like his side of leeks. Can't remember who the 3rd bottom was. The chef's favorites was Jennifer who made a mussel dish and used potatoes 3 ways. One of which was a potato broth. Ash, who was trying to make a sweet potato ice cream, but couldn't get the ice cream to freeze and ended up with a puree with candied walnuts. he was cracking up the entire time because in his eyes his dish failed and he was a finalist. the third dish was Ashley's who made a potato and mushroom something. The winner was Jennifer. Sadly, this time there was no 15k prize, but she did win immunity. To announce the elimination challenge a colonel from the Thunderbirds arrives. He tells them they will be cooking as one team for 300 military personnel and their families. The twist is that they won't know what they have to work with until the following day. The cheftestants decide that they will each pair up and each pair will create one dish and since there is an odd number and jennifer is immune, she will act as head chef and run the kitchen. This is the smartest idea I have ever heard on reality tv. The Chef's pair up and I don't know all the names to list them. Once they get on the base, they realize that what they have to work with is what is in the mess. There are no burners, no pots and pans, very little fresh foods, giant cans of well, canned food and dried spices. Instead of a stove they have huge woks to cook over and also huge cauldrons. Each team starts planning their dish and they have 4 hours. Jennifer does a holy crap wonderful job organizing, giving opinions on dishes, keeping the work flowing, and is just killer at her task. The one big issue that came down at the end of the time allotted is that there were only a limited number of ovens and cooking areas and some teams were hogging them and some teams were falling behind because they couldn't get to fire. Jesse and the guy she was paired with, Don, Dan, Bob, I think Don decided to make clam chowder (see the girl has soup issues!). At this point I am telling my bf that Jesse is goin home. She has been in the bottom in nearly every competition. One of the brothers, Mike? and his partner Mike? make a bacon dish that is truly unique and I was salivating at home. They took a giant slab of bacon (uncut) and braised it. They served it at a carving station nestled atop a piece of romaine heart with a sauce. OMG, what I wouldn't have given last night to taste that. It also got GLOWING reviews. They ended up also making a "greek shrimp salad" which had no flavor. If you haven't learned yet, stick to ONE dish! My goodness people! Kevin and Eli from ATL (whooooo!) made a down home pulled pork shoulder served with a southern potato salad. This dish also made me hungry. It was also a favorite. Kevin lets us know his family competes in BBQ cook offs so it was easy for him. Preeti and Laurine make a boring pasta salad. The only fresh, not canned, ingredients was broccoli. Bad reviews. The clam chowder was good, but too creamy. Bad choice for Las Vegas heat. Ashley and Ash make a chocolate and peanut butter bread pudding. It got mediocre reviews. Hector and Robin make a 3 bean chicken chili and it got really good reviews. Bryan and Mattin make a steak with mushroom sauce and cauliflower gratin. I also could have eaten that. Yum-O. At judges table, the winning teams are Eli and Kevin and Mike and Mike. Mike the unbrother, tells the judges, not knowing that they hated the shrimp pasta, that he had very little to do with the bacon dish and that the pasta salad was all his. I side comment that this was the first nail in his coffin. Dumbest move by a contestant so far, although Preeti is getting up there in dumb moves. You see the knowing looks on the judges faces. They love everything the GA boys made and still loved the unique way Mike made the pork belly. Mike is declared the winner. To note, he also won the 2nd quickfire and I think the first elimination challenge. Other Mike is told to stay and the rest are to head back and bring out Preeti and Laurine. Mike is in shock. So, not only was his team the winner, he is in the bottom 3. LOL. Laurine admitted, barely (she was protecting Preeti (stupid)) that she wasn't happy with their vegetarian pasta dish. BTW, it was farfale, broccoli, red onion, jarred red peppers and sundried tomatoes. That it. Talk about phoning it in! On the other hand, Preeti, like last week, stood behind her dish. These judges like it when you admit you messed up and know what went wrong. it shows that you know what you cooked wasn't up to snuff. laurine tried to be valiant and she shouldn't have. It showed weakness and the judges felt like she forgot it was a competition. Mike was sent through the wringer on his pasta dish and he ended up angry and defensive. But, Preeti's reluctance to agree that her dish sucked (for the second time) ended up sending her home. Guess what? Jesse survived another week! The ones to watch are Mike and Kevin, IMO.
