I was not really thrilled with tonight’s episode. It seemed like a gratuitous attempt to prolong the season. For those with short memories we were taken on a trip through the entire season to date. I will not insult your memories or intelligence by wading through once again who was sent home when. Suffice to say, our two finalists are Christina, a culinary student and Petrozza a catering chef.

The first order of business was to divide the dining room in half giving each finalist the opportunity to design their dream restaurant. Christina seemed very sure of herself and appeared to know exactly what she wanted. When shown wallpaper she said she preferred stripes. Petrozza was sure of one thing … he wanted flowers … he loves flowers.

Next they were off to prepare their menus. Again Christina was sure of herself and knew what she wanted. She finished while Petrozza had only two entries on his list.

We also had the typical Chef Ramsay ‘let’s make these two nervous’ moment when he said he was concerned about whether or not he had the best two finalists … the commercial break adds to the moment and we come back to hear Ramsay say he KNOWS he has the best two in the finals.

He also told Petrozza he was the messiest chef to ever cook in Hell’s Kitchen. Christina on the other had set a better record … she won 9 of the challenges (some solo and some as part of the winning team) … something nobody else had ever done.

Okay … quick trip to New York City …. Time Square and a welcome to the finalists up in lights. Then off to Ramsay’s NYC London restaurant where they were told to create their signature dishes. Sorry, these names get over my head but Christina made a dish with New York Strip and Petrozza did a fillet with caramelized onion risotto.

Five of Ramsay’s chef’s from around the world judged the dishes. Petrozza got two votes right away and then Christina received two consecutive votes. Petrozza wins when the head chef of London’s chose his dish.

His reward is having first pick of the former contestants who will help them in the finale. Just before heading out the doors to return to LA, they are surprised by a visit from Whoopie Goldberg.

Back to Hell’s Kitchen and we have two very different reactions to the work that was done while they were away. Petrozza absolutely loved his restaurant. Christina absolutely hated hers. She kept repeating she hated the stripes and didn’t know there would be stripes (of course we get a replay of her choosing the stripes) and to make matters worse Petrozza’s fireplace is too big for his restaurant so the contractor tells/asks Christina that they need to move the wall further into her side of the restaurant so it will fit.

Christina asks for a do over on her side and the contractor agrees to do it. Then both finalists present their menus for the big night to the sous chefs.

Bobby, Ben, Matt, Jen, Corey and Louross enter the kitchen ... they will be the staff for the next round of competition. Rather than go back and forth I will just say Petrozza chose Bobby and Ben, while Christina chose Corey and Louross. Still standing and waiting for Petrozza’s final pick are Matt and Jen. Neither side wants either of them. Christina is praying he will choose Jen. However to find out who goes where we must wait for next week’s episode.

It is really hard to make this sound enjoyable when it just wasn’t. I had almost decided not to even write a recap but … obviously I changed my mind. I am a little disillusioned after finding out the winner does not actually become an executive chef …. Even though after listening quite closely that is exactly what Ramsay told the two finalists the big prize was … the position of executive chef at his new LA restaurant.

Just because I didn’t enjoy this episode, don’t tune out yet. Next week promises to be quite exciting … if for no other reason we will find out who got stuck with Jen, who is still saying she was the best chef in the competition and she intends to show Ramsay he made a mistake sending her home.

Oh, by the way … the title of this recap is the words of wisdom Ramsay passed on to Christina and Petrozza. Maybe you would also be interested in knowing they flew to NYC in a private jet … which was actually pretty cool.
