As we began our journey in Hell’s Kitchen this year it became apparent very early that Chef Ramsay had his favorites already picked out. It makes me wonder if we couldn’t have just jumped to the final two and foregone all the swearing and bickering and backstabbing.

BUT WAIT … everything may not be as you expected

Tonight we began where we left off last week. Along with me, the 3 finalists were celebrating the demise of their nemesis Jen. I find it so distasteful (pun intended) that she lasted as long as she did. One of Ramsay’s starting favorites? Hard to say but he did give her chance after chance after chance to get everyone to hate her … and they did.

A new day dawns full of promise and surprises. As Christina, Corey and Petrozza enter the kitchen hardly knowing what to expect for their final competition, they are pleasantly surprised to discover Chef Ramsay was going to prepare them breakfast. However the surprises don’t stop there … they will be eating the meal prepared by Ramsay with their very own loved ones. Christina shares her meal with mom and dad, Petrozza with girlfriend and his dad, and Corey with her mom and boyfriend.

Petrozza and Corey are very caught up in reconnecting with their loved ones and barely notice what they are eating. On the other hand, Christina is trying to figure out where the competition will figure into this event. She pays close attention to the dish Ramsay has prepared. On one ingredient her mom disagrees with her. Mom thinks there is cream in the dish and Christina does not.

No big surprise but Christina nailed it. When their families left, Ramsay told them they had 45 minutes to recreate the dish he had prepared for their breakfast. He gave them one serving to sample. Corey and Petrozza immediately chose Buffalo and Christina chose venison … Petrozza changed to venison very quickly.

When they were finished Ramsay complimented them on how the food looked. After having each describe what they had used in recreating his dish, he told Corey she nailed the raspberry stuff she put in but failed by choosing the wrong meat so she was out of the competition. Once again we are down to Petrozza and Christina and once again Christina comes out victorious. She missed the cream but Petrozza missed the puree completely.

The punishment .… bar duty. Cleaning up and CHIPPING ice, for the evening.

The reward … a special dinner across town with Ramsay and a sightseeing tour.

Christina exited HK looking awesome in one of the outfits she bought last week. The only negative she felt was that her parents couldn’t join them … UNTIL she walked out and saw her parents standing with Ramsay beside the bus.

Though Corey and Petrozza didn’t relish the idea of doing the chores they were assigned there was so little complaining compared to when Jen lost. Corey actually threw in a little humor, saying while chipping the ice she sometimes pretended it was Jen she was chipping away at.

Just before the doors opened for the evening Ramsay once again congratulated all of them. He also informed them each would be taking a turn at the hot plate tonight. What he didn’t tell them was that his two sous chefs would be sabotaging some of the dishes they prepared.

He also called each one up for a little last minute training on the hot plate. Petrozza was given assertiveness training, Corey was told she was being too nice and Christina was told she was acting like a cheerleader. He wished them all luck and opened Hell’s Kitchen.

Petrozza was the first one on the pass. He did not give a very good performance. Chef Scott served risotto without the peas and Petrozza never noticed. Ramsay had to finally point it out to him. During his time at the hot plate Christina served raw salmon and burned the scallops. Ramsay jumped all over her and asked if she wanted to go home. She was literally falling apart. Everything she touched went bad. Needless to say Petrozza was upset because he felt it made him look bad.

Corey got her chance to run the kitchen next. She also neglected to find the wrong sauce was served with the Wellington until AFTER she had already poured it over the meat. She also failed to see there was a missing entrée on a service for six. Ramsay sent her back to her station and called Christina up next.

Christina did very well on the hot plate. She found the wrong seasoning in the potatoes immediately. Of the three finalists she was the best at running the kitchen and sort of redeemed herself for the mistakes at her station.

The service was completed and completed well. Ramsay congratulated them again. He told them however, he had no idea who the finalists would be. (I am thinking here, he knows exactly who the finalists will be and his next set of instructions were for show only) He told them they had not made the choice easy for him and he was not going to make it easy for them. They were all to go back to their room and each select one person for elimination.

An aside here. I think for most of the people watching this season, it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that Corey would make it to the final two and probably win the whole thing. Petrozza had his good and bad moments but come through in the crunch so it became obvious, at least to me a number of weeks ago that he would also be in the final two. Then something happened. Christina began winning challenges. Ramsay actually appeared to really like her. Did this culinary student actually have a chance at upsetting the applecart and winning out over either of the more experienced chefs?

Most would say no. She was just eye candy and someone who pleasantly rounded out the final days of the show but not someone with any actual hope of winning or even going to the final two. The nominations seemed to prove this out.

Corey nominated Christina because she was like a deer caught in headlights when she was reprimanded.
Christina nominated Corey because even though she was a strong team member she didn’t have leadership skills.
Petrozza nominated Christina because she couldn’t get the food out.

Another note here. Earlier Christina and Corey, who began this game gunning for each other admitted they liked each other and enjoyed working together.

Ramsay told them this was his most difficult decision. He liked and was proud of all of them. This is his least favorite part of the show…but someone has to go home.

Hang on to your chopping blocks cooking fans, the final two are about to be announced.

The first finalist is …. no surprise here … Petrozza.

Knowing what was coming next (after all she got two nominations) you could see the disappointment on Christina’s face. Both she and I knew her time on the show had come to an end.

The second finalist is ……………………… way long pause ……………………. Christina!

WHAT … did I hear correctly? Pause, rewind, forward … second finalist is Christina … wow .. that was the biggest surprise of the season … for me, Corey, Petrozza and Christina. So I ask you, in all seriousness …. did Hell freeze over?

Lots of sloppy encouragement to Corey … yada yada yada …. And the final two get a peek at what is in store for them next week … redecorating Hell’s Kitchen and choosing between evicted chef’s to be on their team … by the way … Christina whispered to Corey she wanted her on her team.

Can it get any better than this? The student and the experienced chef battle it out to gain the position as executive Chef of Ramsay’s new restaurant …. Now this is a battle you won’t want to miss.

I actually enjoyed watching Corey get fired tonight. She has been so supercilious that she is unbearable! I have been enjoying the idea of Corey so angry that she got canned and Christina is in the final 2. I'll bet that woman throws everything she can find for the next 12 hours.
The oddity of the thing is that Corey and Christina clicked together very well in the kitchen. Say what you want about Christina's experience, she always came back and corrected herself.
Of the three, Christina was the only one on her toes tonight concerning the signature dish that Ramsay served them and their families for breakfast. By the way, this was breakfast wasn't it? I didn't catch the name for the dish either. It was something with grilled venison and shallots as its base, with a white bean puree and finished with a glace de viande flavored with framboise and finished with cream. I have eaten some strange things for breakfast, but no matter who cooked it, this would not have been my first choice. Additionally, I would have had trouble getting my family members to sit there and eat it, I think. For the record, raspberry flavors go great with venison so maybe it wasn't so bad after all.

When Christina won the competition (she added aioli (garlic mayonnaise) to the concoction!) I was kind of surprised, but she did get the white bean puree correct although she left out the cream. Petrozza lost because he forgot to add any puree at all and Corey guessed the meat wrong with buffalo. Corey has a better palate than that. Still, Corey was the only one to guess that the glace had a bit of framboise in it.
She got a nice lunch out with Ramsay and her parents. Corey and Petrozza had to first chip ice blocks and then polish glasses. Ho hum!
At dinner, they each took their turn at the hot plate or the pass, calling the orders and sending them out to diners. Surprisingly I thought that Corey would be a natural. (I half expected her boyfriend to be an emasculated wuss) but she was the weakest. Christina has to make herself yell. Ramsay hurt her feelings when he said she sounded like a cheerleader. I could see her eyes well up with tears. Nevertheless, she got the idea. Petrozza was pretty good, but you can tell it doesn't come naturally to him.

At the service, Christina messed up the scallops first and then undercooks the salmon. I thought she might have a melt down but she pulled it together. Petrozza did miss that Chef Scott left the peas out of the risotto, but he does send back Christina's fish. He was very natural at the position also.
When Corey ran the pass, she sauced the Wellington before she realized the sauce was wrong. I give her credit for getting it at least before it went out. nevertheless, ramsay gave her a hard time and she had trouble reading the orders. She did catch that Jean-Philippe sent the order in with 6 appetizers and only 5 entrees.
When Christina ran the pass, she discovered the wrong herbs in the potatoes. Unless I missed it, there was supposed to be mint in the potatoes rather than basil. Really? Mint in mashed potatoes? Sorry but that sounds awful. I happen to like basil and garlic in mashed potatoes but I digress.
For the record I thought it was highly unfair that Chef Scott, when Christina yelled at him for not having the food ready, muttered loud enough to hear that if she yelled at him again, he would have to come up and slap her around. I thought that this was very unprofessional to say this and show this. I am no feminist, but it wouldn't have happened if Petrozza had been up at the pass.
Anyway now we are down to someone who is apparently a new graduate from culinary school and a guy who has been around forever, 24 years her senior. Still I won't forget the first dish he made, that cornish hen in a pumpkin with greasy potatoes. Christina has a nice touch with food and a gifted palate, but to hire her for a high dollar position at R's restaurant? Well, let's just watch and see.
By the way, next week we go through the boring part where they redecorate half of HK and then go to Las Vegas. Wheee!
Did you see the previews of some of the chefs coming back to help? Jen looked mean and Matt looked psychotic so maybe it will be more interesting than we think.

From what's been said on the show, it has never been clarified if Christina is a 'graduate' or still a student. Under her name it always says 'culinary student' ... she just might have a chance if she doesn't get stuck with Jen on her team.

Curious about what Chairo asked, whether in fact Christina was a culinary school graduate or not, I located her MySpace page. I will warn you that it contains a spoiler (apparently)which I will not reveal here. However, at the time of the filming she was NOT a graduate and was in fact taking time off from the CIA in Hyde Park, New Yawk. She had already worked in several restaurants apparently.

Chairo stated "battle it out to gain the position as executive Chef of Ramsay’s new restaurant". That was what was originally indicated but more recently I have heard that the position title is actually Executive Sous Chef, which is a very different responsibility.

I don't know how to respond to apskip's post because Ramsay has always referred to position the winners will receive is that of "Executive Chef" and continues to say they will be 'running' the restaurant.

Past winners (with the exception of the first who chose to spend a year studying under Ramsay) all became executive chef's of the restaurants they were promised on the show.

If the position being offered is less than what we are being told then the network needs to set things straight. However if I could earn 250,000 a year and have less responsibilities than I assumed I would have .. what could be better

It would seem that the resultant prize is less than an executive chef's position. From another website's archives:
But the new press release points out that last season’s “winner Heather West is currently working as senior chef at Terra Rossa restaurant. The restaurant’s web site even says she is “working under the leadership of Executive Room Chef Renato DePirro.” Yes, senior chef, not the promised executive chef.
A further quote says that: A reservations agent told me this morning that she had a one-year contract, and left after that expired.
From Wikipedia on Heather:
Quote:

As of April 2008, Heather West has been a chef at the Broadway Grill in Seattle, Washington...During production, West became friends with fellow contestant Rachel Brown, who came in seventh place — both are openly lesbian. Brown died in May 2007.

Brown's death was apparently a suicide, but this was the first I heard of it and wanted to pass it on. God bless her.

FWIW, Broadway Grill isn't exactly haute cuisine, judged by its reviews. One reviewer described it as a "gay Denny's."
It is disappointing that the results of the show aren't all that they seem.

With that said, I find it almost beyond common sensibilities to believe that these winners actually move into the position of an executive chef's position at these prestigious restaurants. Typically executive chefs cook very rarely. Some of these cooks are just in their prime. It would seem that Ramsday's histrionics aren't the only thing staged on these shows.

Yeah JB miracles happen ... now however, not sure it really matters since the offered positions are not the ones being given, and even after the fact, Ramsay still refers to past winners as 'executive' chefs and 'running their own restaurants' which is a far cry more than where they seem to end up.

I think the only one who made out ... from appearances ... is the first year's winner who chose to study with Ramsay and NOW DOES have his own restaurant. I have never understood how most of the dunces on HK could ever run a hotdog stand ... never mind a 4/5 star restaurant ... BUT I believed it to be true because that was the hook ...

You know, it's almost sweeter that Corey ALMOST made it only to have it snatched from her arrogant little hands! *insert evil giggle here*
