Easin' into summertime...

It's Wednesday night and I'm feeling very Carrie Bradshaw-like. Maybe it's because I've seen the movie three times, maybe it's because I get to write the season 4 premiere recap of this show or maybe, just maybe it's because I borrowed a pair of Jimmy Choos and I'm wearing them with a pair of men's boxers and a lace camisole while drinking a pretty pretty princess (recipe later). I'm psyched for this season because there are only a few dancers I can remember by name and instance coming into tonight's show and they are all for very different reasons. Some, like Courtney who auditioned in Wisconsin and has a mom for an instructor is one of my faves from audition week. Another is Matt who did his oh-so-quirky solo in Vegas to Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody and I fell in love instantly. Twitch stands out because he's come back from last season just being edged out by Hoc. There are those I remember that I just didn't like and couldn't understand why they made it and not others. I won't mention any names, but if a certain school teacher from Miami doesn't bring it, I will start the brigade to get her OUT and I don't care who her partner is. That'll teach Nige!l :angry

Ooh, the show is starting and Cat does not disappoint with tonight's wardrobe selection. She has chosen a gold sparkly baby doll mini that shows off her giraffe-like legs and stunning spray tan. I just wish whoever is doing her hair would do something that holds up to the caliber of beauty that Cat is, tonight's was just WRONG! :(

Our judges for this evening's show is Nigel, Mary and Dan Karaty. Dan was absent from the Vegas round because the panel was jammed back with our new husband and wife hip-hop duo and Debbie Allen who bowed out after getting her boy into the top 20. More on that later. Dan points out after being asked that there doesn't appear to be any front-runners this season and that the crown is up for grabs. Nigel reminds us that due to unfair editing there are five or six contestants that we haven't really met or gotten to know yet so they are at a disadvantage and have to work extra hard. You ever notice it's never one of the big personalities?

We get to see some great moments from the auditions and Vegas round. I don't know why but already I'm on the verge of a crying jag. I just refill my martini glass and hit play on the TiVo to see who is up first.

Rayven and Jamie Raveyn is our oldest dancer at 28 and she's a contemporary/ballet dancer and her partner Jamie is the west coast swing guy whose partner didn't make the cut. They are dancing to our hip-hop duet's choreography to "American Boy" by Estella featuring Kanye West.

What takes me by surprise is that this is a hip-hop routine and it's very up-beat and happy. I really like the choreography and I think for two people so far removed from this genre' of dance they really pull it off. But it's just the beginning so I'll reserve my comments until the end. I did enjoy the dance.

Judges say: Judges aren't over-enthusiastic probably because it's only the first act. Karaty is Debbie Downer tonight. He tries to sound like he's all bad-ass, but he's just a boy-band choreographer and knows it's real good so I think he's just hatin'.

Susie and Marquis Susie is our high school teacher from Miami who is a "salsa" dancer and her partner is an 18 year old contemporary dancer. They are performing the smooth waltz choreography by Hunter Johnson to "Dark Waltz" by Hayley Westenre.

I thought it was pretty but forgetable. There was nothing done in this dance make it stand out.

Judges say: Nigel does the hard sell on Susie feeling like a wrong decision was made Nige? and gives Marquis some props for holding his own. Mary loves anything done in her genre' and Dan thought it was nice.

Kourtni and Matt Kourtni is my Midwest gal who did a knock-out performance at the Wisconsin auditions and Matt is one of those guys who didn't get a lot of air time during the audition process. Together they are 13 feet tall. They are doing a Mandy Moore Jazz routine to Soft Cell's "Tainted Love".

They do a Bond-esque type choreography around a diamond. I thought they both looked great but their lifts were anything but effortless. I was hoping for a homer, but they only got a double at this time at bat.

Judges: Judges are split. Mary said that the lifts looked heavy.

Chelsea & Thayne These two contemporary dancers both stood out for me during Vegas week for different reasons. I didn't remember her during the auditions, but remarked how gorgeous she was and was really glad she made it. Thayne had some pretty incredible choreography during his solos during auditions and Vegas. They are dancing the Cha-Cha-Cha to a Tony Meredith choreographed number. "Oye Como Va" Celia Cruz.

I thought Thayne made this number work. He worked his hips and shoulders like the rent was due. Chelsea is stunning to watch moving across the floor, but I thought her movements were quite stiff compared ot Thayne's.

Judges: They were slipping all over the platform due to the drool created when Chelsea started dancing. They couldn't praise this girl enough. They said that Thayne did well partnering her, but she was the star of the production. I think they need an instant replay and STAT!

Chelsie and Mark Chelsie comes from the ballroom and Mark is from Hawaii where contemporary dance is a little different from what it is on the main-land. Mia Michaels is their choreographer and they are dancing to "Beautiful" by Me'Shell Ndegeocello.

Funky, but I liked it...is what I put down on my commentary sheet. In the section at the beginning where we get to see them practicing with Mia, she looks as if choosing Mark was a huge mistake. He seemed to have finally grasped it because it was haunting and beautiful choreography as only Mia Michaels can do. I have to wonder if it would have been as cool without the costume and lights. :S

Judges: They have to praise Mia for her choreography the woman has won the show an Emmy for crying out loud. They give the contestants their credit too and it's good.

Kherington and Twitch One is a contemporary youngster still in high school and the other is our favorite returning hip-hop dancer. They will be doing a Tyce DiOrio choreographed Broadway number. "Too Darn Hot" Kiss Me Kate soundtrack.

That was fun! Twitch was amazing. Reminded me of a young Gregory Hines in parts. Kherington pulled it off, but I thought somebody with a little more maturity could have made it smoulder!!

Judges: Loved it. Gave Twitch the praise he needed and over-praised Kherington.

Comfort and Chris She is a hip-hop artist full ON and he is a contemporary dancer who Nigel said had the personality of a tree. Kind of harsh but in light of some of the huge personality showing up this season, I could see where his motivation was coming from. They were given a Tony Meredith choreographed Jive number. "Boom Boom" Big Head Todd and the Monsters.

I really wanted this to explode. I absolutely adore this girl's personality. The dance seemed to be in slow motion for me. Her comment at the end about dancing in bra, panties and beads was absolutely adorable. I thought she turned it out being such a tomboy and all, but he just had a hard time keeping up with her.

Judges agreed with me... :smug

Katee and Joshua She is a contemporary dancer who the judges judged too harshly in the end and he is a hip-hop dancer. He gets lucky and they pull the "hip hop" card for their first dance. "No Air" Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown

Choreography was killer and the two of them made it WORK! This is by far my favorite dance of the night. He is so Smooth! She stayed right with him from top to bottom. Loved IT!

Judges: Across the board loved it.

Jessica and Will Both contemporary dancers I don't remember her, but he's the one that Debbie Allen sacrificed herself from being on the judges panel so he could be on the show. Puh-lease Tango choreographed by Hunter Johnson. "Tango" Cirque de Soleil

She was all over the place and he was too over-the-top for me. Looked very karaoke (if that's possible" and her hair was done by whomever does Cat's hair. They really need to fire this person

Judges: Nigel pointed out Jessica's wobbling with every planted step but gave Will props for his "manliness". Mary gushed way too much and even proclaimed they were the "couple to beat" :O Danny Downer just enjoyed it.

Courtney and Gev She's a contemporary dancer and he's a B-Boy. I don't really remember either one of them. They have a Disco number choreographed by Doriana Sanchez. "Boogie Wonderland" Earth, Wind & Fire.

Meh. I still think that Nick's in Season 1 was the all time best disco number on this show. I have yet to see anybody compare to it. These guys were only a few steps above last season's innaugural disco number by the hip-hop dude who was paired with Sabra early on.

Judges: Split...

That's it. That was the show. It was pretty good and the level of dancing is intense. Now they are stuck trying to master entertaining a kazillion fans enough to pick up the phone. I didn't, did you?

Recipe for Pretty Pretty Princess: 1 liter glass container filled 1/4 way with ice, cover ice with gin (preferably tangueray) and fill remainder with Crystal Light Pink lemonade. Put in a martini glass with a twist of lemon.

What do you think the potential of there being some really talented dancers on America's Got Talent 3? I think they will definitely have some great dancers this season and very different styles of dance than So You Think You Can Dance offers. I'm looking forward to all of the other original acts as well! I heard they have this great gymnast who does these crazy tricks on a hand held beam! June 17th is going to be two hours of entertaining TV on NBC...
