As far as the east is from the west … that was the difference in tonight’s dances. The gentle and elegant Viennese Waltz and powerfully dramatic Pasa Doble, brought cheers or tears to the eyes. First we welcomed back the lovely Samantha Harris and bid farewell to Drew Lachey. As good as Drew was at filling in for Samantha is was nice to have the woman’s touch back. Mark and Kym were up first with the Viennese Waltz performed to Mr. Bojangles. During rehearsal Kym mentions that Mark writes everything he is supposed to do down on paper. She told him when he is finished he needs to throw it away and feel the dance. Once on stage I was really impressed with Mark’s dancing tonight. He isn’t going to win this competition but if the judging was based on heart and determination he’d walk away with the award hands down. It was great to see him interact with his daughter and you could see in her eyes that he will always be a winner to her. The judges however do not judge on heart and determination but rather on technique. They had this to say about Mark’s performance of the Viennese Waltz. Len: You practiced with your eyes shut so I decided to judge you with my eyes shut …. no that was a joke. This was the best dance you have done in the competition. Bruno: You started off well but lost the rhythm in spots. You are improving and doing a good job. Carrie Ann: I am glad you didn’t sing tonight. You are like the little engine who could and it was fun to watch. The judges scores: Carrie Ann – 7; Len – 7; Bruno – 8 Total 22/30 Though my vote doesn’t count I would have given Mark an 8 The first Pasa Doble of the evening was performed to perfection by Sabrina and Mark. This dance was exciting to watch and I personally was sorry to see it end. Sabrina blows my mind with the way she dances once she is on stage versus the cut up she is during rehearsals. She reminds me of Jim Nabors who sang with such a deep voice but spoke with that high pitched squeak … she cuts up and really seems to make light of everything during rehearsal but once she is on the stage she becomes a real dancer. Carrie Ann thought the dance had power, passion and perfection. Bruno said she was a lynx on attack .. it was incredible Len says she sets her own standards and he finds himself looking for mistakes but tonight there were no mistakes to be found. The judges scores: Carrie Ann – 10; Len – 10; Bruno – 10 giving Sabrina the first perfect score of the season 30/30 (Just for the record I gave her a 10 first) We got to see a little more into the life of Jane Seymore tonight when she revealed that in addition to her many other talents she is also an artist. She and Tony did a painting with their feet as they rehearsed the Viennese Waltz and it was actually quite striking. However Jane turned me off a bit with some of her self assured comments among them being that they would give the judges an masterpiece dance tonight. They danced to “Piano Man” and though I am not a huge fan of this dance I thought it was pretty good. Having said that however, as a novice, even I noticed a couple of missteps so my score is an 8. Carrie Ann began her first of many complaints about the dancers doing lifts and her intentions of deducting a point for them. She thought the dance was gorgeous and a masterpiece but the lift was against the rules. Both Jane and Tony argued the point, but again, being a novice, I noticed that at least once both of Jane’s feet were off the floor for an instant. I also learned tonight that the definition of a lift is something a dancer cannot do by themselves. Jane and Tony definitely by that definition did a lift. Len said that tonight was a ‘lift free zone’ for him … Carrie Ann asked how, as the head judge he could make that allowance … he went on to say the dance was all romance. She had beautiful arms but a couple of missteps. Bruno said she was the queen of the fairies and it was exquisite. The judges scores: Carrie Ann – 8; Len – 9; Bruno – 9 Total 26/30 (After the scores were announced they did a replay of the part of the dance containing the lift … even though for a second or two both feet were off the floor they still denied that it happened. The moment Jane pointed out was not when I saw both feet lifted, but a few seconds before that … in my humble opinion) Floyd and Karina drew the Pasa Doble for the nights competition. Before rehearsal they visited a school whose students had sent them a large sign that said “Floyd and Karina keep dancing” Excerpts from last week showed just how upset Floyd was with his score. Personally I think it was deserved. I do think Wayne needed to go first but next should be Floyd and tonight’s performance has not changed my opinion. I would have given him a 6. He reminds me of a bull in a china shop and I do not enjoy watching his antics. Len said he always comes out at 100 percent and gives his all. He did a good job and it was great entertainment. Bruno said he went from being a bulldozer to bull fighter. He stayed in character throughout the dance Carrie Ann said they also did a lift but he was most improved and had good posture. The scores: Carrie Ann – 7; Len – 8; Bruno – 8 Total score 23/30 Mel B and Maks danced the Viennese Waltz. During rehearsal it is often hard to figure out who is actually in control. They tried some meditation but Maks felt all it accomplished was giving him an hour of silence. I was not impressed with the performance but it was better than I had expected. My score 8. Bruno said that ‘sweet dreams are made of this’ and that Mel B continues to surprise him Carrie Ann thought it was an incredible transformation. It was sensual and elegant but her timing needs work. Len said it was a revelation. There were a couple of missed steps but it was bloody well done. The scores: Carrie Ann – 8; Len – 9; Bruno – 8 Total score 26/30 Cameron and Edyta were given the theme from Superman as the music for their Pasa Doble and Edyta had a very difficult time trying to choreograph a Pasa Doble to the music. She became frustrated and it seemed for awhile this would not bode well for Cameron. However once they were on the stage it was magic. I give them a 10. Carrie Ann said their dance took her out of her funk. It was incredible and his lines were beautiful Len said the Cameron and the Pasa Doble were made for each other Bruno said, Superman is back. The scores: Carrie Ann – 9; Len – 9; Bruno – 9 Total score 27/30 Marie and Jonathan followed with the Viennese Waltz danced to “I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You” and they nailed it. Marie is such a joy to watch. She puts her all into these dances and even when she makes a mistake I can’t take my eyes off of her. I was never a Marie Osmond fan so my fondness for her now has come strictly from her performances on DWTS. I would give her a 9. Len said Marie puts ‘feel good’ into everything and it was great. Bruno said it was like the lovely sleeping beauty but the beauty was still asleep because there was not enough character (of course both me and the audience booooooooooooooed him. Carrie Ann liked the tenderness and thought it was good .. but she overworked the hair a little. The scores: Carrie Ann – 9; Len – 9; Bruno – 8 Total score 26/30 Last week’s surprise performer, Jenny was in top shape again tonight. She and her partner, Derek danced the Pasa Doble. After we got to see a day in the life of Jenny Garth, she and Derek hit the dance floor and for me anyway, it looked like last week’s tango and renamed the Pasa Doble. I did love her dress though. Since I enjoyed watching and she entertained me I’d give them a 9. Bruno compared her to Nichole Kidman (I don’t get the comparison) Said she was getting better and the choreography was superb. Carrie Ann said Jenny dug deep but there was a lift. Len said once again this was a lift free zone night for him and it was fantastic. The scores: Carrie Ann – 8; Len – 10; Bruno – 9 Total score 27/30 The final dancers of the evening were Helio and Julianne. After a bit of a spat about who was in control during rehearsal they settled down and got to the business of dancing the Viennese Waltz. It was elegant and beautiful and a joy to watch. I gave them a 10 Carrie Ann she appreciated the fact Julianne kept her toes on the ground. She said when they dance it makes her happy to be alive. It was very special Len said that last week Helio’s engine had stalled but he revvvvvvved it up tonight. They did a good job. Bruno said they complimented each other and the audience loved them The scores: Carrie Ann – 9; Len – 9; Bruno – 9 Total score 27/30 The evening ended with Sabrina in the top spot with a score of 30 Tied for second place with scores of 27 are Helio, Jennie and Cameron In third with 26 points another 3 way tie between Marie, Mel and Jane. Floyd was 4th place with 23 and Mark ended up in last place with a 22. It is my hope that Floyd leaves this week and Mark is able to hang on for one more week. Tune in tomorrow night for the results show and see who has danced their last dance. Next week should be very good since the dances will both be Latin … the Samba and the Rumba. |
