Hey guys...For some reason I can't post a new ART Talk thread for tonight's show. If you can and get this, please open a new thread for us to talk about tonight's final three pairs. Remember to label it with the ART Talk heading. Thanks a bunch.

I thought the show was wonderful. I have to say though I was a bit let down by Laila and Maks. * Funnygirl dodges tomatoes from Maks' lovers everywhere They were a little outdone by both Apollo and Joey. I gave all my votes to Apollo. :D

They will have one more tomorrow for the judges, and I would bet that they are all doing ballroom. ;)

Well, I have to say that I wasn't disappointed by Laila ripping Maks shirt off. ;)
But I have to agree with the dances. Apo ruled the dance floor last night. We'll just have to wait and see what happens tonight.

I'm excited to see KeMo, Emmitt and Drew back. I hope they are going to dance.

And here comes Chairo disagreeing with everyone else .... surprise surprise. I thought Maks and Laila's first dance was awesome. I think she is right in that we expect her to be as good as the pros but she isn't and she is a big girl who can't do some of the things the other women do. I read this week, can't remember where, that she is at a disavantage because the professional women can distract viewers when their male partner makes a mistake, but Maks can't do that for Laila ... unless of course he takes off his shirt.

I believe all 3 are awesome dancers and it would be hard for me to choose. I thought Laila's second dance was good, but do think the judges were right in that a dance of elegance would have suited her more, but she was right when she mentioned they asked for something different from everyone.

Apolo and Joey were both great in their own way ... that is what I think we sometimes miss ... they all have a different personality and different styles. I agreed that Joey's first dance looked nothing like a cha cha.

However as for improving I think they all improved equally, but Laila, being a bigger woman unable to do some of the fancy stuff the guys can do, in my opinion, flourished in this competition and I will not be disappointed to see her win. PLEASE let a woman win.

I am really getting bored with the fact every year they bring in some guy who is awesome from the beginning and can out dance everyone. Mario was the best so far but he lost ... I think because Drew had it locked from day one and I don't think they judges wanted us to think it would always be that way ... but guess what, here we are again .. who didn't think Apolo would be in the final?

Guess to cap it off, I adore all three and will not be disappointed no matter who wins. For once we have a real competition, but I think the judges let us and all the viewers last night who they wanted to win. (The Simon syndrome)

I LOVED Joey's second dance, but I totally agreed with the judges about over-doing it on his first dance. The judge's choice was to show us how far they've come. i wish they would have had to perform a dance they did really poorly on again to see if they got it.

I bet the three dances tonight for the judges are all Ballroom as opposed to the Latins we saw last night. Looking forward to seeing some of our old faves from past seasons.

Hey DWTS friends, I won't be able to watch the show tonight so if any of you watch and want to do a mini-cap go for it. I'm so sorry but family has to come first. When I have more time I'll let you all know. Thanks again.

The finalist really tore up the dance floor for their final numbers. I really liked that Laila and Apolo chose dances they had not received high marks for in their first attempt previous attempt .. or was it Laila and Joey ... gee less than 24 hrs and I can't remember for sure. LOL

I was disappointed Laila went out in 3rd place though as they stood there I kept asking myself which of the two guys I'd rather see go and it would have been a coin toss. All three were really the leaders of the pack which became quite evident when their original competition all got up for one last dance. It was nice to see the group all back to gether but this time America and the judges got it right .. the final 3 were definitely the best of the group.

My biggest diappointment of the evening was the fact none of the previous winners danced. I was so looking forward to watching them again. It was sort of funny Emmitt saying people now associate him on the streets as the 'man who danced' and forget his stellar football career...However watching last years "flashbacks' I still think Mario was the winner.

I was very happy to hear Drew is continuing and will continue to travel with DWTS on their tour.

I will admit, though I seldom sit through these 'finals' I did this one and enjoyed the highlights of how DWTS started and great dances from the past 3 years.

I had one shock ... when Laila said (jokinly but serious) that she was 'pissed' she didn't win .. I didn't know they said that on TV but then it was live... or maybe I'm just not watching the right tv

Bottom line for me ... Apolo deserved to win ... but so did Joey and Laila. This was the best finals ever in that the right people made it to the end ... it was the worse in that there was no real clear cut winner ... but the best in that it kept the anticipation high...but worst because it would have been nice to see all of them win ... but the best because they really did love each other and though I am sure there was disappointment they were actually happy for Apolo.

Great year ... can't wait for the next ... but this will be a hard act to follow.

You summed it up wonderfully chairo. Thank you from both me and lpatrick. It was Joey who got the 8s on his original paso doble and he did look a lot better last night.

I disagree about Laila deserving a "win" in last night's finale. I have enjoyed watching her throughout this season, but quite frankly she was having a hard time keeping up with the boys.

I voted for Apolo, but Iwould have been just as happy if Joey won because he was VERY entertaniing this season. The good news is next season's competitors have got to be FIERCE!

Thanks Funnygirl .. did my best with all the distractions (Drew, Mario, etc lol) I am going to retract my claim that Laila should have won. She was by far the best of the female dancers and her progress was wonderful to watch, but being a huge fan of her Dad I transferred that I believe to Laila. I also so much wanted a woman to win this year.

I do believe in all honesty the right person won ... and I'd say the same if it had been Joey. I actually sat there last night hoping the two would tie.

I also agree they better find some pretty fantastic people next year .. this season set the bar very high

Hey guys...just a quick pop in to say hi and see what happened. I am really saddened that I didn't get to watch and report on the finale. I feel like I let everyone down.. But I will say a huge thank you to chairo and funnygirl for stepping up with great comments. A special thank you to chairo for doing a few recaps this season.

I have to say that it couldn't have been a better season. One of my favorite parts was when Kenny Mayne came back and did "Dance Center." I hope they'll do that again next season. As I am sad that Laila and Maks didn't win, I'm happy with the final three. Apo did a great job and was worthy of that horrid trophy.

You never let us down lpatrick we just missed your company and comments.

Speaking of which, I was reading TV Guide news and came acrossed this exciting article about last night's show. Pay close attention to the second paragraph:

Quote:

Backstage at Dancing with the Stars: Celebrating Birthday-boy Apolo's Emotional Win
by Deborah Starr Seibel

Dancing with the Stars champs Apolo Anton Ohno and Julianne Hough
There were odd pieces of silver metallic confetti stuck to the dull gray asphalt in the parking lot. The confetti, festive reminders, had been carried there by the shoes and clothing of those lucky enough to be part of Tuesday night's Dancing with the Stars finale. As it sparkled here and there in the darkness, you realized you had been part of an extraordinarily good night of television. A night when you truly felt that anything could happen. Could Laila Ali's stunning presence turn the tide and bring a woman back into the winner's circle? Would Joey Fatone's astonishing freestyle make voters forget that there was anyone else in the race? Or would Apolo Anton Ohno leave everyone in the dust with his boyish charm and ferocious competitive spirit?
Nothing was a done deal, nothing was finished — even during one commercial break, when the audience warm-up asked if anyone had a question for the judges. One woman politely asked why head judge Len Goodman had been so hard on Billy Ray Cyrus. The warm-up started to answer for Goodman, but Goodman wouldn't have it. "I'll answer that," he fired back. Then he barked an order: "Stand up, lady!" As the crowd gasped, Goodman continued, sounding outraged. "Do you honestly think that Billy Ray Cyrus is better than Paulina Porizkova? Better than Shandi [Finnessey]? Better than Leeza [Gibbons]?"

Then he got out of his chair and started walking toward her. It's no secret that Goodman rails against poor dancers staying in the hunt (remember Master P?) when there are more deserving contestants on the floor. But it was surprising — and very entertaining — to see him rail against an audience member. Luckily for her, the commercial break was ending, preventing him from going toe-to-toe.

And besides, adorable as he is, Billy Ray Cyrus is old news. It was time to crown the fourth-season champion. As Tom Bergeron called out their names — "Apolo and Julianne" — the place erupted. To many who have witnessed Ohno up close and personal, it made perfect sense. "Joey took a step," says Porizkova. "But Apolo made a leap."

"I think Apolo won because each week he got progressively better," says Finnessey. "He didn't start out as an amazing dancer, but he became an amazing dancer."

"For me, it was the connection between the two of them," says Finnessey's pro partner, Brian Fortuna, referring to Ohno and Hough. "They're focused, they're young, they're beautiful. They had everything going for them and they did everything they had to do to get where they wanted to be."

Hough looked dazed. But Ohno's face was pure joy. As he hugged his father and his godmother, Maria Kelly, she whispered in his ear. "I told him I was so proud of who he is, not just what he accomplishes," she says. "He proved to himself that he has some ability, that he can overcome some initial hesitation and fear. What's so wonderful about Apolo is that he won over the judges and the public. But he always felt that the experience was the win. That's what he told us last night."

And as if winning weren't enough, it all happened on Ohno's 25th birthday. "This is some present," says Yuki Ohno, his father. "We already started celebrating because he did very well last night. We were very satisfied with his performance because he did better on the paso doble."

Ohno himself sounded like what he is, an Olympic champion. "I hope I was able to set some sort of example," he says. "When you put your mind toward something, and have dedication, anything is possible. To win was icing on the cake."

Judge Carrie Ann Inaba thinks it might have gone another way if Fatone had pushed himself harder in the early weeks of competition. "In this competition," she says, "the audience is really smart. They know when you're really putting it out there, or you're resting. I think Joey saved it for the end. He could give master classes on how to entertain a crowd. And if he had really pushed himself he could've gotten even better by the end."

Fatone's daughter, 6-year-old Brianna, got special treatment tonight, thanks to the spectacular wardrobe department. They whipped up a tiny Star Wars outfit for her, to match what her father and his pro partner, Kym Johnson, were wearing. She could hardly stay in her seat, watching her father dance. "People watching us dance tell us we put a smile on their face," says Joey, resigned to coming in second and looking forward to the Dancing national tour starting late June. "That tells me that we did our job. We would've loved to win. But to hear people say, ‘Hey, I loved your performances. We were highly entertained.' I'm fine with that."

"And his dancing is completely different now," says his partner, Kym Johnson. "Oh, yeah," says Fatone. "Tonight, I could feel it. I was more leading her than she was leading me in the Star Wars tango." Fatone has also become a leaner, meaner dancing machine. He's dropped about 30 pounds. "I have more stamina and I can rehearse longer hours," he says.

As for Ali, she'll never be OK with coming in third. But that's just the nature of a competitive athlete. However, she can soothe herself with getting many props from the judges. "I loved it when Len [Goodman] said that he was a fan of my dancing," says Ali. "Because it's one thing to just judge someone. But to be a fan is when you actually want to watch them and enjoy watching them. That's what it's really all about."

"I'm going back home to get my life back," says her pro partner, Maksim Chmerkovskiy. "I've got studios to run, kids to teach, and championships to be won with straight-up judging according to your dancing. I definitely need a little bit of time off." Maks has always worn his heart on his sleeve. "I'm a little upset that we came so far... but didn't go all the way. I was hoping that this was going to be a season that changes the perception that only men can win. I did all I could."

But when he does go home, he can expect to have a little ache inside. Dance pro Jonathan Roberts, partnered with Heather Mills, says that's what happens when you finish up a marathon like this. "It was such an empty feeling for us when it was over," says Mills, who returned home to London after getting voted out. "Jonathan said, ‘Be prepared. You're gonna go home and you're gonna feel this emptiness.' And I thought, ‘How? I'll be too busy. I've got loads to do, studying for my degree, got my exams in July (Mills is getting a degree in nutrition).' But I really missed Jonathan. I've never had a routine in my life."

"We were on the show for two months, and we saw each other every day," says Roberts. "Every day coming in at 10 in the morning, working, then breakfast, more working, have a break. There's this set goal, and every week there's this prize you fight for. And you perform and get this high and this low. And then it ends and all of a sudden, it's empty."

But while it was happening, it was splendid. Kind of like finding unexpected confetti in the parking lot.

jcd77 thank you, thank you for inadvertantly following up on a 90210 thing for me!!

People either loved or hated Ian based on his character on 90210. I (unfortunately) was not a follower of the show. It was during my wild years and I just didn't have the time to invest...

Quite frankly. I think had he appeared on Season 1 or 2 he could have taken it all or even in Season 3 given Mario a run for his money!!

Thank you again for your insight. We hope to hear more from you!! :yay:
