Okay, folks, I’ll see what I can do to boil down an hour long results show in what is really important. One caveat, though – I’m fast forwarding through J. Lo’s performance. I mean it – I just can’t handle that girl! The show starts with showing the audience, which includes Eva Longoria and Sharon Osbourne. Wow – pretty heavy star power for this far ahead of the finals! Must’ve been a slow night in Hollywood! The next sight I’m accosted with is Paula Abdul’s chartreuse metallic dress. Now, I’m a Paula fan, but this is a little much. It has some sort of camouflage-esque print on it and I’m just plain scared. Interestingly, Simon admits to complimenting Sanjaya the night before, not allowing Ryan to call it a “compli-dis.” First up to pad the show: all eight contestants sing a song together – Bailamos. The song’s okay, but I’m upset by the fact that Sanjaya is still sporting the facial hair. Ick. After the break, Ryan steps out into the crowd and introduces the winners of last week’s AI challenge, then gives the next question, which is about a finalist from last season that performed with Meatloaf. Next up, Ryan is on the streets to talk to the people. People seemed to like Jennifer Lopez, one guy liked the girl running around in the skimpy clothes, then Ryan asked two girls holding Blake signs how Melinda did last night. Um, okay … Sanjaya got good reviews, and another guy liked the big girl wearing all red last night. Girls think Blake and Chris are cute, and Ryan obnoxiously offers to kiss an older woman who’s trying to run away from him. The first guest of the night is Akon, who sings, “Don’t Matter.” I like the song all right, but I’m distracted by his bouncing back and forth. What I do like is the guy that performs with him (sorry, but I guess I’m not hip enough to understand this guy’s job in the whole thing) has like a pouf of hair sticking up from the front of his head and the rest is shaved bald. Sanjaya should take note. After a freaky Ford commercial that has the finalists morphing into one another (wow, the Sanjaya to Melinda morph was like too easy – creepy!), Ryan reminds us (like we could’ve forgotten) about Idol Gives Back and gives a big old plug to the corporate sponsors. We then get treated to seeing Simon Cowell hanging out with kids in Africa, who tell him that he needs to wear a bra. Love it. Ryan then tries to talk Simon into getting up on the stage and singing, depending on how much money they are able to raise. The next gag to take up our time is footage of Tony Bennett cut in with old footage of the judges slamming people during auditions. Not all that funny, but I do love Tony Bennett and he looks great. When the show comes back, Ryan finally talks about the reason for tonight’s show for the first time – to find out the results of the vote. With that, we see clips from the show that we’re probably having a hard time remembering, seeing as it was all of 24 hours ago. Seriously! I’m fast forwarding. I know that Ryan is going to say the exact same comments from the judges again before he gives us the results. Ryan talks to the finalists, starting with Melinda, and she says that she enjoys listening to what Simon has to say. Haley says that she isn’t offended, but she was hurt a little bit by Simon’s comments (he told her that she was smart to wear as little as possible) and that she would never wear anything that she didn’t feel was appropriate. Blake was called out for having a couple of “key words” written on his wrist for rehearsal, but he says that he washed it off before the show. Phil is next, and we’re finally getting somewhat closer to learning something. Phil says that he feels blessed to be there, then Ryan directs that the lights be dimmed so that we can hear some results. Seacrest runs through Phil’s comments and tells him that he’s in the final three. He takes it pretty well and heads to center stage. LaKisha is safe, which Ryan says is surprising, I’m guessing because she got panned by the judges last night. Jordin is safe, Sanjaya is told to sit back down, Melinda is safe, Haley is in the bottom three, Sanjaya is told to stand up then sit back down again, Blake is safe, and we’re left with Chris and Sanjaya. The results are in and Sanjaya is safe while Chris is in the bottom three, which elicits boos from the studio audience. When we come back, we see the bottom three again, and Ryan says that he will send one of them back to the sofa, and it’s Chris that is safe. Phil and Haley remain in the bottom. Then he leaves them hanging so that we can see more clips of Jennifer Loopez. We see a performance that Jennifer put on for the finalists, then the finalists talk about how wonderful she is. LaKisha actually calls her a homegirl from the block. Then she sings, and I fast forward. I’m just not a fan. In fact, I can’t help but comment on her ridiculous outfit – it looks like a peasant shirt style muumuu that has been shredded at the bottom. She wore it over black leggings and cinched the whole thing with a big belt. I don’t even know that those words even begin to explain it – it’s sheer craziness. And when I say sheer, I also mean that the hippie shirt/dress/whatever was way too sheer – isn’t Idol a family show? There are only a few minutes left, so I’m hoping that we’ll finally get to the point here. After the highest vote of the season, over 35 million votes, Phil is safe and Haley is going home. Of course, we’re treated to her little montage before it’s time for her to sing her final song, “Turn the Beat Around.” It always amazes me that these kids sing after being heartbroken, but she does a great job. |
