Someone is going home tonight – who’s it going to be? Did the Fanjayas save their boy for another week? We’ll find out … after we create as much suspense as possible.

First we see the clips from last night when the contestants sang the standards. Simon was upset that he doesn’t know how he can criticize Melinda, and the niceness flowed into Sanjaya’s critique as well, which Simon called fabulous. It seems that he’s either given up or he hopes that if America thinks he likes Sanjaya that they’ll stop voting for the boy. The love fest continued up until Phil’s performance which Paula liked but Simon panned. LaKisha rounded out the night with what Simon called a “sassy” performance. It was strong for me, but a little scary. I felt like she was going to stomp right through my television. Definitely power behind her voice, though!

After hearing how great Ford is, Ryan announces the start of the AI song contest. If your song wins, it will be performed by the winner at the finale. Now, back to the contestants, which have been divided into groups of three. First up is Blake, Chris, and Sanjaya. The next group is Haley, Gina, and Phil and the last group is Jordan, Melinda, and LaKisha. One of these groups will end up on top, one is the middle three, and one group will be in danger of going home. First we hear the big surprise that Jordan, Melinda, and LaKisha are safe. The next bit of good news is that Blake, Chris, and Sanjaya are safe as well as the middle three. That leaves us to learn the fate of Haley, Gina, and Phil, the bottom three.

Next up is the newest way that they’re stretching these shows out to 30 minutes while managing to keep viewers – a trivia contest. The answer is obvious, but it costs 99 cents to submit your answer via text message. There’s a new company that’s signed up for the AI corporate sponsor-fest, but I’ve already forgotten who it was. Okay, actually I just don’t want to give them yet another plug. Ryan then announces an email address that other companies can use to join the legion of corporations that the singers are pimped out to.

Tonight’s special guest singer was supposed to be Tony Bennett, but the legend sadly has come down for the flu. Still, though, Ryan puts in a plug for his duets album, then announces his replacement: Michael Buble. He’s smooth and charming as he sings “Call Me Irresponsible” – a great cap to standards week. The crowd goes wild. Okay, maybe not wild, but they definitely show their appreciation in a dignified manner suitable for standards. Before he goes, Michael asks if he’s wasting his votes by continuing to vote for Antonella Barbara. Ryan confesses to doing the same thing. Men – so predictable. Glad to hear that they appreciate her vocal stylings so much.

And now, back to the bottom three: Haley, Gina, and Phil. We learn now that Phil is safe and will be returning to sing another week. That leaves us with Haley and Gina, two pretty girls that are pretty scared. Randy’s only a little surprised to see them in the bottom two, Paula isn’t certain if they belong there but admit that it’s getting tough at this stage, and Simon says matter-of-factly that he isn’t surprised.

Next, Ryan recaps the comments from last night for Gina, who chose a ballad:
Randy – nice and controlled
Paula – loved that you were understated
Simon – didn’t rave

And for Haley, who went up-tempo:
Randy – a good week for you
Paula – you did your thing
Simon – liked the song and your legs

In the highest vote of this season, just under 33 million votes, Haley is staying for another week and Gina is going home. There are tears all around as Haley returns to the rest of the cast and Gina’s clip reel is played. She auditioned three times, made it to Hollywood twice, and has now at least made the tour. Gina takes the stage a final time with her lucky pickle, but first she thanks her fans for helping her to make it this far and tells them that she’s glad that she’ll get to see them on tour. Her final song, “Smile” is sadly appropriate. Seriously, it gives me goose bumps. It’s a moment.
