What are we to say? Another ho-hum night with nothing to cheer about. Blake starts with 'Mack the Knife' and Tony Bennett has to explain the meaning of the song to him. It's always comforting to know these people have no earthly clue about classic music and it's painfully obvious they must be drawing tunes out of a hat to be "selecting" songs they don't know the meaning of. So, the song is about a mob guy and Blake sings it as though it's a love ballad with his wispy, small and very range-limited voice. No grit, no big voice, no big notes- ugh. Phil does 'Night and Day' and it was very painful to watch because I had several Cole Porter tunes played at my wedding. Not that Phil did a terrible job with it, it was missing everything Tony Bennett advised him on, like rhythm and a distinct movement of the tune. Melinda again is almost flawless as she glides through 'I Got Rhythm.' Clearly the class of the field, at this point I would advise her to upgrade into a first class agent and, sigh, look for a writer to team with since very few of today's singers haven't a clue how to write, play instruments or do anything other than perform. Chris Richardson actually sang a song without an overabundance of unnecessary runs, tune changing and questionable inflections. And guess what, it finally was passable! His interpretation of 'Don't Get Around Much Anymore' was far more convincing than Blake's 'Mack the Knife.' Jordin Sparks has an issue? Not anything she can control and it's not her fault, it is simply her age. She cannot help everything about her says she's about 24 except her voice. The low notes, the pitch at times are both a manifestation of her age and voice maturity, nothing more. She is exceptionally talented with a personality and attitude to match and she will be a huge star. 'On a Clear Day' was sung to the note as it should be, right off the sheet music. Gina's version of 'Smile' was her most restrained vocal yet, but very close to the Pretenders tune she did a couple weeks ago. Good, but not great- the vocal stylings selected by the producers are not on this show and do not fit her character or stage presence. Make no mistake, she is a rock and roll singer and is completely out of her element on this show- she should have done "Rock Star" on either season and fared much better. Sanjaya was........... well, the usual horrible vocal, the goof, the court jester, the kid Mommy tells you not to stare at. The thing is, I'm not sure he realizes what a joke he has become. All we hear week to week is, "I want to show America I can sing." Please, should you not have thought about that a couple months ago? Haley, if she wasn't as beautiful as she is, would have been gone weeks ago. But, when I'm watching her perform, I tend to be more forgiving of the vocal miscues simply because she is gorgeous. I don't think there has been anyone on this show nearly as attractive as her and it's keeping her around every week. Unfortunately, her looks may not get her into the biz...well, I take that back. With all the electronically gimmickry that makes Brittany, Jessica Simpson, Shakira and many others somewhat vocally capable I suppose Haley could join those ranks. LaKisha decides to blow off Tony Bennett's suggestion not to add the Bill Withers 'Ain't No Sunshine' line on the end of the song. He tells her to just stick the big note at the end, but she, like most of the other competitors, simply take Mr. Tony Bennett's suggestions and toss them out the window, as if to say, "I know better than you what will work." That one add-on at the end of the song ruined it entirely for me. Week after week, Gwen Stefani, Tony Bennett, Diana Ross, Lulu, Peter Noone, continue to advise these kids to just sing the song. Stop with the runs, adding words, lines, notes, etc. Just sing the freakin' song as it was written! But no, these snot-nosed brats are clearly the poster children of today's society who basically tell the rest of us, "Screw you, I'm doing it the way I want," while showing little respect, a lot of disdain and caring absolutely nothing about the person standing next to them, unless that person has something to hand out. "Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it." I'd be willing to bet a lot of money 8 of 9 (if not all) of the remaining competitors have no clue who is credited with that famous quote. Oh well, as it says... My guess- Bottom 3: Haley, Gina, Phil Gone: Gina |

I thought all of the performances were pretty good tonight. Yes, including Sanjaya. Can somebody settle an argument for me? Didn't Sanjaya sing "Steppin' Out" during the Top 24? I had to edit this post to add a comment to Anybodyhome's post: The "mentors" that appear on this show to help the performers are here to opine and suggest. The kids can choose to listen and follow their advise and get reemed by the judges for not staying true to themselves or they can go with their initial gut instinct and see how it flies (and get reemed by the judges for taking a chance and failing). These songs are all mini "remakes" in a sense. Trying to stay away from "karaoke" comments from Simon, "pitchy" comments from a tone deaf Randy or any words other than "you look nice tonight" from a useless Paula is a very interesting obstacle course to stay on.

Those who can't laugh at themselves, leave the job to others. Live your life in such a way that when your feet hit the floor in the morning, Satan shudders & says... 'Oh, crap...she's awake!!’ | |
