Tonight is the live finale where we will finally learn who the new apprentice will be: Sean or Lee. Will Lee be able to come back after last week’s disasters? Is Andrea okay? Is Sean’s event really going as well as it previously appeared? Will this season ever be over? We’ll find out the answers to all of these questions tonight! After much fanfare, The Donald, Carolyn, and George entered the “boardroom” with the live studio audience. Trump announces that the reason the finale is in Los Angeles this season is because the next season of The Apprentice, which starts in January, will take place in Hollywood. Trump goes on to praise the current season and the two finalists, Sean and Lee. Next, a little montage of the guys: Sean, 2-0 as PM is super enthusiastic and ready to go. Lee, 3-1 as PM speaks of his intelligence and loyalty. Sean is charming, especially adept at wooing ladies. He’s confidant. He has a great smile. Lee, unlike Sean, had a hard time in the beginning, losing in his first time as Project Manager. He came back, though, and Lenny sure as heck loves him. In the Ellis Island task, Lee managed to end a Gold Rush losing streak. At that point in the “interview”, Sean joined Lee on Gold Rush and they proved to be unstoppable as a team. Now, though, they’re on opposite sides again for the ultimate reward. Sean is organizing a Barenaked Ladies concert while Lee is managing a celebrity hockey game. Their teams are made up of former competitors: with Sean is Andrea, Tarek and Tammy and with Lee is Lenny, Roxanne, and Pepe. Yes, Pepe – one of those guys that left so early, you may not have remembered that he existed except for his unique name. To catch us up from last week, Lee is under the gun of the executive in charge of the charity his event will benefit. She wants Lee to take him on a walk-through to show her just where he is and how the event is shaping up and if she ends up pulling out, Lee can say goodbye to Trump. Sean had troubles of his own when Andrea started coughing up blood and had to leave his task to go to the doctor. That brings us to tonight’s main event, the hiring of the next apprentice. Okay, we’re actually still over an hour away from the actual hiring, but at least we’re back with the live audience again. Trump does an informal poll of the audience and Sean seems to be the favorite, despite some support for Lee from some guys that bear a creepy resemblance to their favorite politician. Trump claims that he hasn’t made up his mind yet. Back at the concert, Sean is moving along with a new plan that doesn’t include help from Andrea. Andrea, meanwhile, is at the doctor’s office finding out that she’s completely fine. Andrea returns to the Taj Mahal where she tells Sean that she had burst a blood vessel in her sinuses – okay, they only showed the doctor telling her that the mucous lining in her throat was irritated, but whatever. Andrea says that she’s ready to get back to work. At Chelsea Piers, the rep from the charity has arrived and is grilling Lee and his team. The exec, Lys, is definitely concerned about Lee’s ability both in running the event and as a leader as general. Lee has delegated the task of meeting the celebrity players to Lenny, which Lys thinks is an especially poor choice. Sean has a bit of a snafu himself when he suggests to the Pontiac exec that part of the presentation of the cars involve a guy in a panda suit because the panda is a symbol of the charity the event will benefit. The Pontiac exec is definitely not impressed by the idea and Sean holds onto it for maybe a minute too long, but lets it go and promises that there will be no panda guys near the cars. Next at the Taj Mahal, Barenaked Ladies arrives and is greeted by Sean. Tarek, meantime, is working with the exec from SLS, a speaker company. He’s critical of Sean because Tarek has been given so much autonomy. George agrees that Sean should be keeping a closer eye on his team and their work. At Chelsea Piers, game day has arrived and Lee feels good about being ready to go, describing his team as a well-oiled machine. Pepe is in charge of signage, Roxanne is in charge of the auction, and Lenny is in charge of meeting with the players. Lee is meeting with one of the execs to give her a play-by-play of the event. He at least has something on paper at this point, but hasn’t thought of everything. Lenny is at the meeting also cracking sarcastic jokes to the great frustration of Christine, the exec. As they continue to go through the plans for the event, it becomes more and more clear that Lee isn’t ready for things to start. Roxanne describes the meeting as embarrassing. The event must go on, however, and Lenny and Pepe work on handing out the equipment and uniforms to the players. They don’t have a list of sizes, so they guess, giving most people mediums. This is based mostly on who Lenny considers to have a small head. One of the best lines that came out of Lenny’s mouth was in describing a goalie: “extra, extra large jersey, but very small head. Give him a medium helmet.” At one point, Pepe is concerned that they haven’t given everyone the same amount of items, but Lenny tells him to “stop smoking Cuban crack.” Sean, meanwhile, is having some problems as well because the team has misplaced the music that must be played at the VIP event. After some scrambling, Tammy arrives to the rescue and is able to immediately find the disk. Sean says that besides being the most beautiful woman in the world, Tammy is also his lucky charm. Lee, however, doesn’t have to rely on small manufactured drama like a misplaced CD. At Chelsea Piers, Jason Priestley arrives and is greeted by a woman who doesn’t know his name and is then left to wander alone without anyone from Lee’s team greeting or directing him. Lucky for Lee, an exec is there to see this happen and she dispatches Lee to deal with the situation. Lee finds out that Lenny has not been answering his phone and Lee has to get a Chelsea Piers employee to take the players to Lenny. Jaime Pressley arrives and Lee tells her that one of her jobs will be to emcee the car auction, but that he will have everything typed out for her. Lenny then takes Jaime into the locker room where he tells her the naked men are. She meets the players, and then Lenny just leaves her to wander around wondering where she should go. Carolyn is definitely confused as to why Lee would choose Lenny or Pepe to work for him. I’m wondering if I really need to watch the rest of this show to see where this is going. On second thought, what could be more fun than seeing someone crash and burn? The tasks are in full swing at this point and Trump calls Lee and reminds Lee to make sure that the event starts on time because The Donald has other places to be, man. Trump arrives but Lee is nowhere to be found. You idiot, Lee! Trump even told you how far away he was when he called. Lee catches up with Trump just in time to show Trump to his seat and make a rather unprofessional introduction to the man sitting next to Trump. Lee then goes out on the ice where he gets the event started. The players are introduced and the game begins. At the Taj Mahal, the Pontiac exec points out to George that none of the signage identifies Pontiac. As the event starts, Andrea greets the VIPs by telling them about the car auction and describing the car. Sean, meanwhile, is getting gel for his hair. At the hockey game, their auction is starting and Jaime Pressley is certainly not impressed with the directions she’s getting. She tells Lenny, “You need to get your sh** together, little Apprentice boy.” The auction starts, and finally Lee gets a smile of approval from an exec. She’s pleased with Lee finally, but not nearly as pleased as Lee feels. Trump leaves to see how Sean is going. The concert is finally beginning at the Taj Mahal, and Sean gets the call that Trump is on his way. Donald tells Sean that Lee is doing a pretty good job and that he hopes to see some good work from Sean. Tarek starts the car auction there, which also includes the opportunity for the winners of the cars to sit with Donald Trump in the VIP section during the concert. Trump arrives and is greeted promptly by Sean, but there is a problem that’s been brewing: the Pontiac exec brings his concerns about the lack of Pontiac signage to Andrea. Obviously it’s too late to do anything about it, but they certainly haven’t pleased everyone. The auction starts with members of the band serving as auctioneers and things seem to be going well. In a brilliant publicity move, Trump drives the Pontiac from the auction to the stage where the concert will take place. In defense of Sean, there is Pontiac signage in the concert venue. Things are wrapping up now and as Lee’s team leaves him, he thanks them for a job well done. Lee leaves his task confidant that he put together a win and thankful that he had a team that was so solidly behind him. In possibly tonight’s best moment, George dances to Barenaked Ladies before the concert ends. Sean is also very thankful to his team and expresses his heartfelt appreciation. As he kisses Tammy on the cheek, I wonder … could we have another reality tv finale proposal tonight? Hmmm ….. Here we are, live at the boardroom with Trump, Carolyn, George, Sean, Lee and all of the previously fired candidates. Okay, it’s not quite time – we have to see Sean and Lee pack first. Sean feels that Lee is too young; Lee feels that his youth is an asset. Sean knows that Trump will appreciate his passion. Lee feels that Sean hasn’t done enough in his 33 years. Finally, Sean and Lee carry their suitcases past Robin’s “desk” to the “boardroom” where Trump’s first question is about how the finalists chose their respective teams. Sean focused on utilizing a mix of strengths and choosing people that would work well together. Trump points out that Lee chose a risky team and asks why. Lee says that he chose people based on how passionate they are for him to win the apprenticeship. Carolyn questions this, pointing out that Pepe only knew Lee a very short time. Trump moves on to asking Sean why he is better for the job than Lee is and Sean points right at Lee’s age. Lee is only 22, straight out of school, while Sean has experience working internationally. Lee doesn’t see the problem, saying that he’s at the same point in his career as Sean is because they’re both in the same place right now. Lee doesn’t see the importance of experience, which George of course sees as a problem. Sean takes this opportunity to tell Trump that he is able to start the job “on the ground running” tomorrow. Trump tells the two that he’ll see them next at the live finale, where Trump will make his decision. Before we see who’s hired, though, Trump takes some time to introduce his children Donald and Ivanka. He asks his kids who he should hire, but both kids decline to choose one over the other, deferring to their father. Randall, the last apprentice and inventor of the word “apprentii” is also in the audience and he takes the opportunity to promote himself and his website. Finally, the finalists are brought to the stage. Before Trump starts talking to Sean and Lee, he talks to the previously fired candidates. Tarek has the utmost respect for Sean and thinks that Trump should hire him. Tammy is asked if she thinks that Sean hurt himself by expressing his love for her so constantly. Tammy answers well by saying that Sean’s effusiveness demonstrates his passion and that it would be an asset for Trump’s organization. Pepe is given some love with Trump saying that he really did remember him. Lenny says that Lee is like gold, which doesn’t have an age, and dodges Trump’s question of why Lee used Lenny as a crutch. Trump isn’t impressed. Charmaine compliments both candidates but says that she believes that Sean is a better choice. Next, Trump introduces the two jobs that are possibilities for the new apprentice. The first is a hotel project in Hawaii and the other is a hotel project in Soho. I fast forward through the commercials for the new hotels. Sean says that in order to learn as much as possible from Trump, he has to be in New York. Lee chooses New York as well, saying that as a native New Yorker, he knows the city inside and out. Back to the other candidates, Trump asks them to stand up in support of which finalist they support. The “votes” are divided pretty equally. George declines to choose one or the other. It’s lucky that we have Carolyn, who is woman enough to speak up and after complimenting Lee, she calls Sean a true leader. Lee makes his case, saying that he’s stepped up more as Project Manager than any other candidate in any season. Sean says that he has the attitude and the aptitude to run the Soho project or any other project around the world. Trump asks Sean if he’s going to marry Tammy and he says that he is. We learn that the vote from the viewers was pretty one-sided, which Trump says surprised him. Trump says that he agrees with the vote, but that it’s a difficult choice for him. The next words out of Trump’s mouth are a surprise to no one, “Lee, you’re fired. Sean, you’re hired.” Sean also gets one of the new Pontiacs, but he doesn’t get down on one knee. Pity, that would’ve been much more exciting since it’s been clear for some time now that Sean was going to win! So, that’s all for this season. The next cycle will take place in LA and will being airing in January. The show ends with Sean driving away in his new car honking his horn and yelling out to all of New York, “I’m the Apprentice, baby!” |
