Well, I tried to watch part of the premiere last night in commercials of Lost, and I really think this is one of the stupidest ideas for a show ever.

Yep. You know the network thinks so too since the season premiere lasted 30 whole minutes. I want those 30 min. back!!!

I love how half of the time they were just complaining about how miserable the place was. Talk about stupid

I personally thought it was mediocre at best... and although I didn't really mind the twist (with the reading of secrets and stuff), I think that the game is pretty darned impossible to win. Not to mention, how could you be so stupid as to sign up for a show like this? Surely they knew to some degree that their secrets were going to be out in the open... then again, I suppose that people will do just about anything to be on TV...

I didn't watch at all so I need a mini recap Bored. It was only a 30 minute premiere??? I was too busy being "Lost." So these people have "secrets" revealed? And the jist of the show is that you can only win if everyone votes for you and as time passes the prize money decreases??? Sound about right? Is there an elimination process?

So I'm the only fan? :) It's the closest thing to Big Brother this time of year. I wish the shows were a full hour.

Lemme see if I can recap: The underground bunker is pretty cool-looking. Very isolated though: no windows or clocks. The powers-that-be control the temperature. A futuristic-sounding female voice tells the contestants when to eat, when to sleep, etc.

The host, J.D. Roth, appears only on a monitor. He gives them instructions, but they don't communicate with him. He ain't no Julie Chen. There are 9 contestants: 4 women, 5 men. They are competing for 1.5 million dollars. Ballots are cast privately. They can not vote for themselves. 8 people have to agree unanimously to award the money to person #9. If the vote is not unanimous, the prize money begins to decrease until the next vote.

Each week, someone must be eliminated from the game, but they don't get to leave the bunker. This is accomplished by bringing out 9 sealed envelopes. Each envelope contains a secret about one of the contestants that they'd rather not reveal. They choose 3 of the envelopes at random and read the secrets. But there are no names attached to the secrets. They discuss and then vote on which secret is the worst. (This ballot does not need to be unanimous.) Whoever belongs to the secret which is deemed to be the worst is now out of the game, and is no longer eligible for the money. But they remain in the bunker, and they still have to participate in the voting.

If anyone chooses to exit the bunker, the prize money is cut in half.

They did the first money vote and I think it went like this:
Steve - 4
Jamie - 2
Vanessa - 2
Jonathan - 1
But I might be wrong. I'm old and feeble-minded.

They opened 3 envelopes and the secrets were:
1 - one contestant spent time in a mental institution (Richard)
2 - one contestant had an arrest for carrying live ammo (Tarah)
3 - one declared bankruptcy even though they were worth 100 Grand (Kelly)
We learned the identities via confessionals. The contestants don't know whose secret is whose. When the show ended they were still discussing which one was worse.

This show has great potential for all the good stuff: lying, cheating, backstabbing, snarkiness. Jonathan got a jump on the lying by telling everyone he has testicular cancer and his Dad has gone deeply into debt to pay for his operation. This may actually surpass the Johnny Fairplay "dead grandma" story.

And the most hated contestant is already evident: Kelly the minister. She wasted no time in informing gay housemate Jameson that he's doomed to burn in hell for all eternity. She also announced that money is the root of all evil. And you're in this game why exactly?

So what keeps the person who has the "worst secret" staying in the bunker? If I didn't have a chance at the money, you can bet I'd want to get out of that hellhole and cut the rest of the contestants money in half.

Thanks for the info Qboots!!! That was a great recap and it sounds more interesting than I thought.

I'm with you dflem. I wouldn't stick around if I had no chance at the money and wouldn't care if the money was cut in half. Outta there.

That's the beauty of the show. You get enough people who want the hell out of there it becomes two-fold...you need them to stay AND vote for you.

Q-EEEE!!! :laugh You had me rolling. I forgot you're in mid-detox from Big Brother. Bad networks...BAD, BAD!!! It's like dangling Mc'Donalds french fries in front of a dieter! :laugh

Yeah, the show went by so quickly I didn't really grasp all of it. (That, and the fact that I have the attention span of a gnat.)

You would certainly have a lot of people begging you not to go. I'm not sure if there's a rule in place that forbids making a deal to share the prize. I would imagine so, it's pretty standard these days. Otherwise they probably would have agreed to make the first vote unanimous and just split the 1.5 million 9 ways. So I don't know what the survivng contestants could do to convince the evictee to stay.

The only reasons I could see myself staying would be if I had bonded with someone and wanted to stay and campaign on their behalf. Or conversly, if I hated someone enough I'd stay just to ensure they had no shot at the money. But only if I wasn't looking at a long period of time. I'm not sure what the maximum length of this series could turn out to be.

Thanks for the recap, Qboots! I missed the first one, but I'm going to have to check it out - I'm in serious BB withdrawal!
