Our show opens with the remaining designers dealing with the departure of Guadalupe. Marla says that it’s weird when the person who leaves is one of your roommates, but, I’m thinking that Marla should be thanking her lucky stars she is still around. I swear, that woman must be working on the eighth of her nine lives. If she lasts much longer, I will be almost as disgusted as I was when I saw the Weaver family make it to the Final Three of The Amazing Race. Moving on, Zulema notices that the group is getting smaller (Man, nothing gets past her, does it?), and she says, “I need to do what I need to do to stay in this competition.” So long as that doesn’t include showing us video footage of a secret rendezvous with Tim Gunn, I’m fine.

We hop over to the guys’ rooms, and Santino and his blimp-sized ego are still basking in the glow of his victory in the Nicky Hilton challenge. Santino, who reminds me of the Unabomber in his grey hooded sweatshirt, says, “My confidence has increased a lot with the win.” (Wait, you mean his confidence wasn’t already off the charts? Amazing…) Anyway, Santino continues, “Nicky Hilton couldn’t have said sweeter things to me.” What I wish Nicky had said to Santino was, “Wash your hair, shave your beard, and get some dental work,” but that’s just me. Daniel (who earns bonus points with me for not being afraid to call Santino “arrogant”) is probably in the best frame of mind and says, “It doesn’t matter how many (challenges) you win. You have to be on your game every time.” I tell you, Daniel is quickly rising in the ranks with me. I’m really starting to see him making it all the way to the Final Three.

It’s time for the group to meet Heidi at the runway to find out about their next challenge. A very pregnant Heidi walks out and informs the group that their next challenge will be to design a dress for Banana Republic. Heidi goes on to explain that the winning garment will be sold in select BR stores and online, and I start to shudder violently. I mean, it was the Banana Republic challenge last year that Wendy “Witchiepoo” Pepper won, and she vaulted into the Final Three. (God, please don’t let Marla win this and use it as a springboard into this season’s finale. I mean, I’d rather watch the entire season of The Apprentice: Martha Stewart again than see that happen.) Anyway, Heidi tells the group that their next destination is the BR offices and that they are to meet with Deborah Lloyd, BR’s head designer.

The group meets Deborah (and Heidi) at the BR offices, and Deborah explains that the designers are to create an outfit that will take “the Banana Republic woman” from daytime into evening. She says it should be sophisticated and classy during the day and that something should be done to it to make it “sexier, a little more fun” for evening. Finally, Deborah advises the designers, “Don’t lose your personalities, but remember…this is for the Banana Republic woman.”

The group leaves the BR offices and heads to Mood Designer Fabrics to purchase their materials for this week’s challenge. (Is there no other fabric store in all of New York City?) At this point, Zulema bemoans the fact that she and BR “are polar opposites”, and she wonders how in the world she’ll do well in this challenge. (Don’t worry, Zulema; as long as Marla is still around, there is at least one designer worse than you in the competition.)

Once the group is done at Mood, they head back to Parsons, where our man Tim informs them that he has a couple of “important announcements”. The first is that the group has until midnight that night to complete their designs. The second announcement is…*dramatic pause*…that the designers will be working in teams of two but will only design and produce one outfit! (*insert dramatic music here*) Then, as if that weren’t enough, Tim says they have 30 seconds to pair off and decide who is working with whom. Everyone is still in shock from learning that they’d be working in teams, so there’s this weird period where they all just sit around wide-eyed before they end up in the following pairs: Andrae/Daniel, Santino/Nick, Emmett/Chloe, Kara/Zulema, and Marla/Diana. Hmm…overall, they’re pretty good pairings. A/D and E/C should be drama-free. K/Z has potential for some good drama. S/N will almost undoubtedly result in a diva-fest of some sort. M/D…well, they’ll be boring as hell, but at least they are paired together and aren’t screwing up two other designers’ chances. Santino seems pretty confident about his chances in this challenge (Santino’s confident? Imagine that…) and says, “I’ve seen where BR is going, and I feel like I know their future.” Right, Santino. You’re sooo tuned into BR’s design philosophy. I can see BR selling your god-awful Sound of Music-meets-Frederick’s of Hollywood lingerie from last week any day now. Oh yeah, Tim says, there’s one more thing. The designers who work on the losing outfit will both be out of the competition and off the show! (Now, I wish that Santino had ended up with Marla for two reasons. First, it would have been hysterical (to me, anyway) to see Santino try to work with Marla. Secondly, I’d like to see both of these two gone sooner rather than later, and I would have loved to have seen Santino knocked down a peg or two by getting an early dismissal from the show. But, I digress…)

It’s later in the evening, and the teams are hard at work on their designs. Well, most of the teams are hard at work, anyway. Marla and Diana can’t seem to agree on what they want to do and are engaged in a fierce game of “What do you want to do?” “Oh, I don’t know. What do YOU want to do?” Diana, who seemed to be so confident about her design earlier, has morphed into the Queen of Indecisiveness and can’t make a decision to save her life. I swear, I just want to reach into my television, slap the hell out of both of them, and help them pack their bags.

It looks like several of the teams are using navy charmeuse for whatever reason, and this upsets Zulema to no end. She says, “If I see it one more time, I’m gonna puke. It’s so overused.” (Of course, Zulema seems to have forgotten that she is one of the people using navy charmeuse, but I’m not there to remind her of that fact.) She then turns her frustration towards her teammate Kara, and the two engage in a spat, resulting in Zulema storming out of the workroom.

Diana and Marla are still unsure about what direction they want to take (imagine that), and this is getting on Santino’s nerves. He says, “Diana is grasping at straws. She’s so ridiculous, and I can’t stand the sound of her voice!” (Oh, yeah, Santino…like you’re such a vision of loveliness yourself. You’re like the love child of a homeless guy and Lurch from The Addams Family, and looking at (and listening to) you is, oh, such a pleasure.) Within his own team, Santino and Nick seemed to have reached some sort of compromise on their design, and Nick says, “The fact that you won’t see 500 trims on it, you’ll know that I’ve tamed the beast.” Um, as far as I know, he’s still talking about working with Santino and not whatever goes on in the back room of Boy Bar, but I could be wrong…

Tim pays the group a visit to see how they’re progressing, and he really likes what he sees from the Daniel/Andrae and Emmett/Chloe teams. He then heads over to talk to Marla/Diana, and you can see the look of disdain on his face. Marla says she’s “relieved” when Tim suggests changes, and I think that she’s just relieved that she didn’t have to make a decision. Tim then visits with Kara/Zulema. He points to their design and says, “This is not working for me. You’re so off the mark. You are the last two I would ever expect to be out of this challenge.” Tim moves on, but the damage has been done. Zulema shifts into full-on dictator mode and take over her team’s entire project, while Kara wanders around aimlessly, bawling like a blubbering fool. Daniel tries to console her a bit, but it doesn’t seem to work, as the tears continue to flow.

It’s the next day (the day of the runway show), and everyone is back at Parsons getting ready. Tim comes in and announces that the designers and their models will have one hour for hair, makeup, and a final fitting, and then he announces, “We’re taking a field trip.” The group heads outside and down the street, and the eventually end up in front of a BR store where they meet Alessandra Brunialti from BR. Alessandra informs the designers that there is a “Phase Two” to this week’s challenge. In addition to creating the outfit, each team will have to create a window display that illustrates the day-into-evening concept of their design. The judges for this part of the challenge will be actual BR customers. The teams quickly get to work, and we start to see each team’s idea/theme start to take shape. Well, each team except Marla/Diana, that is. I am not surprised at all to see that they are once again at odds because they cannot agree on the plan for their window. They finally do agree on something, and this is how the themes are starting to pan out: A/D will feature 2 large clocks to represent day and evening. E/C will include 2 life-size drawings of their model and the garment. Z/K’s window will feature a skyline of New York City. D/M will feature an office desk covered in crumpled up pieces of paper. Finally, N/S will use their window to represent some sort of art gallery or something. (I say “or something” because I’m not sure what it is at this point. It just looks like a bunch of butcher paper to me.)

At one point, Marla tells Diana, “I was thinking our window looks stupid.” Marla, hon’, that is the first thing you’ve said this whole season that I can agree with. Apparently, I’m not the only one who feels this way, as the M/D window doesn’t seem to generate much interest when the votes start to come in. As the “judges” look at all the window and place their votes, Santino says, “I didn’t see one ballot that said ‘5’ on it. I don’t know how that’s possible, but whatever.” Hey, Santino, I can tell you how that’s possible. Your window display suh-hucked.

It’s time for the runway show, and we finally get our first up-close look at the teams’ designs. A/D’s design is first, and it’s a really cute white cropped jacket paired with a dark spaghetti-strap dress with a dropped waist. Z/K’s model is next, and, while the design isn’t bad, there’s something about it that just doesn’t seem quite right. M/D’s garment is next, and it is a dark suit with a pencil skirt featuring buttons which can open to reveal a slit on the skirt. It’s a rather boring outfit, IMO. E/C’s model is next, and she sports a black suit whose jacket can be reversed to show a bright silver fabric. Personally, I like the all-black look because wearing the silver jacket makes it look like the model’s upper torso is covered in a bag of Jiffy-Pop. Finally, we see S/N’s “Asian-inspired” suit, which looks like nothing more than a short bathrobe, if you ask me.

The designers are brought onto the runway, and all are kept there for the Q&A session. Deborah Lloyd tells D/A that they “really listened” to Deborah’s instructions. Nina tells D/A she “loves the versatility” of the outfit. And Michael proclaims that the outfit is “cute…very cute.” (During this whole time, Santino is rolling his eyes. I mean, how could anyone’s creation be better than his?) Deborah asks K/Z if there was a bit of “last-minuteness” to their design, and they acknowledge that there was. While the judges aren’t too sure about the design as an ensemble, Michael says, “The dress alone is a great dress.” Deborah tells D/M, “I had a bit of a hard time with this.” Michael is even less diplomatic and says, “I think she looks like a stewardess. I’m waiting for her to bring me a coffee or something.” Nina tells C/E, “I loved this outfit.” Michael adds, “I agree with Nina. The only thing is that it looks very Bergdorf’s and not very Banana Republic.” It’s finally time to talk to N/S, and Deborah says, “Tell me what you were thinking.” Santino goes into some diatribe about how the model is supposed to represent an art gallery owner and she’s going to her gallery during the day and zzzzzzzzzzz…Oh, sorry. I dozed off there for a second; Santino’s speech was that random and uninteresting. Michael chimes in and explains that many of his customers are the art gallery owner type, and he adds, “They would not walk into their galleries dressed like that.” Santino throws more than a bit of attitude in his response and says, “I know lots of women like this who know Banana Republic and don’t know Michael Kors.” Ouch! Santino just doesn’t know when to reel it in and shut up, does he? Anyway, Deborah says that the outfit is “beautifully styled, but not so believable for the BR customer.” Finally, Nina adds, “It needs to be edited yet again. I don’t really think this looks elegant. I’m sorry.” With that, Santino cuts Nina this look that makes me think the two of them are gonna duke it out sooner rather than later.

The designers leave the runway, and it’s time for the judges to have their little chat. They all give a thumbs-up to D/A’s design. Nina and Michael really like C/E’s garment, but Deborah thinks it’s “a little too esoteric”. Heidi says she really likes K/Z’s dress, but Deborah disagrees, saying that they “didn’t put the two pieces together well.” As for the D/M creation, everyone agrees, calling it “dull”, “boring”, and “flat”. Deborah complains that N/S “didn’t really listen” to their instructions. Michael says that Santino is “trying to prove how damn creative he can be.” Nina agrees, saying, “He’s trying too hard. It’s too much.” OK, so now I’m torn. On the one hand, I’d love nothing more than to see Santino sent packing, but I really like Nick and don’t want to see him go. On the other hand, I’m already over Marla and Diana, and I don’t think having them leave would have that much of a ripple effect on the other designers or the show. But, if they leave, that means Santino is around for at least another week.

The designers are brought back onto the runway, and it’s time for the decision. Before we find out who is sent home, Heidi announces that this week’s winners are…Marla and Diana! No, I’m kidding. I just wanted to see if you were paying attention. This week’s real winners are…Andrae and Daniel! I’m not surprised at all, as I really liked their outfit and thought they had a very effective window display. Andrae and Daniel leave the runway and are safe for at least another week. We then find out that Emmett/Chloe and Kara/Zulema are also in. That means that the team that will be sent home will be either Santino/Nick or Marla/Diana. God, can’t they find some way to send Santino, Marla, and Diana home? Unfortunately, they can’t, and Heidi announces that Santino and Nick are…in. That means that Diana and Marla are out. They don’t seem to be too surprised by the news, and they make their exit gracefully.

I have to say I’m not surprised by this week’s results, and I guess I can tolerate Santino for another week. Did the right team go home this week? In the end, I think the answer is yes. I just hope Santino goes before we get to the Final Three…
