Age: 29
Hometown: Johannesburg, South Africa
Education: Architecture Degree, South Africa

Kara Janx hails originally from South Africa. After completing a degree in architecture, she moved to New York City where she still resides. When she first arrived in New York she worked as an architect for four years. It was during that time when she began to feel herself drawn toward fashion, and now works exclusively as a professional fashion designer.

Kara’s classic cuts and unique accents have given her a reputation in boutiques across the country and internationally. Her collections embrace the urban girl, a lifestyle with which she has become accustomed to. She describes her work as "feminine with an urban slant". Her clothes are hip, colorful and functional, embracing not only the technique with which she skillfully does her work, but also the city in which she lives.

Kara translates her skills and techniques into her clothes, which have a concentration on various surface treatments. Most of the pieces are both hand-cut and hand-screened, lending to a very tactile finish. All graphics are hand drawn and pull inspiration from the clean lines and precision of architecture. Her line is represented in New York City and is currently selling nationwide and internationally. Janx’s collection has received great appreciation in the press including television and various fashion and lifestyle publications.

Q & A.

Q. How would you describe your design philosophy or point of view?
A. I design with the vitality of my generation, and the confidence of street.

Q. What would someone close to you describe as your best and worst traits?
A. Best: loyalty, passion, witty, compassionate. Worst: neurotic, pedantic...and, on the occasion, moody.

Q. What was your most embarrassing moment?
A. I was at a government building and I thought one of the employees had brought her daughter to work. I thought the "little girl" was so cute. I ended up picking her up and discovered that she was actually a small person. It was horribly embarrassing.

Q. What is an odd fact or talent you possess?
A. I did modern dance for 15 years, and I'm a great tennis player.

Q. Who are the designers you admire most?
A. Marc Jacobs, Helmut Lang, Nicolas Ghesquiere for Balenenciaga, Miuccia Prada, Vivienne Westwood, Proenza Schouler, Libertine, Betsy Johnson, Norma Kamali, Diane von Furstenburg, Phoebe Philo for Chloe, Alexander McQueen, Comme de Garcon...to name a few.

Q. What are your favorite fashion magazines?
A. Vogue, Elle, Lucky, Nylon, Visionaire, Surface, BlackBook, Vanity Fair, Fader, I-D, W..

Q. What are your favorite TV shows?
A. Seinfeld, The Simpsons, Iron Chef, Apprentice, Curb your Enthusiasm, Entourage and OF COURSE PROJECT RUNWAY.

Q. What are your favorite movies?
A. Requiem for a Dream, The Rocky Series, Ray, Finding Neverland, Old School, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (old and new), Cocktail, and Basquiat.

Q. If you could design an outfit for any living person, who would be your dream client and why?
A. There are many living legends I would be honored to clothe. This includes Madonna because of her amazing sensibility and ability to constantly transform herself; Beyonce for her confidence, beauty and attitude; Aerin Lauder, for her grace, heritage and presence; Cameron Diaz, for her spunk and sassiness; Drew Barrymore for her charm and dedication and perseverance.

Q. Who was your favorite designer from Season 1?
A. Austin Scarlett. I loved his outlandishness, his sensitivity and wonderful design sensibility.

I just watched this week's ep again and upon further review I like Kara's skating dress the best--it seems more functional and Emmet's did look too short. I still don't like Zulema's though
