![]() Age: 42 Hometown: New York, NY. Education: Parsons Emmett McCarthy was born sixth out of eight children in North Haven, Connecticut and now lives and works in New York City. Emmett’s artistic talents were recognized at age six by Alfred Tulk, who encouraged Emmett’s parents to educate him in drawing and painting. Emmett attended the Educational Center for the Arts, a talented and gifted high school for Visual and Performing Arts in New Haven, Connecticut. In New Haven, teacher, sculptor and artist Anna Broell Bresnick encouraged Emmett to nurture his ability to design clothing. Emmett studied fashion design and earned his B.F.A. at Parsons School of Design. In the 1980s, he met Antonio Lopez, fashion illustrator to the world’s elite designers. Mentored by Antonio before he died of AIDS in 1987, he was one of Emmett’s strongest influences. Emmett went on to work as a photo stylist and editor with photographer Maureen Goss and also collaborated with fashion illustrator Andrea Selby. After graduating from Parsons, Emmett moved to London and then Paris, working for designers in both cities and cultivating his taste for European style, color and silhouettes. After returning to New York City, he began designing men’s sport and dress shirts for Publix Group, Nautica and Wrangler. Emmett was then hired as Design Director of Sportswear Collections with designer Ron Chereskin and remained there for six years, creating fashion shows at CFDA’s Seventh on Sixth in Bryant Park and overseeing the design direction of licensees and advertising promotions. In addition to his extensive travels, Emmett is also influenced by literature. He attended New York University to study screen writing where he collaborated on a film script with Nicole Hughes, writer and founder of Plastic Sugar Press. He has also written two memoirs, “My Lips Were Sealed” and “Frankly Stated,” which both recount his experience growing up in a large family challenged with death, illness and his difficulty with coming out to his Irish Catholic family. Emmett has just opened a new boutique at 240 Elizabeth Street in Nolita, NY. |

Q & A. Q. How would you describe your design philosophy or point of view? A. I am defining my design philosophy for women's wear from my menswear background. The use of contrasts to create harmony and balance in design with color, texture and construction can be applied to everything including fashion. I love the use of men's tailoring fabric mixed with lace and velvet. Using feminine fabrics with masculine trims such as matte dress buttons and vice versa, somber men's fabrics with sparkling crystal buttons or satin trimming. I think as Americans we all dress in seperates and like to mix and match, I think it is important to have elements of unique design details to mix in with staples of denim and khakis. Q. What would someone close to you describe as your best and worst traits? A. My best trait: I listen to what others have to say. My worst trait: being sincere with insincere people Q. What was your most embarrassing moment? A. Got up in the middle of the movie in a theater to use the restroom and returned to the wrong seat, put my hand on the leg of who l thought was my friend and asked "what did I miss?" and scared Martha Stewart who jumped up and told me she was unhappy that l was interrupting her concentration! Q. What is an odd fact or talent you possess? A. I have had more than 1000 hair styles and colors in less than 20 years in the fashion industry. Q. Who are the designers you admire most? A. Liberace, he was the first one to introduce sparkle into men's couture. Q. What are your favorite fashion magazines? A. Fashion magazines for me are for work. People Magazine is how a select few are seen wearing fashion (with juicy stories). Q. What are your favorite TV shows? A. The last time I watched TV was in the 70's when the Brady Bunch and Partridge Family played back to back on Friday night. I was traumatized by the 70's fashions and never watched TV again. Q. What are your favorite movies? A. Grey Gardens: The first reality movie of Edith and Edie Beale. Q. If you could design an outfit for any living person, who would be your dream client and why? A. Betty Boop, she is an independant, sexy woman with personality and practicality. She has been wearing that dress for 75 years and I would love to help her with her wardrobe! Q. Who was your favorite designer from Season 1? A. Michael Kors, as his work is the only work I know, since I have not seen Project Runway Season 1. |

I really like this guy! I think he is a really genuine person, despite his not-so-appealing clothes. I am so glad Emmett made it through this week even though Santino sold him out. |
