Title: ART Talk - 9/13 Rock Star Supernova
Description: FINALE!

dfleminator - September 14, 2006 01:15 AM (GMT)
Let's chat about tonight's finale in this thread.

Who will win it, Magni, Toby, Dilana or Lukas?

dfleminator - September 14, 2006 01:18 AM (GMT)
So Lukas is the new frontman of Supernoblah.

I can't tell you how happy I am! Dilana gets second, and she gets all the help from Gilby and Dave, without actually having to be tied to their music. I was so excited to see that Supernova now has an awful singer to go with their awful songwriting.

I didn't even feel the need to watch the last 10 minutes... I felt so free!

lpatrick - September 14, 2006 01:37 AM (GMT)
I didn't get to watch or record. :O I was at my other gig and want you guys to come over to Dancing with the Stars now that this thing is over. I am truly happy for Dilana, Toby and Magni. If the "originals" that SN have been giving us is what they are about consider these three better off. I hate that because musically I love T Lee and Jason.

It was great fun to hear from you all this season. I also loved meeting all the new members that joined up during this show. Thanks for sticking around with us. It has been a true joy reading everyone's thoughts and opinions. ;) Much love.

I am kind of glad it's Lukas. I wanted to buy Toby, Magni and Ryan's stuff solo and I have everything intention to. I think I will buy their CD cause Lukas grew on me as the season went on and Tommy Lee is the god of the drums. But 2 seasons, 2 Canadian winners. With this trend maybe I will sign up next year and hope for a coincidence.

oh_yummm - September 14, 2006 05:22 AM (GMT)
First, just let me get this out of the way: I am Canadian.

I too, suspected Lukas would pull this off. I actually quite enjoy him although I have taken note that most at this site don't. I do agree that sometimes he is hard to understand but that could just be the Canuck accent :wacko

Dilana has never really impressed me. It was not her voice; she is quite tremendous and amazingly talented. I think it was more her attitude of anger that seemed to fill most every song she performed that turned me off. I remembering thinking one night that she could take "You Are My Sunshine" and make it sound like even that thought ticked her off. Just not sure about her.....

My vote would have been for Toby. He has a stage-charm that makes it impossible not to be swept away by his music. His range is immense and I love the way he always pulled the live audience into his performances. This man has a huge future on his hands and I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't hear big things from him very soon.

So Lukas wins. I suppose it could have been any of the three. In the end, I'm not sure it matters because I don't think this band will be together for a long time. But for now, I'm looking forward to hearing just what kind of music they can make together.

Haha Epheks - I was thinking the same thing. what a mirror image the final 3 were of both seasons......

3rd place: The ever so humble Aussie. (Difference with Toby and Mig is that Toby is sexy and single.)

2nd place: The American (OK, a female this time)

1st place: The Canook who used to sleep in his car and spoke his mind about what he thought of fellow contestants. The only difference here is that JD had a MAJOR fumble in the early rounds with a Queen song and is easy on the eye to look at, where as Lukas has a voice that you can't understand so if he fumbled it didn't show.

Well good luck to SN - they chose who the fans supposedly voted for. Now we need to see if the fans vote with their wallets and actually attend concerts. I am sure that most will be going to see the support acts. :laugh

Oh Yummm - welcome to ART.

I to think that Toby has a huge future. I read in the local paper yesterday (Sydney) that if he didn't win his band from here in Australia were flying over and they were entering the studio to record an album. His band must be stoked that he didn't win, because he returns to them and the future will be HUGE!!!

Tourism Australia also think he has done wonders!

oh_yummm - September 14, 2006 05:32 AM (GMT)
If that's the case, I'm sure his band is thrilled! And it is often the runners-up that make it so big. Look at Clay Aiken......

The young man that finished in third place in Canadian Idol a few years ago has taken his original band and gone HUGE here. The winner released a song, didn't do much. The second place finisher......well, I know it was a girl but can't remember much else.

Toby will only benefit from this.

Epheks - September 14, 2006 05:58 AM (GMT)
I think the difference between shows like Supernova and The Idol franchise is this has an older audience. Teenagers go with the moment, at the moment the show is huge with the Idols. Once it's over they have forgotten the performers for the most part and moved on. The same could happen here, but personally I WILL buy Magni, Toby and Ryan's CD. I already have pretty much every song they have performed and love them. Such good sound from all 3.

As for the girl that won Canadian Idol. She is being played on Muchmusic and local softer radio stations. Jacob Hoggard from Hedley is a complete tool and if everyone knew everything this guy says and does he would have a very small fan base.

benny - September 14, 2006 06:23 AM (GMT)
As I am in Australia and at work, I did not get a chance to watch the show live and actually caught the results on the net. I have to say that I am glad that Lukas has won the gig as I believe he probably needs it more than the others although I seriously can not see Dilana doing much in the future. Her voice is very good although she is a little crazy.
Australia has been right behind Toby and although it would have been nice for him to win, I do share in the sentiment that Supernove (or what ever the new name is) do not have very good songs for such legends in the industry. Maybe their ages are catching up with them as even their own latter music for their own bands was fairly ordinary.
My friend at work is best mates with the lead guitarist of Juke Kartel (Toby's band) and called today to advise that Toby had actually advised Supernova prior to the finale that he did not suit the band and would prefer them to choose someone else. Toby always wanted to use the show as a stepping stone for his band however is very down to earth and has loved the whole experience. I can confirm that Juke Kartel have signed a significant contract with Universal Records so look out shortly as all the music is already written. Watch out for them as they will be the next big thing. Hopefully the US will adopt them like we do here in Australia.
Anyway, Good luck to Lukas, he is unique and I would pay to see him perform. Magni is however the best of the lot and a good guy at that. Maybe Magni could front the bank 'Live', he bares a striking resemblance to the lead singer.

Anybodyhome - September 14, 2006 09:42 AM (GMT)
As if last night's finale wasn't already a forgone conclusion, to see Lukas's face as if he expected the win. Oh well, the season ended just as disappointlingly as I anticipated.

What does it say about your band and your fan base when Magni leaves with these words. "You're such a talented musician and you play so well with the band..." and "...the most consistent singer... spot on with your vocals everytime..."
But, Magni is gone. Nope, don't want the most consistent performer in the bunch nor can we have a talented musician amongst us.

Next is Toby. "...your vocal ability has never been in question... you have this range, more than any other person that has competed here, that cuts through no matter how loud the guitar gets..." Sorry, Toby, can't have the singer with the best range and an understandable, recognizable voice; that's just not our style.

So here's what we're gonna do. We are a bunch of guys who play in jeans and shirts, sometime we'll dress up with a pair of leather pants, but for the most part we look like any other garage band on the street. So we're gonna pick a glam rock looking kid with very questionable vocal talent, a single stage act and that no one can understand- that way our instrumentals will stand out. Is that what Snoozernova was looking for?

At the end of the show last night, through both Snoozernova originals, there were entire lines of songs "sung" by Lukas that I could not understand. Oh well, a 15 city tour and they're done- probably less when they discover Lukas cannot use that voice for a couple hours a night for several nights running.

On the upside for us, I'm looking forward to Magni's release and I'll watch for Toby's success, otherwise there was nothing very "memorable" at all to take from this show. Sorry, JD Fortune is a smart ass punk and should have had his butt kicked, but last season's talent level on INXS was far superior to anything here, other than Magni or Toby, perhaps. There were people getting booted last season at the halfway point that were better than the four finalists on this show.

Back to the drawing board Mr. Burnett.

squeaza - September 14, 2006 09:47 AM (GMT)
hmmph....

Oh well, it was as suspected, and we assume that they had chosen Lukas from way back in the series.

I just find it ridiculous that they say that they obviously agree with their fans based on votes for the show... Did you hear how much Toby got the audience going just before they ditched him??

Oh well, I will listen out with eagreness to what Toby's band gets up to, Magni and Dilana also, especially if Dilana gets some good songs written for her.

I have been seriously underwhelmed by the quality of Supernova's songs, and although noone can question Lukas' performing ability, it really worries me how little core there is to the tone of his voice. I for one won't be dashing out to hear them. :S:

BTW I've really enjoyed this forum - you won't see me so much around here because we don't get most of the US reality shows on TV here, and the ones that are aren't always broadcast at the same time (fingers crossed for Amazing Race though!)

Have fun and maybe we'll all be back next year, hopefully finding a singer to front the amazingly awesome house-band, who I will go out of my way to hear again (as well as rather fancying Jim the guitarist :O )

I didn't see last year's show, but could this have anything to do with the fact that INXS are a proper band??

I got thoroughly fed up with some of the @#$se licking that went on with the SN guys this season.... Fine, they're all from legendary bands, but they have to back that up with some substance in terms of music writing and performing. I LOVE watching Tommy perform because he's insane, but I don't think he's exactly the most sensitive (for a drummer!) musician around, and my favorite guitar playing in the season came last night from Rafael (I think) from the house band, not Gilby.

Welcome to ART oh_yumm and benny! Hope you all stick around!

Don't forget that we have other sections to our site as well for general discussion! Squeaza, it's been great having you around, and I know that you don't get most of the shows we watch, but pop by our General Discussion area or our Music forum!

All in all, while the band wasn't so good, I think the house band will put on an excellent concert. Some people have been saying that the level of talent wasn't great this season, and I can't compare the two seasons because I haven't seen last season. But I do think that there were enough excellent performances that I could really enjoy watching them in concert, and then leave before Supernova took the stage. Dilana, Toby and Magni would all be excellent, and I would be extremely excited to see Ryan again. Also, I enjoy many of Storm's performance, and I don't know if we'll see Josh again, but I really liked his style, even if it wasn't right for Supernova at all. All in all, while I wasn't happy with the last few episodes, I think it's been a great season... I really enjoyed the lookback last night as they recapped the season by showing clips of some of the best performances.

Hopefully the US will adopt them like we do here in Australia.

Welcome to ART benny. And I can assure you that this American will...Toby great and grew on me more and more. He's the whole package. Thanks for all the info on the band and stick around and chat about other shows and music you like.

Welcome to oh_yummm also.

Boring finale' - - predictable ending! I am glad that Gilby offered his song-writing services to Dilana because I think she could be wonderful. I do not see her going the "pop" route at all, but maintaining her rock image.

Not a bad summer of reality, but I was so hoping that "SuperNova" would have been a little more constructive in their criticism instead of maintaining the status quo. Dudes you're rockers! Tell it like it is!!!

I'm late to the wrap party, I'm afraid. As I write, I am taking a deep swig from the cup you left behind last week, and it is filled with either now-flat champagne or outright scorn, depending on which wrap party you personally attended.

Count me among the party-goers who had a blast, who thought it a fitting end for all finalists, and who thought the SN/Burnett team tried very hard to repair mid-season damage. And successfully so, in my view, such that I'd even consider attending the live event near my town next year.

I'd strain to check out House's riffs; I'd pay to watch any/all of the Top Five perform with that band. I'd join in with those who would wish to send them off to even finer solo careers than when they began this summer season. [Please bring the CurioZity, too.]

I'd be fixed on Dave N's concert act. I'd be even more transfixed by Lukas --- I actually did make out a few of his lyrics again last week (!), but oh those visuals, one-trick-type or otherwise: don't change a thing on my account for this one-night-stand of a concert!

And, if TLee performed near to the extent that those on this site say he is capable, well, wouldn't that be better than alright, too.

Yes, I think it's an invitation to an outrageous party, indeed. And parties don't last a lifetime; at very best, they might be allnighters with the requisite two-day fuzziness. That this entourage will never become a legendary, long-lived ensemble matters not at all to me; I'd be in for the utter high of witnessing first-hand this snowflake's unique aspects, and then kiss it goodbye to melt it away.

I'd take another healthy blast from a fresh bottle of bubbly --- not the vintage kind for this posse, but the sort that invites you to drink a whole lot of it in big steady guzzles. Then, I'd try to keep it down as my own head spins, gloriously, and just for one night.

[A big thanks to all on this site who contributed greatly to my enjoyment of this summer's rock season: Cheers!]

dfleminator - September 18, 2006 07:10 PM (GMT)
While it may be flat champagne, it is at least better than no champagne at all! I'm glad I got to hear your thoughts on the finale. I hope to see you in some of the other areas of the site! I enjoy your posts far too much to have them just disappear until next summer (assuming there will be another Rock Star).
