Title: Final Four
Description: 9/12 Recap - Rock Star

Well, lpatrick, after Storm got the boot, there were four left last week to compete for the final spot as the lead singer of Supernova, are you ready to find out who has what it takes?

*crickets*

Uh oh, it looks like I’m on my own this week. Well, I’ll try my best to fly solo, but if you’re really missing lpatrick, I encourage you to check out her new gig over in our Dancing With the Stars forum!

Well, we start out the show with Dilana introducing the person who the Rock Star audience has voted to come back and give an encore performance, and that person is Ryan Star. He chooses to sing his original song “Back of Your Car”. This has me ecstatic, as I recently purchased his independently released album from a few years back on iTunes. I have been listening to “Back of Your Car” a lot lately, and I am extremely excited that I will get to hear him perform it in front of a live audience for a second time. As he performs, I realize that this is the first time that I have actually wanted to get up out of my seat while watching this show. Ryan Star is truly a star, and he definitely did not disappoint with this performance. We are informed that he has a new album coming out called “Dark Horse” and that it is available (presumably for pre-sale) on the Rock Star website. Brooke tells Ryan that not only did he win the “Fans Choice Award”, but he also wins a brand new Honda CRV.

After a recap of the journey of the final four up to this point, it’s time to start to see why our final four still remain in the competition. Toby kicks off the night by singing “Karma Police” by Radiohead. Personally, I find the song quite boring, although Dave Navarro disagrees with me. When Toby sings his original song “Chemical Dreaming” I get excited again, and he does excellent, even bringing Magni on the stage to play guitar with him. I think that these two would make an awesome duo on the road together. They make an excellent pair, and their chemistry on stage together is truly amazing.

Next up is Lukas, who you may know is not a personal favorite of mine. He sings “Fix You”, by Coldplay, which some of you may know is a band I don’t care for in the least. Add the two things together, and I’m sure you can guess what I’m going to say…. “It ROCKED” psych! I was just kidding, in all honesty, I thought this performance sucked even worse than Coldplay sucks. After he murders an already bad Coldplay song, it’s time for him to perform his original: “Headspin”. I didn’t like this either of the two times he performed it last week, and not surprisingly, I think it sucks even more with the lack of instrumentation other than guitar in this song. It really shows off the badness in his voice. (And yes, badness is now a word).

Well, after that wretchedness, it’s about time we got back to decent music, and who better to start us back on the right track than Dilana? Dilana sings “Roxanne” by the Police, a song that some of you might remember was performed poorly by Chris Pierson (I know what you’re thinking… Chris who?) in the very first week of the season. Could she rock it out better than Chris did? Well, I wouldn’t say that she “rocked it out”. She actually brought the song way done, and did a really interesting rendition. I’m sure Police purists out there all despise her rendition, but personally, I found it to be very fresh and beautiful. Of course, the ending was the best part of all, as she had Toby and Magni singing backing vocals sweetly behind her, while Lukas did a weird thing with his voice, presumably trying to upstage Dilana. She finished her set off with her original “Supersoul”, and she did another good job with it, despite the fact that the songwriting wasn’t the best.

Finally, it’s time for Magni to finish off the night, and to start off his set, he sings “Hush” by Deep Purple. In my humble, yet entirely correct, opinion, this was my favorite performance of his from all season, and possibly among my favorite ten performances of the season. He did an excellent job with the song, and I wanted to hear more. Unfortunately, his original ‘When the Time Comes” was a little disappointing when compared to “Hush”, but he still did very well for himself.

So, there we have it, our final four. Who will be the ultimate lead singer of Supernova? Tune in tomorrow night at 8:00 ET to find out!

Who do you think will be the next lead singer of Supernova? Sign up and let us know!

Okay, I agree with everything except the Ryan thing. I just never got onboard with anything he did. Just when Navarro or someone says, "Hey, why don'tcha throw a guitar?" Ryan does it. "Hey, why not walk out among the audience," here comes Ryan...

I posted all my other good stuff in the other thread, but I'm really onboard with your Lukas assessment- just how bad does one have to "sing" to be on this show? The sad thing is, I have a gut feeling they're going with him tonite. From a commercial perspective and for the sake of maybe selling their CD any marketing moron could tell you Toby is the right choice. But look, they are doing it right, selling out show dates when absolutely nobody knows what they will sound like, nobody knows any tunes because they haven't been recorded yet and people are buying tickets without knowing who the frontman is.

BTW, I also thought Magni's version of Hendrix's "Fire" was pretty insane as wellas last night's "Hush." During an otherwise very boring show with a lot of mediocre performances, there were few standouts. Just to compare- last year's INXS tryout already had a CD out with the best performances by this time, a second in the works and a DVD came later. This version couldn't find 20 minutes worth of recordable material from this group. Gotta say, last year's had a lot more talent and many more memorable performances (Suzie's "Bohemian Rhapsody", Jordis's "Man Who Sold the World", Marty Casey's "Creep.") Go back and look at the songs performed on last year's Rock Star and you'll hear the same stuff we heard this year, the only difference being last year's contestants were put in a position to sing an INXS tune at a moment's notice.
