Title: ART Talk - 9/6 RS: Supernova

Epheks - September 7, 2006 01:26 AM (GMT)
Who gets the boot tonight? Please discuss tonights episode in here. Thank you.

Well, I'm gonna give props to anybodyhome... he called it right on. Toby did another fantastic job with his original as the encore. Plus he got a car on top of that. Yea for Toby. The bottom three tonight where Storm, Dilana, and Lukas. And sadly we will say good-bye to Stormy. However, Dave and the SN guys were falling over themselves to tell her how wonderful she is and how they want to back her (Dave wants to play guitar, Tommy on drums, and Jason on bass... so why is she leaving?). :huh

I thought Dilana did a great job with her song tonight. Lukas sang his original again and it wasn't any better than last night.

I missed the beginning of the show but I think Magni performed tonight as well.

I'm sure you guys caught the whole show and can give us some more info.

Epheks - September 7, 2006 04:01 AM (GMT)
Magni got to play with Supernova and I enjoy his solo stuff much better. Toby's encore was really good and I can see myself playing that song over and over.

Dilana is really annoying me lately. She is basically insulting every single fan that isn't hers for not voting for her. I am surprised SN hasn't mentioned this. Because of her recent attitude I don't see her being a frontrunner like she use to be.

Anybodyhome - September 7, 2006 09:50 AM (GMT)
You're absolutely right on about Dilana. She has developed this attitude that I could easily see becoming an issue for any group she's a part of. There's almost a prima donna side to her and it seems this is becoming more about her and not the music. Her rendition of the Cheap Trick tune was terrible and if it wasn't for the predetermined fate of Storm...

Lukas, yeah, whatever. Same old stuff, same old act. I'm completely through with the glam rock thing and I guess we'll never know if he can sing or write music because he's getting a free pass every week. Why is it that nearly everyone else on that stage is/was critiqued about their "growth" and "progress" except Lukas and Dilana?

It would have been a real kick to see Lukas go last nite and have the 2 boy/2 girl thing going into the final week.

So Magni performed with Supernoblah... The more I hear from them the more I hope that Lukas wins, because then I wouldn't feel the need to ever listen to their music again.

Toby's original was awesome yet again (I think that's two weeks in a row with an encore, kids)

I think Lukas was hoping that by performing his original from yesterday again that he could win a car as well. I was shocked that the boys didn't at least call him out on not changing up. It seemed like he was just unprepared to be in the bottom, so he had to pick a song at the last minute.

Hi all, back from our skiing holiday (it was AWESOME!!!) and so consequently missed this weeks shows. Loved all the recaps and thoughts on the performers. Glad to here that Toby looks to be the front runner.

Can't wait to watch the show on cable over the weekend!!! Plus I have the INXS concert tomorrow night! Big weekend for Urbangirl!! :laugh :laugh

dfleminator - September 8, 2006 11:57 AM (GMT)
Glad to have you back urbangirl. Toby will make an excellent solo artist imo. I'm hoping that he doesn't win, just because I can't stand Supernoblah

I surprised myself by the degree to which I could be saddened by Storm's unwarranted departure. While I certainly appreciate why and agree with her staunch supporters who were hoping that she would not win this dubious "prize", it is patently true that there are candidates remaining who don't deserve a finale appearance in her stead. The viewing audience's sincere loss, indeed.

Seemingly led by Monk Gilby's seriously misguided views of who stays/who goes (and fie on the other two SNers for rolling over and letting him be boss, anyway), the SN team has, in effect, stated the following:
- We don't seek a singer with one of the finest and truest vocal capabilities;
- We don't seek a singer who has that fine knack of captivating our audience with a multiplicity of song styles, moods and genres;
- We don't seek a gorgeous gal who has a heart of gold and would be a hoot to play and travel with;
- We don't seek a singer who could possibly induce us to keep up this farce for longer than two months --- because we like her too much to tie her to our predestined expiry date. [Granted, this one's a stretch --- the band folks don't care about others, it seems.]

And to that, I say: the curtain was long ago pulled back from your Oz-Wizard cubbyhole, and, now more than ever, I don't at all like what I have heard of your tunes or what you have shown of your character and your intentions. I release you: you are free, little shrimp band, like the gold fish who passed without much consequence at all.

Lukas: Perhaps he'll "win". He'll need gambian baskets to stop the erosion of his banks of popularity. He now fatigues me with his repetitive voice and stage act; yes, I've completely 180'd on him, I'll say, and progressively so within the past 2-3 weeks. On the subject of "Headspin": two reasons come to mind for his repeat of his original: 1) his mom called, and she couldn't understand a blessed word the first time, and was hoping she hadn't caught his gist correctly in any event; or 2) he had prepared with House Band to sing it as the Encore/Honda-winning performance, and had nothing else to give us when Toby took that honour.

Dilana: Equally fatigued on her. There can't be any mysteries and excitement left to reveal --- except perhaps further character skid marks on her highway to her deserved "end". Ta ta.

Magni: Throughout the mansion webisodes, he would capture my imagination most when he was helping his mates get a feel for their chosen performance tunes; his wonderful and caring guitar and piano freeforms helped others crystallize their own sound. House Band digs him, and he performed best with them (like anybodyhome said a few weeks back, the Hendrix was a highlight of the entire series --- and for me, mainly because of his guitar work). He visibly slouched while performing with SN this week --- and why shouldn't he.
He won't win, but he sure picked up an icily cool following. What more could he seek.

Toby: by default, the man of the hour, or of a few hours. While youthful, he appears just old and wise enough to relax and accept this SN gig for what it is --- a best-before-dated gig, a chance to plan his real future before the cream curdles.

Storm: now, you, I'll look for.

Hey BIF! Glad to be able to read another post from you!

I'm growing increasingly fatigued with the whole show. While I wasn't quite as incensed as you by Storm's departure, I would have preferred for Lukas to go, since he didn't bring them anything new. (I was shocked that they didn't call him out for that, despite calling Magni out for not bringing anything "new" in his second performance)

funnygirl - September 8, 2006 04:20 PM (GMT)
I have to say that I thought Storm's original would win her the car. Maybe it's cuz I'm a woman that I was leaning more toward her song than Toby's. I did like Toby's.

If you remember correctly, Marty and JD had the two best originals last season and it seemed like they played them often. I went out and bought Marty's "Trees" but still cringe when I hear "Pretty Vegas" (sorry Urbangirl). This being said, I completely understand why Lukas would want to get his original out again. ;)

I'm not so tired of Dilana as BIF is, but that's because I"m a huge fan of her voice. I think that's why I didn't really care for Storm in this competition. Last season, Suzy McNeil just could not convince me that she really belonged in the final 5, let alone the final 3, and this season it was Storm Large. I think Storm is what Courtney Love could be if she could only stay sober. :laugh

On Storm's departure: Rather than incensed, dflem, I think it was more like a big sigh of exasperation. Knew it was coming; saddened when the inevitable occurred. It looked like she, too, had resigned herself to the outcome.

I am with you completely concerning Lukas and his recent "sameness". The SNers have continued to bat their eyes at him, very true ---and most conspicuously during his recent performance crashes when it was least deserved. I still quite like a lot about Lukas, actually --- but I really can no longer understand him when he sings. And that's very frustrating. However, he has not attained a level of ignominy and shame that will earn him a heaping cup of scorn from the band next week, in my view; but he should indeed receive a few well-placed mild comeuppances when he is announced as Runner-Up.

Your post, fg, reminds me why music as a genre is so broadly embraced --- because there is something out there for everybody.

And SuZie McNeil was very much to my ear's liking. I loved her voice. Elsewhere in the RS threads, there was a reminiscence of her BoRhap piece last year; still smile whenever I recall her performing that.

And that brings me to a suggestion pertaining to RS's solicitation of our choice for "Comeback Kid"... It was not specified that the rawker had to be from THIS season... And I'd unequivocally (!) cast my singular vote for SuZie to return next week, if I could.

But, since I seem destined to have all manner of ill wrought upon me this week, it will be Ryan --- the furry, scowly, jowly one. *Another very big exasperated sigh*

Big Z --- come on back, Saviour Princess!

BIF and funnygirl, I enjoy reading your takes simply because we're thinking somewhat alike, yet we're posting altogether different words. It's almost like the new line of insurance commercials that have the actor or movie trailer voice guy interpretting the homeowner's woes. Oh well, you have to see them...

As BIF stated, I have grown weary of the Lukas stage show, Act IX (or whatever week it is). Not only has his voice, or lack thereof, completely chased me right out of the room, but does he not appear to be the most disingenuous character amongst this group? The other performers are lucky to get so much as a golf clap from the guy and SN keeps up with the 'attaboys' as though there is no next episode.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I think Storm will succeed well enough on her own and the idea of her fronting a band like this may have done more harm than good. She has shown signs of richness with her vocals that could be compared, talent-wise, to Jordis Unga. She knows how to sing, what to sing and how to deliver. Her original is a testament to her songwriting abilities and musical talent- it is a pretty complex song instrumentally and vocally. She turned in a great term paper. And most of her ink is pretty hot as well...

I've listened to most of Dilana's 2000 release "Wonderfool" off iTunes and I have to say I'm much more impressed with this work than anything she's done on the show. Give it a listen, you may be somewhat impressed for what she once was.

funnygirl - September 8, 2006 09:26 PM (GMT)
I totally agree about Storm. She's got the right look, the right sound and she's "out" there now. She's also got some backing from Navarro and the gang. :laugh

I guess it was hard for me to really enjoy this show because we had no clear cut idea what the band is really looking for. In fact, we STILL don't have a clear cut idea what the band is looking for. As far as the rationale behind each elimination, they gotta say something, right? :oooo

From the sounds of all your comments, it seems that not even the SN boys know what they are after. :O At least last year with INXS we knew what the back catalogue was like and the sound that the band had. (Having said that, last night was my big night out to the INXS concert. It was AWESOME!!! :D )

Funnygirl - you would certainly cringe seeing my 3 year old dance to Pretty Vegas and sing along with it!!

Having not yet veiwed this weeks show, I am kinda hoping that the rumours that Lukas winning are true. Then the others can start successful solo careers.
