Talk about tonights show in this thread.

I wasn't "dazzled" by last night show. The only ones who really performed (for me) were Magni and Toby. They are both continuing to grow on me and I don't have a front runner yet.
I think the nerves are getting to Dilana. She still has the best voice, but with all the drama something has happened to her.
Storm... Last night her original: I really don't know what to say about it. She has an amazing voice but I just kept thinking "Courtney Love the "whole" time."
Lukas mumbled, mumbled and then kicked it in. His original was the most simple song since Row Row Row Your Boat. Again, he's got a great voice but the lyrics were not there.
If SN is looking for a singer/songwriter the competition is between Magni and Toby.
Dflem and I were in the studio late last night working on the show's recap and it should be up sometime today.
What did you guys think of the originals??
squeaza - September 6, 2006 02:26 PM (GMT)
hmmmm, not sure about tonight....
maybe because I'm a fuddy duddy (albeit young) classical musician, I am really really disappointed with the standard of writing in a lot of rock songs, classics and little-known ones alike. I find it amazing that a song can be so lyric/harmony based, yet the harmony be the same as about 195 songs that has been before....
I haven't known a lot of the songs sung this series, but the ones I really remember are the ones that had either a memorable tune (yes, a tune!) or a really different harmonic sequence.
I was rather disappointed in quite a few of the originals tonight because of this. Especially Lukas', because in various clinics he has shown that he has a very good ear for melodic lines, but tonight chose to sing a song that seemed to have no discernable melody
I really liked the energy in Magni's performance, but can't remember the song at all. I really liked Storm's for the way she used it to show off her voice and range of colours, but I can't remember the tune. The only one that stuck in my head was Toby's, and I thought what they said was spot on about him getting the audience singing along on the first hearing.
Having been away for a month, and just catching up on all the shows in the last few days, I've been a bit sad to see the decline of my beloved Dilana :( I still really enjoyed her singing of the cover tonight, and I did enjoy her original for the performance, although the music left me underawed (is that a word?). Somehow all the things that have gone on with her have taken off a little of the gloss on her performances though.
As for who could front the band after tonight????? :suspicious I don't have the foggiest. My frontrunner would be Toby after the last few weeks. I think Lukas has really opened up recently but I still have many doubts about the lack of concentrated tone in his voice. Magni I love, but I don't think he's right for SN. In fact, why don't they just form a band with the house-band and stuff SN... I love storm, but I can't see her winning above any of the other 4. I still think Dilana is in with a chance but she obviously doesn't have much imagination. Me, I don't care about the lyrics because I never listen to them, but I need interesting music.
I have a brother of a friend in the UK who I desperately want to audition if there is another season of this - his song-writing is to die for - wish his band had released official versions of their songs so I could post it. Would put all these guys to shame. He was classically trained too hehe.
sorry, seem to have a case of finger diarrhoea..... can't stop typing.... HELP..... :tireder :tireder

We've watched the show each week and DVR'd it so we could zip thru the commercials and see the performances a couple times and critique them before deciding who we thought was next. Last nite I didn't even bother to watch them a second time... maybe this evening before the elimination episode.
Am I really showing my age when I am completely flabbergasted with a rock performer who doesn't know a classic song from one of the all-time great bands? Dilana doesn't know "Behind Blue Eyes" and she's bent on changing it up? Please listen, learn, absorb and feel the original before you start changing it around. The lead-in alone turned me off to her performance and perhaps I would have felt better about it had I not known she didn't even know the freakin' song! Her original tune was shallow and I completely agree with Gilby in that her lyrics were too literal and left nothing to think about or envision. This episode may have put her in the bottom 3 again.
As usual, Magni's vocals were right on the mark- he just seems to have no problem maintaining his key, whichever he decides to sing in. The beginning of "USSR" sounded a bit Las Vegas nightclub, but as the song went on, his voice became stronger. I really liked his original, but he does lack a little something in the stage presence department. With a little emotion and showmanship, he would clearly be the front-runner.
Storm did an acceptable job with "Suffragette City." To her great fortune, Dave was onstage with her and this only helped her performance. I was watching him play more than I was listening to her sing. I wanted to hear a couple good licks from him. Her original song was the most musically complex song I've ever heard from a singer in either season. It had some hop-hop feel, some good rock and also allowed her to show her range and vocal ability. It was a great song, I enjoyed the instrumentation as well as the lyrical structure.
At this point in the show I'm digging the fact that this group is doing some rock and roll originals. If we'll painfully remember last season, all the contestants seemed to get into these cookie cutter ballads with the exception of JD... and we all know what happened next.
I left the room when Lukas began mush-mouthing his way thru a Bon Jovi tune. Look, one of the things that makes Jon Bon Jovi so popular and "listenable" is his voice- clear, enunciating and people can understand the words to his music, regardless of the tune, hard rock, ballad or otherwise; you can always understand what he's singing. As far as I'm concerned, Lukas hacked that song into an unrecognizable bunch of noise. If I were to be in an arena and that came up, I'd be taking my restroom break or going for another beer. It was terrible as was his original. Granted, he actually put some feeling into the song, but it was pretty simple and showed little song-writing skills. I just can't deal with the voice anymore, it's the same every week, nothing changes and I will reiterate what I said weeks ago- there is no way I could stand for a 2 hour show and listen to that voice. Remember this was the guy in Week 3 that didn't know "Let's Spend the Night Together" and I, again, tend to show disdain for those who do not learn, want to know or understand their past or the past history of the music they are performing. Ed Sullivan demanded the Stones change the lyrics for this tune when they were to perform it on his show back in the day! You must understand the historical significance of that!
I did not care for Toby's version of "Mr. Brightside," it was not one of his stronger performances. Quite the contrary, his original was a song SN can make theirs with very little work. It has the hook, the lyrics and the guy to perform it in Toby. Do not be surprised to see Toby win this thing and "Throw it Away" becomes a big single from the new CD.
Be honest and be objective: the all-around best singer, songwriter and performer onstage is Toby. Next is Magni, and he can join Toby at the top with a little work on his performance, his stage presence.
We shall see later this evening! Cheers!

Welcome back squeaza!!! Take your time getting caught up. ;) I agreed with 90% of your post. The only thing I disagree with is the two women. I loved Storm's original and thought that Dave brought out the best of her performance-wise. I was ready to kick her to the curb until last night. I loved Dilana's cover, but her original was rediculous. I hope she's eliminated tonight because I SO want her to get on with a solo career. I would buy a CD of her singing the Dictionary just because I love the tone of her voice.

This cracked me up. Reminded me of the line from the movie "10 Things I Hate About You": "I know you can be overwhelmed and you can be underwhelmed, but can a person just be whelmed?"
This is rock & roll and apparently anything goes. B)
I love Magni as the frontman for this band; however, I think the bad boy is gonna win it for the second season in a row. :no
Anybodyhome - September 6, 2006 03:48 PM (GMT)
And just who is the "bad boy?" Certainly Lukas thinks he is and Toby I think is just more into having a good time while he's performing.
BTW funnygirl, have you checked Dilana Smith's CD on iTunes, "Wonderfool" from 2000? It's 6 years old but that's 6 fewer years of smoking and drinking in her vocals. I personally think the tune "PMS (Pack My Suitcase)" from this CD would have been better suited for her original last night... if it was in fact an original.
funnygirl - September 6, 2006 04:57 PM (GMT)
I believe Lukas is. He's never "fully" prepared for any of the clinics, acts all nonchalante about them (as if he can't take this stuff serious) and he has no problem telling folks like it is without apologizing for it later (ala Dilana).
No, I have not checked out Dilana on-line yet. Are you saying that her voice sounds purer? I think it's the whiskey and cigarettes tone in her voice that I really like. :oooo Please don't tell my kids I just said that.
I will check out the iTunes stuff today if I get a chance.

I don't equate "bad boy" with a bad hair cut, a skunk dye job and his disregard for his fellow competitors. He doesn't express any enthusiasm nor does he even appear to appreciate the performances going on that do not include him. At times he appears to display a total dislike for some of those remaining on the stage.
That being said, Lukas and Dilana have both fallen back to the pack and I think both may find themselves in the bottom 3 tonite. Marty Casey didn't make INXS because of his vocal style. His voice is naturally an octave higher than what the band was looking for and in the same vain, I'm not sure SN is going to select Lukas simply because they would collectively like to have their fans understand the words to their music. I gotta be honest with you, I couldn't understand the first 4 lines of his Bon Jovi performance last nite and I know the song! Look, my take on Lukas- he's living behind the false front of his appearance and this acts as a shield in that he comes off as unapproachable, just the way he likes it. I have grown beyond the freak-show appearance, a noveau Flock of Seagulls, and I really don't like anything about him other than his stage presence. His vocals lack plain English and are, at best, laborious to understand.

:laugh That's the first post I've laughed out loud at in a long time. I was giving him the "bad boy" title because of his antics at the beginning of the show with calling people out on their poor performances and wanting to know who everyone thought the bottom three would be. When they did the first song writing clinic (in groups) he gave them a chorus and then took off and started bugging everybody else. His complete lack of participation in the "love fest" amongst the remaining contestants, etc. He's trying to play like he's the rock & roll badass but it's coming acrossed all wrong I guess. :D

Yeah, I got ya! Your take on what was going on around the house I'd forgotten, but you're absolutely right. I'm hoping the SN guys are gathering all this info; let's face it, a front man has to have some song writing skills or lyrical input or something to contribute... besides makeup tips.
Oh, one other thing. If Toby gets his original number as an encore, I'm betting Storm is out tonite.
