lpatrick: It's a Rock Star Tuesday night dflem. With only eight performers left, it's gonna be a stripped down :O acoustic show. Dave and Tommy take this a little too far and strip their shirts off (ok, lpatrick didn't mind too much);) , but when we come back from commercial, the censors got a hold of them and they are wearing clothed again. I guess it's just too much skin and ink for network tv. We will also be treated to a quartet orchestra. What do you think about that?Dfleminator: The skin and ink can be covered up. I'm perfectly content with the decisions of the censors. As far as the orchestra, it brings a much different dynamic, and I'm sure some singers will struggle with not being able to do the heavy rock thing, while others will be content with an orchestra behind them.
lpatrick: Did they lose our invitations to the Vegas trip? I don't know if I could have partied like a rock star? They all seemed to have a good time. The band took them to a place called The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel. It sounds like this will be were the band and their new lead singer will be on New Year's Eve. Who's signed up for the road trip?Dfleminator: I think my invitation got lost in the mail. As far as the New Year's Eve party, I call shotgun! (As long as Dilana heads the band )
lpatrick: Once again it was an interesting song selection. It's another chance to perform with Gilby and Dilana's wants it. But Toby steps up to the plate and barters with her. It must be a stripping theme because Dilana says the only way she'll let him have the song is if he'll run around the pool naked. And in true rock star form, he does!Dfleminator: This is more of what I like to see. No, not the stripping, but the fighting over the song to play with a member of Supernova. Dilana gave Toby the chance to prove he was a rock star, and Toby definitely stepped up, no doubt about it.
lpatrick: What are your thoughts on the chance to do an original song tonight?Dfleminator: I don't know, lp. I go back and forth on this. On the one hand, it's good to have a decent songwriter as a part of the band, but at the same time, I'd much rather have a decent singer who can't write, than a decent writer who can't sing. If it's going to be an original song, it better be pretty damn good.
lpatrick: Zarya gets her wish and performs her original...in Spanish. She's got good vocals, but my Spanish is a little rusty. I didn't understand a word. She could have been singing,"I'm a little tea pot..." I know, we can look up the lyrics on the official website, but who's got the time?!? She needs to be solo. Jason is totally impressed. I think he's just in love. Gilby thought it was beautiful, but still wants her to "rock" a song. I'll give her a C+ for effort.Dfleminator: It was a decent song, but I agree wholeheartedly with Tommy when he says that it's not for Supernova. Also, I keep hearing Gilby telling her to "rock" a song, and she keeps telling him she will, but I want to know when that will be?
lpatrick: Magni performs Starman by David Bowie. It was up-tempo for him, a nice change. He looked very comfortable tonight. Tommy loves Bowie and thinks he rocked it. They talked alot about the white suit. I guess it's ok, since it's not Labor Day yet.Dfleminator: I thought it was a lot different from the usual Magni, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. It just looked and sounded cool. I particularly liked when Gilby gave him a hard time for not getting the audience involved and Magni talked about how in the "old country" they would sing. Sharp with that one!
lpatrick: Patrice sings "Message in a bottle," by the Police (great song). Booooring. That's all I can say about her. I thought she was better at the beginning but she just keeps getting worse. SN all think she sang well but lacked intensity.Dfleminator: She's given up I think. She barely moved on the stage, and I think that she knows that she just wasn't cut out to be with Supernova. It honestly looked like she was putting the guys of Supernova to sleep, and I know that Supernova will not be releasing an album of lullabies soon, so the future does not bode well for Patrice.
lpatrick: Lukas decides to sit for "Hero," by Chad Kroeger. I was transfixed but would rather of had him standing to get more intensity. I thought he did an amazing job. Tommy agreed with me about the sitting. I can't stand it either. Gilby said he was incredible but Jason noticed that he started to revert back to closing his throat.Dfleminator: This is a hard one for me to judge. First off, I can't stand Nickelback or Chad Kroeger. Second of all, I really want to like Lukas, Third of all, Lukas gives me the heebity-ba-jeebities. Overall, it was decent I suppose, but I didn't like it.
lpatrick: Storm performs Gloria Gaynor's, "I Will Survive." (I'm not too sure about that honey.) This gal has got a set of pipes but she's like an actual car wreck. I didn't want to look, but once I did, I couldn't look away. What is wrong with her?? Tommy said the sautee is the wrong sauce. Actually they all dislike the performance. She comes back that she hasn't recovered from Vegas. Too bad, so sad. If you wanna run with the big dogs....Dfleminator: Ok, prepare yourselves.... I have liked Storm for a while. She hasn't been my favorite, but she's been running neck and neck for second place with a few others. That being said, I have to say that while tonight's performance was not musical brilliance, I think that she should get credit where credit is due. Dave mentioned that Marty did "Hit Me Baby One More Time" last season. Unfortunately I didn't see that season, and so I missed how Marty apparently pulled that one off (which is a shame, since I'm sure it was spectacular). I think that Dave's comparison of "Time After Time" to "I Will Survive" was quite weak. Cindy Lauper was at least considered to be in the "rock" genre of her time. Gloria Gaynor is not, and never will be considered rock. Overall, I didn't think Storm did as terribly as Supernova said she did.
lpatrick: Toby will have a chance to shine as he performs "Solisbury Hill," by Peter Gabriell with Gilby. I was so impressed. I think this was his best performance yet. Plus he gets extra points for not grinding on Gilby. This guy seems very humble and listens. I like that. He impressed SN too with his vocals and backside. :D Tommy Lee says, "Welcome."Dfleminator: Yes, I am happy that he did no grinding with Gilby. It was definitely an excellent performance, probably my favorite of the week so far. I couldn't help noticing though, that when Toby decided to break out the Bongos, Jason looked really impressed, while Tommy - not so much.
lpatrick: Ryan sings "In the Air Tonight," by Phil Collins. I have high expectations for this song because it's a fave from way back when. The beginning was just ok, but when the song and Ryan kicked in it got much better. Dave tells him it's the best performance of the night and Gilby is enjoying his transformation.Dfleminator: I still can't get over what a change Ryan has gone through since the beginning. He is starting to really prove that he belongs on this show, and if he continues the way he's going, I wouldn't be shocked at all if he ended up fronting the band. The intensity in his voice has me riveted to the screen. It's been a long time since I heard a voice that commanded so much attention. Ultimately I'm very impressed.
lpatrick: Last and of course never least, Dilana performs the classic "Cats in the Cradle," by Harry Chapin. What more words can we say about her and her performances. It was excellent. Her smoky voice and confidence is fantastic. Dave put it well when he told Ryan that he spoke too soon when he said that his was the best performance of the night. Dave's probably still got chills. Dfleminator: Well, I loved this performance too, however, I had to say that I disagreed with Dave. I think Ryan's was still the best of the night, but I think Dilana might finally get her second encore tonight.
lpatrick: Before the show ends, Patrice, Toby (what), and Zayra are in the bottom three. I call for another double elim and say good-bye to Patrice and Zayra. But that's just me. Dfleminator: Yes, I'm not sure what's going on with Toby being in the bottom three. There's something seriously wrong with that. Also, Zayra won't be leaving yet, the boys are still in love. I think after Patrice's uninspired performance, she will be out the door tonight.
lpatrick: Good show dflem... Glad you could make it into the studio tonight. Wishing all is well with you and yours, each and every one of you who have spent your time with us. Until next time.
