Title: ART Talk - 08/08 Rockstar Supernova
Epheks - August 9, 2006 12:22 AM (GMT)
They perform tonight. Will Gilby be grinded a second time? Find out and discuss tonights show in here.
dfleminator - August 9, 2006 02:15 AM (GMT)
Nope, no grinding of Gilby, but he definitely met his match in Dilana. That girl does not shrink away when Gilby plays, but just rocks it out. I love her attitude, and she has this whole competition locked by now.

Great episode tonight. Dilana just plain rocks. I wish all of the SN guys would have gotten up there as a suprise to rock with her. Most everyone did great. I'm over Jill and Patrice.
fallindownblue - August 9, 2006 05:36 AM (GMT)
A very good night of performances. Storm did a fantastic job of Champions. What appeared to be Dilana's plan to get Lukas to sing something that would expose his weakness didn't seem to work as SN liked it. I preferred Marty's version from last year, but was okay with this as well Dilana is quite the rocker and, of course, was awesome. I guess she loses a bit of an edge in the song-writing department as SN didn't like her lyrics the other day. I don't how important that is to her. My guess for bottom 3 are Zahyra (please), Jill, and Patrice to stay there as they were at the end of the show, or Josh replacing one fot them
Epheks - August 9, 2006 06:17 AM (GMT)
Magni did a hell of a job and was my favourite for the night and even tied with Ryan's Losing my Religion for best in show. Lukas' voice doesn't work for me, especially on that song which is one of my all-time favourites. Dilana was excellent as well as Storm.
For the bottom 3 I agree with Zahyra and Jill. The other I am not sure.
FatOld&Bald - August 9, 2006 06:45 AM (GMT)
I see Dilana and Magni as true artists. They know their craft. Their performances and emotions connect the audience both to the song and the singer. The others are at varying stages along the way. I'll grudgingly admit that Lukas is closer than most of the others right now. (I'm sorry, actually no, I'm not, but every time I see him now I wonder what he'd look like in an elf costume singing the misfit song with Rudolph.....ok so there's a half-empty bottle in his hand and the reindeer may be a little stoned.....)
Ryan, Storm, Josh, and Toby will make it someday. They're gaining more loyal fans each week. Heck, Zarya will make it too once she drops this attempt to do rock and goes back to Spanish ballads. Jill and Patrice will find work, if not a large fan base.

fallin' tell me more about this... I'm not watching the feeds so I don't know what's going on in the house. I can't imagine Dilana being the type of person to try and hurt/expose a weakness. I get such a good vibe from her, like she supports everyone. But again, I'm not seeing the whole house issues.
Epheks, I love that song too but I thought Lukas did a good job. He's not constricting his throat as much as he's done in the past. I thought last night was a total improvement.
Zayra needs to do something like Enya. With her accent and taste for the different, she's not the front woman for this band.
Magni did do a great job, especially without the house band backing him. It was him and his vocals, an awesome job. If Dilana doesn't get the encore, it should be him.

| Will Gilby be grinded a second time? |
Thankfully, no; he was grounded for the first time, wasn't he! Such fine and natural choreography between Big D/Gilby: the in-tandem gusty removal of jackets pre-perf; the mic-share; the concluding triumphal rock-style-lock-embrace. Gilby was very much the chaser in this performance, and Dilana the very worthy, gracious and responding recipient. Absolutely top notch sound and visuals. She's thoroughly entrenched as Top Cat.
But not Top Hat, as it turns out! My alien stars! That performance of Z's helps to explain her post-perf blog diary that read: NOTE TO SELF: return Mick Mars' shoes and Cirque du Soleil's garb. Yowza! Our own larger-than-life performance artiste had a thread of good vocals in there somewhere tonight... or was that just a dangling participle in the costume of life? Keep her for a bit, boys. There are several remaining who are harder on the ENT and eye caverns, and certainly, on the psyche (Freud/Jung debate reference: cheers to dflem and FOB!). She's the ultimate in hot-weather fun, and we'll see her in September, or lose her, to a summer love...
... like Lucas, perhaps? Pick the bad boys of summer before the sobering fall season sets in! "I had the time of my life", I heard Ms Beals naively say. Sufficiently wobbly and honest to proclaim HE DELIVERED! A most calculated and timely "reveal" of that specially-archived voice, though, wasn't it; Burnett's "millions" of others either agree/disagree with Lucas' talent and appeal, but none will dare own up to channel-flipping during this performance. I'm truly attentive to his antics, actually. [FOB: Delighted that you just may reconsider whether being a little offside is actually OK for this show, for this band, for its audience! Pathetic fallacy in store for him? --- not our dance card to fill; ours only to observe as he makes it unfold.]
... or like Magni, on the other hand? Perhaps your biological pangs lean you toward developing keener family values this summer? Well, have we got a safe and fuzzily appealing choice for you! Paradoxically, I was very much visiting this camp, too. His performance joyfully overcame the milque-toast impressions he had been emitting heretofore. I did not at all consider this a mere accoustic strum; this was fine, uncorked and unencumbered rock. Such fine power from a solo perf; I'm on the record with Epheks in that regard.
Switching to a few random notes about other notables this past evening:
Storm XXL: Fine work, girl. Excellent vocals and good presence; love the way her hand curls the mic stand like a cat's when you stroke it just right. She's an appealing sticker.
Ryan: better than watching paint dry. Black or of any other colour. He's in the group that proffers some entertainment and some prowess --- even lioness last night. Would that he might have retained the furry headgear a tad longer prior to revealing the smudgy raccoon eyes that only a promiscuous nighthawk could envy or admire the morning after... He lives to rage and prowl another week, albeit prettily on little panther feet.
Josh: the man on the cusp. How else to assemble a B3 from last night but to begrudgingly include him. He was fine, enough, and SN seemed quietly encouraged. Personally, I did not mind the guitar chain; I recall his less-than-successful attempts to move about and sing at the same time. I rather enjoyed the soulful reggae sway he has to deliver when he is standing still. The interstate tune was a detour for him, though, and TLee overpowered once again --- and that's to TLee's credit, because who would deny always keeping half an eye on him regardless of front man? Josh should look forward to once again being very successful and engaging when he ultimately resumes his own career without the uber-rock distraction. Cheers, mon.
And why is Josh in the B3? Because it would not at all surprise if the groundswell that I'll call e-Z-Save continues its chant like a SoCal car dealer, and propels her to 4th bottom.
Which leaves the bona fide B2:
Patrice: Her pre-perf diary: How can I flavour the tofu this time? let's see... back to the teenage hairtufts... I'm sure they liked that last time... and I'll add the guitar... Yes! that looks right! Post-perf diary: Oh, Dilana, I know you're in the safety of the pod after such a fine and confident performance, but thank you so awfully much for your extra-enthusiastic display during my act! But OMG, girlfriend, teach me how to please them! I'm trying so very hard...
Patrice will bear the burden of selecting yet one more tofu flavouring agent for next week.
Jilly: Where have we seen this before? --- oh, right. Right here last week, and sort of the week before. And, like being a little bit pregnant (which "science" now tells us, BTW, IS possible, so say the drug purveyors), Jilly's only a bit disgraced now. She must finally be given the SN-seal-of-approval for release, I should say. When she's been parolled, all will know exactly what they'd get by attending her gigs going forward --- and that, no doubt, is fine enough for that certain subset. And very fine enough for those of us who needn't go there again. I'm hoping that dflem need not resurrect his perfect "NOOOOOOOOOO" again this week.

:( Missed it because I was in a plane somewhere over Mongolia I think :(
Sounds like Dilana pulled out a performance once again?? What was the song?
I will have 4 weeks of shows recorded to watch when I get back but I want to see them NOW
FatOld&Bald - August 9, 2006 04:24 PM (GMT)
I love these posts. "promiscuous nighthawk"....still laughing. That could work as a title for so many things.
BIF, where does one find these pre-perf blog entries?

FO&B: Umm, you must mean, what did I have for breakfast? I'm afraid these facetious little thoughts come from my own keyboard. But I know you knew that, and I'll have to look into who was using my log-in while I was still fast asleep. Sorry about that.
Squeaza: Recall reading somewhere that you're a classical piano player on your way to Scotland for a few weeks? --- cheers, and all the best there.
Dilana/Gilby combo song was Won't Get Fooled Again (The Who). It was special, indeed.
FatOld&Bald - August 9, 2006 05:32 PM (GMT)
Didn't know that, BIF, but it was highly entertaining all the same. I look forward to each post.
Scotland, Squeaza? I'm envious. I'm one of the strange people in this world that absolutely loves the sound of bagpipes.
OK, back to the topic. I'm ok with Lucas winning. As the weeks have passed, I've gotten to really enjoy many of our contestants just for themselves. I'd rather see Dilana, Magni, Storm, Ryan, Josh and Zarya (but that goes without saying) on their own, unencumbered by this "almost band." So left with Toby, Lukas, Jill and Patrice, I'm totally ok with Toby or Lukas winning.
LPatrick, before you smack me for my "almost band" comment, I've no doubt that they are great musicians. I'll take your word for that because I haven't followed their careers up to this point, and they seem like decent people as well. They're still trying to work out their own sound. I just think some of the contestants would be sidetracked by it, nifty though it will undoubtedly be.
Umm...is it safe to come out?
funnygirl - August 9, 2006 08:22 PM (GMT)
The only e-violence happening in ART will come from the Battle-Axe herself and that is I! Any questions? :suspicious
Dilana's performance would have been perfect had Gilby decided NOT to open his mouth and sing with her. That was awful!!!
Lukas' performance was good until he got kicked in the nuts and decided to go soprano. (my ears are still ringing).
Patrice isn't nearly as good as she's convinced she is!!
I loved Toby, Magni', Josh and Ryan's performances last night.
I'm over Zayara and I hope SuperNova is too.
As far as the song-writing clinic goes, you can go to MSN.com and check out the songs in their entirety. In my humble opinion, Lukas had the best lyrics and Dilana had the worst. Ryan definitely worked the hardest but he was also being distracted constantly by Lukas.

FO&B... I'm not the smacker around here. ^FG is the one to watch out for. ;)
I am in agreement that Supernova is still cultivating a "sound." I think they have their ideas, but they really need that front(wo)man in place to really be solid.
FatOld&Bald - August 10, 2006 12:01 AM (GMT)
Of course, L. Though a few hours ago I did consider two young Jedi apprentices released in my general direction with active lightsabers and the simple instruction of "go play."
fallindownblue - August 10, 2006 08:52 PM (GMT)
about Dilana's test of Lukas:
After the songs had been revealed, Dilana and Lukas were chilling at a table outside and she encouraged him to take Creep because it would be perfect for him.
But in a private interview, she said she felt compelled to talk Lukas into taking that song because requires a range she doesn't think he has. She said let's just see if he can open up his throat and let us actually hear the words, as well. She said that if he can't perform this song, then that should be exposed because he shouldn't be fronting Supernova. This, of course, is how I remember it and not her exact words!

Yeah, FO&B, my young padawans are strong with the force and dangerous with the many lightsabers they own.
Thanks for the info fallindownblue. I agree with her thought process though. It was a song that need some range. I'm glad Lukas stepped it up and opened his throat. Jason has been telling him to do that all along. Maybe in her own way she was trying to help him. :D
mashnodash - August 13, 2006 03:53 AM (GMT)
Couldn't help seeing a little Axel ROSE sound in Dilana's voice in The Who song. Was it just me or did anyone else hear that too? Just a little swaying from side to side and she could fill Axel's shoes. That's no small order as I'm sure most would agree as not even Axel can fill his own shoes these days. Luv to hear her do a GNR song.

Ok, that's just funny and I really am laughing out loud right now.
Welcome to ART and hope you stick around and talk about the show with us.
