Title: ART Talk - Rock Star Supernova 8/1
Boo - August 1, 2006 11:20 PM (GMT)
You know the drill, here's the place where we talk about tonight's performances.
FatOld&Bald - August 2, 2006 02:27 AM (GMT)
Ryan just shocked me. When he started, I was thinking I couldn't wait for him to go and then this guy that I didn't like made me love a song I never really liked. I'm a convert now or to quote the Monkees, I'm a Believer.
Dilana was great as always. I was surprised at her reaction to her last performance on the reality episode. She said it was her worst performance and she was embarrassed by it. She just doesn't know how good she is.
I was worried for Storm. Storm was worried for Storm if you had a chance to watch the clips from the rockstar site. She can sing anything. She makes it all work. Gal's got some serious sense too.
Magni said he was going to go and cry after the band said they would fly his family out to see him. I knew he was singing to them as he ended his song. I'll probably be the one crying if I play the clip again. His wife and child are lucky to have him, and he, them.
lpatrick - August 2, 2006 03:10 AM (GMT)
I will agree with your whole post FOB!..are you using mind control over lpatrick?
I thought, "Oh no, more depression from Ryan." But it was really good.
Dilana is the bomb. And I think she's humble which is even better.
Storm actually acted normal tonight. I liked it.
Jill has to go.
dfleminator - August 2, 2006 03:23 AM (GMT)
Ryan was my favorite of the night. I was disappointed by Dilana, but I still think she's great... just wasn't big on her song this week. I prefer crazy Storm, but I will agree... Jill has to (and will) go.
FatOld&Bald - August 2, 2006 03:47 AM (GMT)
Storm isn't crazy. I think the eye thing she does is just a left over part of the act that she's used to doing in all her performances prior to the show. Storm, along with Magni and Dilana, ok Toby as well, are the only adults in the group. Everyone else seems either unstable in some way or childish to me.
Agreed, Dilana definitely has some measure of humility, but what I saw on the video clip was someone tearing at herself if only for a moment. Lukas is doing it too lately, though it seems to be more running and hiding than tearing. Humility and he have ever been strangers until now.
Dilana has had a life that seems harder than most. I think all people keep their old pain to some degree, some using it to endure or overcome other hardships as they progress, others allowing it to limit them. Dilana may not see herself as a phoenix, but I do. She keeps that pain awful close though.
I no longer care whether or not the others go or in what order. I don't even care all that much who wins right now. I just want to hear much more of Dilana, Magni, Storm, and now Ryan in the future wherever it might take them.
As for mindcontrol, L, I have no such power or I would not be sharing an apartment with my cat, correction, her cat, and he's under the impression that he's a tiger and my knee seems to be the only prey around at times....and....
Seriously though, I say well-met, Kindred.
lpatrick - August 2, 2006 01:00 PM (GMT)
LOL FOB. Off Rock Star topic: The cat actually lets you share the apartment. ;)
beforeiforget - August 2, 2006 04:06 PM (GMT)
Wonderful notes from each of you concerning one of the finer summer hours of TV that did not involve a sports uniform! Quelle show last evening!
Dilana is non pareil. My home is audibly and loudly whooping and hooting for this outstanding performer and wonderful gal. So consistently enthralling and so very gifted. As FO&B and LPat have already aptly commented on her humility and fragility issues, may I add that I have noticed those traits as well --- but to a lesser degree of concern than a trained eye, perhaps. I think she is so very natural, and naturally/understandably in a state of heightened attention and pressure. No San Andreas episode ahead, I do sincerely hope. Mongst all contenders, she appears best equipped to handle all that could eventuate. [And, referencing a past post to Lukas in this regard --- he seems at the other end of the spectrum and more likely to fall victim ...]
SN: they are collectively and completely captivated by her; she envelopes them. And I think she likes them, and seeks the 1-year gig. She'll sail forward deservedly, and right on through the coming year when she fronts that band. And who wouldn't go witness first-hand that special package.
Her fellow combatants: they demonstrate their full respect for her at all times, whether in the mansion or at the theatre --- the supreme acceptance. Yet, they must inwardly feel like they are watching someone else's F1 team be 30 seconds ahead with but 10 laps to go. [non sequitor: thanks, Dilana, for providing an opportunity for me to slide in a reference to my other passion, and to Michael Schumacher for making it happen for all these years!]
Fashion File update: when Dave N envies your leather/stocking pants combo without ridicule and only the sincerest of drool, then you assuredly have made the 'A' list... Don't risk disappointment by asking your local purveyor for this item just yet.
And what about that Ryan. Such very cool work on Losing My Religion, a song that has been done extremely well by very many. It's just a fine song. His accompaniament held particular magic --- not easy in a theatre that size to extract the level of subtlety that he did from a grand. Excellent. Have never been as concerned as SN for his leathered grainy frown-filled expressions; part of his presence and arguably his charm, in my view.
But I 'm driven to some concern about my bi-polar impressions of Tough Ryan. Last night, it was a little like witnessing his recovery from a challenging illness: he gained lots of points, but for how long and to what end? I believe the disease is still fatally troubling for him, so shall we all just rejoice that his quality of life has improved for the time he has yet to spend with us? --- why not. I'm all for appreciating what each moment presents. But work on your mansion segments, bro: you're coming off with a tad too much disregard for the gals and/or the weak you live among. Your attitudinal condition may impair you more severely than will your performance health.
And of our Curiosity Z, or CurioZity: well! I'm as dumbstruck as the Pod Folks. And as pleasantly supportive! I am refreshed, oddly, by watching her interact with band and contestant types. Cheers to you for baring your soul, Zayra (and back, and sides and most else) and being nothing but yourself. Most of the remaining 11 don't deserve the final prize, and she's among that group, so I'm wholeheartedly behind keeping this curious goddess until she can transform herself and us no more. She may just redefine "talent". I'm not naive enough to think that might dare include a vocal capability! --- that would be goofy! But I laughed out loud affectionately, and whooped and recalled her performance fondly --- so that can be "talent" in my entertainment world.
And of Poor Jilly: I had deferred passing judgment on her in this post till the final bell. And that's what will sound, loudly and rightly for this poor creature. Why am I compelled to describe her as valiant and stoic in her defence of the most hopeless of causes? --- Because I can recall no single contestant who has endured such palatable disdain from Pod and mansion-mate alike. I'm not at all willing to condone that sort of public dressing-down on any reality show; strikes me as so gratuitous and unnecessary --- we (the audience) can get the message in so many other and more clever manners... But she WAS horrible, I'm afraid, and no doubt is considering her "what, now?" right now. I don't know what else to suggest.
A closing thought: How thoroughly surprising for me, a luddite to Motley Crue-dom and hence a first-timer to experience TLee's instrumental talent, to find I very much enjoyed it! An incredibly entertaining set --- fun to watch, fun to hear, impossible to measure...! The drum kit, I mean. Size? oh, never mind. Looks like great fun and energy, and worth seeing this bunch when they're ready.
Cheers.
Off topic redux (thanks for the permission, lpat!): I am building a small ark at home: 2 cats, 2 bunnies, 2 cardinals if I count the team outside my courtyard. The alpha cat believes the bunnies were just for him, as his pets --- it's fun to watch the transference among the species...
lpatrick - August 2, 2006 04:25 PM (GMT)
beforeiforget...Tommy Lee is probably one of the best drummer's ever. His drum set is always massive. During one tour with the Crue, his drumset was on a riser and did a full 360 turn, no around but end over end. He played whilst upside down! He's an amazing musician. A little misunderstood, but deep down inside a good person. The Crue's first two albums, Too Fast for Love and Shout at the Devil have some very good track. Their singer (Vince Neil) sounds like a duck most of the time, especially live, but musically they always rocked.
beforeiforget - August 2, 2006 04:43 PM (GMT)
Incredible, lpat! I just may need to seek out your kind recommendations, and perhaps in a DVD where I can witness what sounds to be a spectacular display! Gravity-defying and orbital? --- now, those are new aspects of "SuperNova" I hadn't considered. And if Vince Neil were to have a twin or even a sibling, the pair may just qualify for my ark --- although pocket pets had heretofore been my specialty!
Cheers to you for kindly bringing this forward for me.
FatOld&Bald - August 2, 2006 05:29 PM (GMT)
BIF, You're right. Maybe there is a sickness within Ryan, but he's fighting it. The tide seemed to turn for a moment last night. Will he lose to it in the end? Maybe. Artists being among the more sensitive of people may feel their wounds more deeply. He is a bit disrespectful, but since he's a New Yorker, I think he's doing rather well. Besides, Dana and Patrice irk the heck out of me. Patrice simply lives on DefCon 1 and Dana has just recently started hanging out at D2. (tattoo indeed.....something on her irritating little pixie face I hope, actually most of it.....mumble...mutter....)
The paragraph on Z had me going. Had to wipe my eyes. Dave and the SN guys had time for comments because they took a commercial break before responding, but they choked. It also appears the Jason is simply driven to distraction by her. I don't get it, but hey, each to his own cuz if you turn the volume off, Jill suddenly works for me.
L, I really, really want to dislike Tommy.....but dang it all, I just can't. You're absolutely right that there's good in him. It may always have been down deep but it's poking through the....other stuff.... every now and again. If it ever came to it, he'd fight on the side of the angels.
lpatrick - August 2, 2006 08:21 PM (GMT)
Tommy Lee has not made the brightest decisions in life, but he is only human. A great talent, yet only human. I've followed his career from the beginnings and deep down, he is a good guy. In a lot of interviews, he can be humble. He's a father of two and he greatly loves his children. Most people just think he's a freak but he's really genuine. However, if you don't like the person, you still have to give the man lots of credit for talent.
FatOld&Bald - August 2, 2006 08:25 PM (GMT)
Oh, I am beginning to like him, fighting it all the way, but it's happening.
funnygirl - August 2, 2006 08:59 PM (GMT)
I don't know why ya'all are getting all philisophical with this show, but it's pure unadulterated crap. :D
Dana shows every week just how naive and desperate she is. Last week she had her first beer, now she's getting a tatoo (loved the "My Little Pony" jab). Poor thing needs to head on back to Kansas and sing to her church.
Zayara needs to be shot down with a tranquilizer gun before she hurts herself or somebody else. Then again, i would rather watch her make a huge ass out of herself than listen to the screeching that was coming out of Jill's mouth last night.
I enjoyed Ryan and Storm's sets as well as Dilana. I wasn't so sure about Magni but I welled up a bit when they discussed him missing his son's first steps.
lpatrick - August 3, 2006 01:19 AM (GMT)
Don't get jealous when we get new members that are smart, funnygirl. We like being philosophical about our rock music. B)
Urbangirl - August 3, 2006 03:49 AM (GMT)
After last nights show (The Performance show) I have decided that there are only 4 people that I would actually to pay money to go and see front this band - Dilana, Storm, Magni and out Aussie boy Toby
Those that you would have to pay me to see or get me rolling drink and tell me it was Karoke night at the pub, would be Zayra, Jill and Lukas.
Gilby pointed out that Zayra really is only there for them to see what she is going to wear on stage next. (Last nights outfit reminded me of something that my mother wore in the 70's and I had bad flashbacks of my childhood all night). She will stay a while longer for pure entertainment value and mud wrestling partner for Tommy. ( I would rather watch Tommy & Dave go at it in the mud pool myself :D )
Now Jill - she just ruined a great Simple Minds song last night and she YELLS, not screams, but YELLS her songs. FOB was right in suggesting we mute her and just watch her visuals.
Lukas - he is just up himself and arrogant. With him you need to just change channels for 2 minutes or take a pee break.

Too true, FG, and wonderfully so! Love your curmudgeonly approach to summer filler entertainment! You've got a fine knack of saying in a short sentence what takes me a paragraph to even introduce... cheers!
I'll add a short thought here: that any reality show does proffer up socio-analytical possibilities, and that, perhaps, for some viewers, is a side benefit to watching what was clearly designed by the show producers (and the Master Mark Burnett in this case!) to be nothing more than a pasttime, in my view. [See, I'm already not as succinct and pithy as you, FG!] Hope my comments are construed as I originally intended: as merely my observations of the actions and inherent feelings of these folks, and not an attempt to psychoanalyze --- tempting that that is on occasion, though, and perhaps I succumb to it from time to time.
Loved the comment. Now I know I can trust you to kindly tell me when I have chocolate cake on my face before my big meeting. And it's a most welcome gesture.
And about Zayra and the tranq gun? --- what if I were to miss slightly, and she contorted all the more? Now, that would be inhumane --- to one and all! Bring on the costume changes and double-stick tape, because I think she's with us for 6 or 7 more...

Agreeing with you wholeheartedly, urbangirl, and still trying to handle even the visuals, FOB. And sadly, her Jeff Buckley tribute last evening was somewhat the best of the three B3 performers. She lives to torture her soul and her audience for one more week. I'm very saddened about that for her.

Excellent! Even her treble clef was a little thin and wimpy, I thought! Camp is over for young Dilana-Dana. Shouldn't cut class, junior.
beforeiforget - August 3, 2006 03:25 PM (GMT)
Correction to my post above: Buckley's tribute was barely palatable as delivered by Patrice, of course --- apologies to Jilly, who actually did slightly better justice to the Heart tune. Neither artist will be found on my shelves at home, ever.
funnygirl - August 3, 2006 04:36 PM (GMT)
It was an obvious move for Jill to save her sorry butt by resorting to a Heart tune after finding out that the old man she gave cooties to last week by grinding all over him used to play for them.
Patrice needs to get over herself and realize that America does not agree with her overly high opinion of herself. Humility is a hard thing to learn and practice, especially on national television.
beforeiforget, I need to apologize if I came off harsh to you. I have a tendancy to be a bit hard with my comments. They are not intended toward you or any other poster on our boards it's just a reflection of my frustration for some of these shows. This show was so incredibly entertaining for me last summer. I still get all giggly when I see Ty Taylor doing red carpet interviews for Reality Remix and we get glimpses of such wonderfully talented entertainers as Mig, Marty and JD. funnygirl starts humming "Memories" the Streisand version
This season is missing that hard core constructive criticism and realistic quality of showing they really care about who is fronting this band. It's so blatantly obvious they have their top 2 and they are just trying to produce "good television". Too hard, for my liking.
Somebody needed to tell Ms. Dana that after watching her performance last night on the playback it was quite evident she was off-key for 3/4 of that song and she looked as if she was playing at her high school talent competition. Then kick her to the curb. :laugh
beforeiforget - August 3, 2006 09:13 PM (GMT)
To: funnygirl --- oh, my --- a resounding NO NEED on the apologies, please. Shoot, I'm loving the very tone of your posts! Perhaps I'm the offender, being the rookie here? Tell you what: I'm willing to walk on all those paths without the eggshells with you and the others too, because this heat wave is too hard on the feet as it is! Cheers to an unapologetic future, because I'm enjoying this trek a lot. [ASIDE: Ty, MiG, SuZie, Tara and Deanna are performing this weekend near my home; we'll see how nostalgic I get over the holiday weekend!]

FO&B: How did I miss this beauty! And hadn't you already referred to Ryan as The Phoenix? --- perfect! A temporary resurrection, perhaps, because I think he's still a little charred for my palate.
FatOld&Bald - August 3, 2006 10:21 PM (GMT)
Come now, BIF. You are one of the ones I depend on. Reread. Dilana's my bleeding phoenix. Ryan's more of a not quite fully converted zombie. The encore just wasn't the same. He may need to feel true, intense emotion to perform, but in that case, it really isn't "performance." It's more a moment of soul-baring. Maybe he needs to hurt to deliver. I myself am a hoot to be around when in pain so I can empathize with that.
Psychoanalysis huh? Freud was a poopie-head. I think Jung is closer to the mark in general.
Enjoyed your posts. Write and rock on. :wacko
dfleminator - August 3, 2006 10:31 PM (GMT)
Freud was not only a poopie-head, but a pot-head. Just sayin'
FatOld&Bald - August 3, 2006 10:36 PM (GMT)
and he had the hots for his momma.....
dang, off-topic now...um......maybe if there had been some decent rock back then...no, that's not gonna fly....but drumming in the orchestra or caressing a cello may have helped....uh, maybe...
dfleminator - August 3, 2006 10:40 PM (GMT)
Freud was a big Nirvana fan back in the day... or so I heard.
Yeah... that's the ticket!
FatOld&Bald - August 3, 2006 11:01 PM (GMT)
Yeah well, he shouldda kept Kurt boy from playing with firearms, though counteracting the combined effects of the depression, chronic ulcer pain and Courtney may have been impossible.
sigh...he was a keeper though. Wish he was still here. Kurt, not Freud.
beforeiforget - August 4, 2006 03:18 PM (GMT)
To FO&B --- begging your pardon for my mis-reference concerning The Phoenix. I really do try to pay attention; I'm offering no quarter. That it originally was assigned to Dilana stretches credulity, though --- was she ever in the ashes in your view? or has she just continued to rise week over week? If I could relocate the dang reference, I probably would not look so inept. I'll watch for your reiteration about that in future posts in other topics, perhaps.
So, if Ryan is not The Phoenix to you (I think the moniker still fits him), then I'll acquiesce slightly and picture his personal "Phoenix" as a burnt-out Mid-town flophouse --- and there can't be many of those that haven't been rehabbed.
funnygirl - August 4, 2006 03:39 PM (GMT)
You guys are making me dizzy. :wacko
As for you dear dflem, it takes one to know one. :smug
dfleminator - August 4, 2006 04:56 PM (GMT)
Nah... Nirvana was before my time ;)
FatOld&Bald - August 4, 2006 05:49 PM (GMT)
Ok, this is an old thread. Know what that means to me? carte blanche
BIF, no worries. One of my many annoying habits is to assign roles/names to people according to one of their salient characteristics, salient to me anyway. That's why I prefer Jung. He likes archetypes too.
Dilana has survived abject poverty in her childhood. That to me was her first departure from the ashes. During the last 'clinic', she cracked during her self-assessment of Time After Time. I loved the performance. SN loved the perfromance. Heck everyone loved the performance, yet she thought she had failed; that it was her worst performance. She didn't unleash major waterworks, though she did wipe a tear. To me her pain was apparent. I don't know its source.
It's a good thing to have high standards, especially for one's self, but the moment couldn't have seemed more wrong to me. It wasn't really about the song. It was something else. What it was though I cannot say.
My crazed brain applies the title of phoenix to any that bleed and yet continue on. For me fires, ashes and death aren't neccessary for the appellation. In a broad sense, perhaps it applies to us all. Things go wrong. Things go boom and yet most people continue on.
She is stronger than most, more talented than most, more mature than most, yet what she bears seems to me to be heavier than most. Perhaps all of that balances out in her. Perhaps that balance is present in all of us and so makes us all equal.
My crazed brain rambles on.....ashes call to mind dust and dust calls to mind a book, Out of the Dust, by Karen Hesse. If you've any young ones at home, say 7th grade and on, they may like it. It's primarily for for a young audience, but I've found much to value in it. Another phoenix is involved, though perhaps only a few besides myself may see things that way.
beforeiforget - August 4, 2006 08:50 PM (GMT)
And Karen Hesse calls to mind Hermann Hesse, an author who knows a thing or two about the phoenix as you describe here... Siddhartha remains one of my all-time favourites, and I'm still an aspiring Ferryman. Sounds like you may be as well (or perhaps may have attained that objective).
This is very interesting, and I'll have a look for the volume you recommend here. Much appreciated.
So --- Dilana the phoenix, she is. No matter the heights she soars to, a Phoenix she'll likely remain. Cheers.
squeaza - August 5, 2006 06:00 AM (GMT)
Hello all I'm new around here :)
Have very much enjoyed reading all your posts on this show!
I know zilch about rock music, but I'm a classical musician who can appreciate well-written songs and good performances. (I think :D)
Love the analagy to the Phoenix for Dilana - I think she is amazing and me and my hubby are in awe of her.
I want Jill out :S she can sing when se\he wants to but not my style at all.
I think Dana has the most awesome voice but would be better suited to some serious Ella Fitzgeraldesque scat-singing or heavy-duty big band stuff.
I do agree with SN that Patrice was rather swallowed up with Tommy's performance, but didn't anyone else find how he tried to steal the show a bit :? I think part of being a fantastic musician is the reaction between the different performers, and for one to totally do his own thing regardless of anyone else... hmmm. I know it's rock and it's Tommy Lee, but still..
FatOld&Bald - August 5, 2006 12:01 PM (GMT)
Howdy and welcome. Glad you found the site and hope you stay and talk about Rockstar (and any other shows you like) with us.
What instrument do you play?
squeaza - August 6, 2006 12:58 PM (GMT)
I play the piano :) and way too much for my liking at the moment.... could do with a holiday :) Goign over to do some concerts at the Edinburgh fringe festival in a few days (yay) which is why I'm procrastinating on a forum rather than practising
I'd love to chat about other shows, but I'm in Aus and we don't get much stuff broadcast simultaneously here. They tried to do the last season of the Amazing race at the same time as US so that people here didn't accidentally find out the results, but one week of our networks deciding a rugby league match was more important (pffff) and we were behind again.
At least Rockstar has to be live because of the voting, but because of the time differences we get the elimination show about 18 hours after it happens, so I've got to be careful about looking on the internet.
FatOld&Bald - August 6, 2006 04:15 PM (GMT)
lol about the rugby broadcast
Playing professionally must be quite challenging. Are there days/moments when you still find joy in it? I hope so.

Welcome to Art Squeaza - you will love it here. I know exactly how you feel about the delays.
I too try to stay off the net on Thur before the elimination show is shown.
Cheers & welcome again!!

all the time :D Thankfully - otherwise I'd give up in a flash and get a job that pays properly lol. It is a mixture of good and bad work - today I played for 7 auditions for Double Bass players for the symphony orchestra here. There hasn't been a job available in the orchestra for a bass for 21 years!! So some really good people turned up from all corners of the globe. Good $ but not inspiring. Edinburgh is really bad $ but fantastic, so if you have a mix it all evens out :)
I am very thankful that I can make a living from playing - I well know there are very few musos who can. My husband is a fantastic viola player but all his income is coming from teaching.
Urbangirl - do you know how many people are following Rockstar down here in Oz?? I'm a member of another forum and there seem to be a lot of people watching it, but I don't know how many people have fox.
