Title: ART Talk - Rock Star Supernova 7/26
Bored - July 26, 2006 11:15 PM (GMT)
Discuss tonight's elimination show right here. Thanks!
dfleminator - July 27, 2006 01:58 AM (GMT)
So I've decided that there's really not enough substance to these shows to warrant a full recap, so from now on, Wednesday recaps will be mini-recaps inside the ART Talk thread. So here goes:
Tommy gives Storm an A+ for her dive, Dave and Patrice work out their differences from last night's show, while Gilby challenges Zayra to bring the rock, and drop the pop. Zayra gives a stupid musical philosophic answer that impresses the band, but not me (they've done their share of drugs in their time, which is why I'm sure they're so easily impressed by stupid arguments). Jason asks Phil what they should do about him, and Phil makes up the excuse that two thirds of the songs from song selection aren't decent rock songs. Dave points out that both Dana and Dilana rocked out really well last night to some not-so-rock songs.
We get to see some footage from the house, and Jill bitches about Gilby not liking her grinding, saying that he's just not used to a woman band member. Gilby takes exception to this, since he played in Heart with two other women, and they never humped his leg like an excited puppy. It's now that Jill makes the biggest mistake of the competition thus far (possibly next to the guy who chose to sing Duran Duran)... Jill tells the band that "everything's already been done in rock and roll" BUZZ! Wrong answer Jill. No Rock Star for you! NEXT!
Dana seems enthusiastic about her improvement, and starts off by thanking people in the house for helping her get to this point. Dilana points out that Dana is at a distinct disadvantage, because while Dana is learning how to be a rock chick, all the others (or many of the others) are already rockers, with no training required. Dana says she's not going to listen to anyone anymore.
Storm performs "Anything Anything" again as the encore performance (I'm disappointed it wasn't Dilana, but whatever. She does an excellent job with her song, and now it's time to reveal the bottom three after the first few minutes of voting.
You will recall that the bottom three was made up Jill, Josh, and Zayra when we left. Also in the bottom three at some point in the night were Phil and Patrice.
Patrice is the first competitor in the bottom three to perform, and she chooses to perform "My Iron Lung" by Radiohead. I found it much more entertaining than last week, but the question is, is it good enough?
No surprise here, Zayra's back in the bottom three, and she sings "I'm Not An Addict" by K's Choice. I have to say that for the first time ever, I found her voice enchantingly beautiful. Don't get me wrong, this isn't her gig at all. She does not belong on the same stage as Supernova, but she does have a unique style. Will she stick around?
Phil is the final member of the bottom three, causing Josh and Jill to feel safe once again. Phil sings "Smoking Umbrellas" by Failure, and I'm not too impressed, and he still gives me the heebie-jeebies. I would be happy if either Zayra or Phil went home. Who will it be?
Supernova discusses and they decide to send Patrice back to her seat, and Phil back to his house. Ultimately, the band didn't feel like he was committed to being a member of their band. Phil keeps talking about how he really DID want to win this thing, and the band members keep pointing out that he's not saying he wants to be in their band, he's just saying that he wants to WIN.
And here ends the mini-cap!
lpatrick - July 27, 2006 02:24 AM (GMT)
Thanks for the mini-cap.
I'm glad Patrice was in the bottom three. I think she's very talented and has a good voice, but she's going to have to bring more in her performance.
I don't know why they don't call the encore: "Here's Dilana again." And let us have a chance to hear her again. Today I was walking around, all singing "Time after Time." Her voice just leaves an impression on me. And I like the way she sings. She commands your attention.
FatOld&Bald - July 27, 2006 02:46 AM (GMT)
I've always loved that song in all it's versions. Dilana's performance was the best.
I wish she could have sung it again. She really should get the encore each week as you've suggested, but it would have effects both on the morale of the other performers and on voting.
Urbangirl - July 27, 2006 03:32 AM (GMT)
I can't wait to watch this tonight, even though I know who is leaving.
I am surprised that Zayra is still there, but Jason has a thing for her and the more she wears tight outfits the longer she is going to to stay. Plus who would we all have to complain about if she left too soon?? :D I have to say though that the Chipmunks (remember Alvin and the gang??) did a MUCH better version of Call Me than she did last night. I could hear the dogs in the neighbourhood howling for hours after she sang.

Me too lpatrick!! Being an 80's girl myself I have always loved Cyndi Lauper, but Dilana was wonderful.
With Patrice, Mr Urbangirl and I have decided that she might just be a missing member of the Partridge family. Perhaps she could sing "Come on get Happy" the same week that Zayra sings "Everything's Free in America" from Westside story. :O
I owe Mr Urbangirl $10 as I thought that Lukas would get the encore.
FatOld&Bald - July 27, 2006 04:04 AM (GMT)
Dilana could make anything work, including Come On Get Happy.
Lukas is quite talented. He understands the art of performance and has a good sense of how songs should progress and flow. I hope I'm wrong, but I can see him self-destructing, if not on the show, then in a few years time.
MR CROWLEY - July 27, 2006 04:37 AM (GMT)
New here. Actually new at any discussion group, but I really love the show. I feel that that group has a good idea of who they're going to pick as a lead vocalist and their elimination choices are bent towards controversy and good ratings. I'm fine with it ... entertains me.
Any one else think that Zara@#$## (whatever) has been playing the male hopefuls. Often see her very close and cuddly on the reality galleries. Might be wrong
Urbangirl - July 27, 2006 05:36 AM (GMT)
Hi there Mr Crowley...Welcome to ART.
I too am sure that the lads have already made their pick. My money is on Dilana or the yummy little Aussie Toby.
FatOld&Bald - July 27, 2006 06:04 AM (GMT)
They probably do have their first and second choices locked and you're right, some of the eliminations are made and some reprieves given to make for more entertaining shows.
As for being cuddly at the manison, everyone develops patterns of responses for dealing with people and they use them as long as they seem to work. Zarya may string them along a bit and say "baby" a lot. Toby, Magni and Storm seem to take a very mature approach. Lukas plays with people's heads. Jill gets in your face. Come to think of it Patrice does too.
Dilana.....heck, she's just a goddess.....sigh....
The other ones kinda take up space.

Dflem and I had this conversation and we both thought the same thing. We even kicked around the idea of her just singing "Happy Birthday." :D
I agree, that they probably know who they want. The rest is to entertain us.
Welcome to ART MR CROWLEY. We hope you stick around and discuss the show and its players with us.
FatOld&Bald - July 27, 2006 07:21 PM (GMT)
NOOOOOO!!!!! Must stop....now I'm thinking about her singing "Happy Birthday Mr. President" ala Marilyn Monroe which I have always detested, but she could make it much more than work.....
bah....must concentrate, focus.....I need ice cream.
beforeiforget - July 27, 2006 08:00 PM (GMT)
When Phil was eliminated, the SN folks said it was because he did not show a commitment to being part of the band, just to winning. Comments made on another site report that, during the taping of the elimination show and in a segment that was edited from the broadcast version, Dave Navarro asks Phil if he gets the newspaper up at the mansion. When he replies, no, Dave tells him that HE gets the paper, and proceeds to call Phil out on the content of an interview he gave to the press, published on July 7.
It appears Phil confesses that he indeed was only seeking exposure for his own fine band, that he hates playing covers and that he is "not stoked about the music Supernova's popping out." Game set match.
Poor pitiful Phil. PitiPhil, perhaps. Just count him among those who were destined to be gone in the next 5-6 weeks anyway. I don't think the order of departure actually matters --- except apparently to Phil, who will now miss out on ~ 3 weeks of free ad time for his band and his mates.
And what now for Jill? How uncomfortable a week will this be for her, having learned that SN considers her a cheap, back-talking screamer not at all roit for them. Unlike Poor Phil who did manage to coattail to safety on the strength of Jason's popularity the week prior, Jill could not even achieve that lowly level --- and indeed damaged her miserable self to such an extent as to seal her fate next week.
Bottom line: at least two regular performances and a possible two B3 tunes coming up for Zayra --- and that's about as many costume changes as this author can handle!
FatOld&Bald - July 27, 2006 08:07 PM (GMT)
Jill damaged and miserable???
YOU'RE AWESOME!!! Right more!
Two more costume changes for Zarya...LOL. You gotta drop by more often. I enjoyed that post.
beforeiforget - July 27, 2006 08:25 PM (GMT)
You're too good to me, FO&B; with thanks for your kind words. I've enjoyed your posts as well, and I note that we registered on this site within days of one another. Given that you have held forth to a much greater degree than myself, I must infer that I work harder at my day job than do you!
Hope we might still date after it's revealed that Dana is Tommy's daughter and Dilana is a man... Cheers to the daytime RS soap!
FatOld&Bald - July 27, 2006 08:41 PM (GMT)
Ok, I re-read that three times. :oooo
Yes, you do work harder at your day job. Everyone does. I'm off for ther summer and doing my very best to do as little as possible. While other folks are working or taking care of their kids, I'm watching cooking shows and jumping on ART posts.
It so happens that a show on goat cheese can only hold my interest for just so long. Now don't get me wrong, goat cheese ain't bad, but an entire half hour???
Dilana really a man? Wouldn't matter to me. I just like watching and listening to her. She is simply a cool person.
Dana really Tommy's daughter? The mind simply boggles at how far and wide a sower may have sown. I wouldn't be surprised. It would be kinda funny if she became a goth chick after all this and/or joined a cult.
Ok, Now who else wants to hop on the Jill is a Psycho bandwagon? Beforeiforget is drivin' and I've got shotgun.
beforeiforget - July 27, 2006 09:04 PM (GMT)
Of course! I should have known to be envious of your summer status, FO&B. Green. Very green.
As green as the residue from Jill's pending exit down the Psycho Drain. Beware to all at the mansion.

I know you all have been waiting patiently for me to weigh in with my big fat opinion of last night's show.
First things first, welcome to ART beforeiforget. Thanks for the tidbit of gossip from "another site". However, can you back it up? Has anybody else read this newsclipping or posted it? I'm sure if it's true, it's out there somewhere. It helps to explain the look of udder incredulity on the faces of the rockers last night.
Kennedy did an interview with Ty Taylor () from last year's show and he said the suckiest of them all last night was Zayara, but they were going to keep her around because of the controversey she caused. I don't think they are going to be able to do that much longer though.
It's amazing that they roast Jill for grinding and using sexuality as a gimmick, but they find the utterly talentless Zayara to be cute in her dominatrix Smurf outfit. :rolleyes Shoot...now I'm falling into the controversey.
MR CROWLEY - July 28, 2006 04:55 AM (GMT)
Just saw the elimination show. Had to watch it online at work, because I was working wednesday. I could not believe how pretty Zayra's voice was. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather be stuck in traffic on a first grade field trip than listen to her attempt to rock again, I think she should forget about Supernova and just use this reprieve to showcase her own talents.
Dilana has to be the one, I go back repeatedly and listen to her sing.
I'd pay big to see her in concert with the boys. I agree with whoever said, Lucas looks like he could spiral out of contol rapidly

Thanks for the welcome. Here's the site, funnygirl. I was not at the elimination show and cannot give first-hand testimony. I'm not sure I even know how to post the reference site here, given my noviate status in all things web and blog, but I'm certainly going to try when I finish this text. If I am unsuccessful, then here is the character transcript of where the quote is to be found:
http://www.delmarvanow.com/apps/pbcs.dll/a.../607070304/1024Here are the verbatim sections from that account that are attributed to Phil Ritchie as published on July 7, 2006:
"
It's definitely weird from playing my original music for years. We played covers back in the day but we've been strictly original for four years now," Ritchie said. "I hate playing covers, but this whole show is mostly covers. I've done it for years though, and I'm not worried about it."
"I mean, really I just hope to gain exposure. I love my band and I love the music," he said. "I'm not stoked about the music Supernova's popping out."
"I may have taken a risk. I love my boys back home, but you know I still have to look out for myself in this world," he said. "I've got to create opportunities for myself, and this is too huge an opportunity to say no to."
"I've heard a lot of peoples' music and everybody here is unbelievably talented," he said. "I can't believe I'm one of these people. The odds of me being here are incredibly slim."
"I just want them to see who I really am, I'm not trying to fit any mold that I'm not," he said. "I'm just trying to be who I am and do what I do and hopefully people will enjoy it." It is indeed possible that this article from the Daily Times in Maryland is a bogus group, which it could well be from my limited hands-on, non-ink-stained experience, then totally mea culpa. I'm glad that you are doing your due diligence, and truly glad that your mind may be more enquiring than mine in this case, so this attachment is the best I can do. Would love to know whether it holds any credence, or whether you think it should be blown to pieces.
If I am in violation of the the site rules for giving a vague reference like I did, then consider me as contributing only to conjecture and offering my opinion and I'm out with apologies all round. I may still lurk, because I was rather enjoying this site. [I hereafter may look twice at each watch fob, for the pure reminder of some fun I was lucky to have one afternoon last week... and I know I will not forget Dflem's good judgment to abandon a weak CIdol season (even if it had been his assigned task to hold forth!) Cheers to you both.
The bigger opinion/blogger site from which this Phil Ritchie article came to my attention is televisionwithoutpity.com, and I am not even familiar with your ART site rules enough to know whether I can mention that other site here. I've likely erected two pitards for my poor self now. Twice blessed; twice stabbed.
Thanks for the short and sweet experience with you. I did have a nice time at your party. Would you please call me a taxi?
FatOld&Bald - July 31, 2006 03:32 PM (GMT)
????
No taxi for you. You're staying.
I've probably transgressed in much greater fashion or at the very least more often and the Hand of God has yet to fall on me......so I'm thinkin', you're safe at least untill I get whacked.
So stay already. Sheesh, who's gonna help me drive the Jill's a freakin' psycho bandwagon?
beforeiforget - July 31, 2006 05:32 PM (GMT)
My oh my. While I invariably do not linger after having bid goodnight to my hosts, being typically one of some conviction( if not of some judgment), nonetheless a very fine and kindly partygoer has given me pause, having reminded me of the following:
Wassa madda with me? What is "real", anyway, dude? Lighten up, coz the season is short! Dig the day! Dig the day three times a week, and bury oneself, if one must, during one of the outstanding four; or, much preferred, in the off-season!
And the above-noted good pal, while admittedly rather longwinded yet so very wonderfully considerate, handsome and descriptive, is also so very correct. [Those may not have been his exact words, but shoot, I've already immortalized him.]
Only a few thousand folks are fortunate enough to be at the elim show each week, and those in attendance last week would have heard Dave N and Phil talk on this subject for 15 mins+.
Speaking for my own constitutional limits, I'm a lot better off assuming the newspaper article they both implicitly agreed to debate was bona fide than I am to try to check out the credentials of said source. Source be damned! Footnotes ne'er to appear! I'm with it, now! And hey, funnygirl, hope you didn't find me defensive about you testing the veracity of the news --- I like what you're asking, and am always looking to seek out the truth. Sets you free, my alma mater proclaims.
And, with freedom in mind: there seems to be a transit strike, and no cab in sight. Hail, no. Hail, not yet.
FatOld&Bald - July 31, 2006 05:43 PM (GMT)
Hmm.....turns shotgun to cover the street. Hey you, driving the cab, move on, we're keeping this one.
