lpatrick: It's time to rock out again dfleminator, with another Rock Star: Supernova.dfleminator: I'm ready if you are!
lpatrick: I have to comment on Brooke's shirt this week. I know she's tryin' to be a rocker chick, but the gold lame skirt needs to go back to the 80's.dfleminator: Yes, that skirt was definitely very strange. I wonder if she lost the other part of her outfit somewhere backstage?
lpatrick: I think it's great that the members of Supernova are picking a contestant to perform with each week. I loved hearing Jason last week on bass. Now we find out that Gilby is going to play lead guitar during a perfomance.dfleminator: I'm looking forward to Gilby performing. I assume that means next week, that means we'll see some drum action from Tommy Lee. I'll be looking forward to that performance, but most of all, I can't wait to see these contestants perform with the whole band.
lpatrick:So what did you think of Supernova finally telling the contestants what they want?? I was glad to see them go to the house and actually let them listen to some new tracks. These guys, Tommy, Gilby, and Jason all have a musically heavier sounding history and the tracks had a more catchy feel. I think most of the contestants have been confused about what the band wanted from them. The sound is more rock, than metal. Gilby told them no more excuses and I love it. dfleminator: I like their sound, and I think that it's great that the contestants are finally getting a feel for it. It's not what I expected at all, but I have to agree that it is great.
lpatrick: It's time for the performance and it's getting exciting around here dflem. Up first in Lukas performing "Bittersweet Symphony" by The Verve. I know in the past we've both like the guy. He sounded a little croaky to me tonight and I have to agree with Jason that he needs to open his throat up more and sing out. Now when he kicked it in gear, he was better. Dave agreed with me on that point. :) dfleminator: I suddenly have this longing to buy expensive running shoes. This song is one of those songs that I just wish would never be played again EVER. And yet, Lukas does a pretty darn good job of it. I'm impressed, particularly when he did kick it into gear.
lpatrick: Zayra performs "Call Me," by Blondie. I'll have to tell you dflem, was I was little Blondie was one of my favorites and "Call Me" is a classic. Before we get to her performance... what about that outfit?dfleminator: That blue spandex getup was... interesting to say the least. She looked out of place in this millenium, but if she's looking to be the biggest Rock Star of 3006 on the planet Zerpah, I'm sure this outfit would be her ticket to the bigtime.
lpatrick: I think this gal yells more than she sings. She's great when she hits the high notes, but I totally agree with Dave that she should start looking into a solo career.dfleminator: you're too kind lp! I hate to say this, because I enjoy Shakira's music at times, and I think she's very talented, which is why it hurts me to make this comparison. Zayra reminds me a bit of Shakira trying (and failing) to sing hard rock. She does not need a solo career, she needs to find a
different career.
lpatrick: Dana takes on Nirvana's "About a Girl," and she's going acoustic. The guys in the band all seemed to enjoy this performance saying she finally looked "damaged enough." She laughed that she had jugged a beer before coming on stage. I, personally, think she has to try to hard.dfleminator: I have to disagree with you here, because I really enjoyed this performance by Dana, and I thought she did excellent rocking it out in the end. While I don't think she's a good fit for the band, I would like to see the new Dana for a few more weeks before they cut her loose.
lpatrick: Patrice performs "Remedy" by the Black Crows (another lpatrick favorite). I think she has a great voice, but I was totally bored with her performance. She did not rock this song the way it should have been done. Dave totally agreed with me about being bored and wanted her to change things up. Patrice then goes on the defensive and asks him, Dave Navarro, if he ever changes things up on stage. Dave confidently replies, "I have a job and I'm not auditioning." Love him. :D dfleminator:I completely agree with you on this. She was ok, but she was extremely boring. I hate when reality contestants get all bitchy at their judges. There's a reason you're being judged, and they're the judges. Listen to them! A little playful banter is fine, but don't call them out!
lpatrick: Toby's turn at the mike and he's going to give us a little Billy Idol, "White Wedding." This was the perfect song for him. I think he rocked it. Jason gave him a standing "O."dfleminator: I have to agree with Gilby when he said that he was worried at the beginning when Toby was using his low voice. When he kicked it up a notch, it was superb.
lpatrick: Magni performs "Heroes," by David Bowie. He's decided to play guitar. It was good, but could have been better. I think he has a good voice but there wasn't alot of energy. Tommy asked the question of why he would strap himself to a guitar during this song? Magni comments on Zayra's blue spandex suit and said he didn't want to go in that direction.dfleminator: And for that I'm glad. I don't ever want to even
imagine Magni in Zayra's spandex suit. I have to completely agree with Tommy though. There was no stage presence, because he was tied to a guitar and a microphone stand.
lpatrick: Ryan sings Live's "I Alone." This can be a very powerful song if it's done right. Ryan's got that pained look on his face again. Did you see that little smile he tried to give?? The band wondered last week if he was having any "fun." This song really shouldn't go in the direction of fun and I think Ryan did a good job with the anger and grit. Dave that it was like night and day since the first time he performed. Tommy thought it was the perfect song for his voice. I will have to agree Mr. Lee.dfleminator: It's about time! I didn't know if he would ever perform something that could actually live up to the show's title of "Rock Star". He seemed to finally be enjoying himself, even as he sang with the anger and grit. I'm going to bet that this will be the encore performance tomorrow night.
lpatrick: Jill performs the Stone's "Brown Sugar," with Gilby playing lead guitar. She's got such strong vocals, but I have to totally agree with Gilby when he said that the "grinding thing was cheap and weak." Dave, however, like it... alot. :oooo dfleminator: I have to admit... I didn't notice the grinding all that much, but I felt like Jill did perform excellently. I think she would be an amazing solo act, and I think she could do better for herself going solo than being tied to these guys.
lpatrick: Phil sings "One Headlight," by the Wallflowers. He's got that herky-jerky movement that Tommy loves and Jason can't stand. I wasn't wow'd by him. Dave wonders where the intensity was... me too Dave, me too.dfleminator: Phil gives me the heebiejeebies, that's all there is to it. He sang ok, but I'm sure that Bob Dylan's son is not impressed.
lpatrick: Dilana's up with Cyndi Lauper's "Time after Time." This gal has it all. She's just amazing. It was a great semi-acoustic performance and she rocked it. (And really, can anyone else rock a Cyndi Lauper song?) Tommy is enchanted and Dave got the chills. Her voice is just the best at this point. dfleminator: She is absolutely SUPERB. There is no denying that Dilana should win this competition. (Well, I guess there could be denying, but there
shouldn't be any denying). It was wonderful to hear her perform acoustically, and at times, her voice reminds me of Stevie Nicks. She has such amazing control. I could go on and on and on about Dilana, but I won't. Her guitar player was excellent as well.
lpatrick: Josh takes on "No Rain," by Blind Melon. This is a very catchy song but hard to sing. He did OK, just OK. He did have better energy this time. I really want to like this guy but he's going to have to crank it. The band was not very pleased and Dave thought he was back at the start.dfleminator: I miss bumble-bee girl. You know, the one that dances in the video for this song? I wanted to see her in the background, but I didn't. And for that, Josh has failed, and he will not advance any farther in this competition. Ok, not really, but I was also left feeling very uncomfortable, as I watched him try to figure out what to do in the musical interludes. He was very awkward, and looked like an amateur. Josh points out to the band that he misses the "Soul" from the music he plays. I'm not sure Josh wants this anymore, now that he's heard what the tracks are like.
lpatrick: Last but not least is Storm performing "Anything, Anything," by Dramarama. Another good song. This gal is a great singer. She's got a powerful voice. However, she gives me the creeps. I think her eyes are gonna pop out of her head and her look reminds me of Toni Ferrari. Dave and Tommy loved the stage dive she did at the end. Jason says she's turbo charged.dfleminator: Wow... Toni? That's harsh! I thought she did a great job as she body-surfed into the crowd.
lpatrick: Well, that's the show this week dfleminator. I'm still loving Dilana and Toby. As the show ended Brooke shared the bottom three with us: Josh, Jill and Zayra. Do you agree?dfleminator: Dilana was great, and Toby was pretty good as well, but I would also throw Ryan Star in there, just because he surprised me. I disagree with Jill being in the bottom three, and I would be quite surprised if she stayed in the bottom three tomorrow. I think she has some great pipes, and I can't wait to hear more from them. Zayra, of course, is a given. The bottom three should be her home. I'm not sure if Josh really wants this though, so I think he might be leaving us tomorrow. Who would I replace Jill with? Probably Phil, cause he creeps me out.
And that's the end of Rock Star for tonight. I'll be back tomorrow night for a recap of how the Wednesday night show went down. Special thanks to my always lovely Tuesday-night co-host, lpatrick!
