Title: From The Street To The Suite -- Dawn Dismissed
Description: 10/12 recap

crpsaiyan - October 13, 2005 03:47 PM (GMT)
Last week, Shawn was fired from Team Matchstick when she put herself on the chopping block, for saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. Back in the loft, Primarius is celebrating their third consecutive win out on the balcony, with very cocky attitudes to match. By the time, they all filed back into the loft, they noticed that every member of Matchstick were missing. Primarius called out for their opponents, but there was no response. Jennifer joked about every one of them quitting, while Sarah figured that all of them got canned. As Matchstick walked in moments later, Carrie is shocked to discover that Shawn, who she believed was one of the strongest teamplayers of her opposing team, was sent home. Jim discusses Shawn's critical error when she made her "fake it till you make it" speech, which is why she was sent home. He then states that nothing clear-cut. Sarah disagreed with Jim's statement, and felt that all it takes is a quality product that consumers can relate to and appreciate, as well as being proud to present it. Jim then states that Team Primarius is so smug and that he couldn't wait for the day when Primarius loses a task, and is sent into the conference room.

The next morning, both teams received their fourth task -- turn an empty two-bedroom Westin Hotel suite, and turn it into something extraordinary. A group of Westin executives and platinum members of their preferred guest program will judge them. The team that creates the best looking suite as judged by the executives and platinum members wins. Because Matchstick had lost 3 consecutive times, Charles and Alexis turned to the members of Primarius, and asked each of them who would be an essential leader for the other team. Each member of Primarius hesitated, but then, Leslie's hand went up. Charles then asked Leslie to move from Primarius to Matchstick. Charles and Alexis then gave Team Matchstick words of inspiration to succeed in their next task, before all the candidates were dismissed. Leslie automatically became the project manager for Matchstick, and felt that she was capable of leading them to victory.

At Primarius, Amanda couldn't understand why Leslie stepped up to the plate to become the project manager for Matchstick, however her entire team felt that Leslie was not one of their strongest players, and that her leaving wouldn't hurt Primarius at all. The team immediately went to the Westin Hotel to get to work on their task. When they arrived, they realized that because the suite was completely bare, that they would be unable to decorate and furnish it within a short period of time. Amanda then decided to become Primarius' Project Manager because she felt that she was ready to lead the group after being a good teamplayer for the previous tasks. Primarius began brainstorming their vision to create their suite, and decided on creating a concept of Westin Entertains. Carrie suggests her idea of the type of color to be used for the room. However, Amanda feels that it would be best for a professional to help them choose a color.

Meanwhile, Leslie felt that Matchstick's losing streak was due to poor organizational planning, but felt confident enough for the team to win if they can organize themselves better. Leslie decided to have a two-hour brainstorming session. Dawn felt that although Leslie wanted to have a firm plan and vision before the team did anything, she was wasting too much time brainstorming for ideas. Jim was less than pleased with Leslie after the team debated about what would or would not work for their vision.

Back at Primarius, Amanda wanted to combine the bar and the kitchenette in their suite. Ryan found an interior decorator to pick out some wallpaper and paint color. Amanda told the decorator that their suite's vision is an entertainment space, and was given wallpaper samples, as suggested by the decorator. Carrie then pulls out a few samples that she liked for their suite, but Amanda didn't think any of them would go with their theme, and continued to listen to the advice of the decorator. In an interview, she stated that because the decorator was the expert, she had to go with her advice. As an afterthought, Amanda said that if it's a wrong decision, she would have to live with it; she decided to go with the gray. Amanda asked Ryan for his opinion, and it wasn't at all what he envisioned for the suite. Ryan didn't like the direction the task was going, but on the other hand, he felt that he should never overestimate his opponents. He felt that even if his team comes up with a bad concept, Matchstick is most likely going to come up with something worse.

At Matchstick, Leslie and her team are still brainstorming for ideas, while the clock is ticking. Dawn felt that they could've at least had essentials taken care of, and that ordered weren't placed for their suite vision. As the discussion went on, David stated that they had a contracting team of 8 people to help with painting and plumbing. However, not one of them could get any work done, due to Matchstick's inconsistency to form a plan. The discussion continues, until Jim comes up with a concept -- F.L.O.W. (For Leisure Or Work). Leslie described F.L.O.W. as a concept of balancing work and life. In other words, have everything at your fingertips, but also some fun things to inspire people and help them relax when they spend time in their room. Dawn was upset over the fact that their two-hour session was turned into six hours; she felt that it was poor time management.

Meanwhile, Project Manager Amanda hired contractors to help Primarius with painting, plumbing, and electrical work. Three rooms were painted, and wallpaper was added onto the bathroom walls. Amanda was so convinced that the gray wallpaper would look great with the tile. When she asked Howie for his opinion, he groaned in disgust. He thought the wallpaper looked like Atlantic City on crack. The other teammates agreed that the gray wasn't very appealing for the bathroom. In an interview, Jennifer stated that Amanda chose the prison gray wallpaper color, and said that Amanda will be blamed should their team lose the task. Then Amanda decides to round up her team for another brainstorming session to remind them that their suite's theme is entertainment, and that paint and wallpaper isn't a big picture.

Back at Matchstick, Bethenny expressed her anger, all on account of her not being able to get her shopping out of the way for her team's suite vision. She felt that the time management was poor on Leslie's part. Because she and her team arrived at Crate & Barrel at 9:00 pm, she had only 4 minutes to purchase all of the major pieces of furniture for their suite. Leslie described Bethenny as going in a 900 mph, but managed to purchase all of the furniture within 8 minutes. While Bethenny and Marcela went back to the hotel, Jim, David, Dawn, and Leslie went to the hardware store to purchase their items. Leslie receives a call from Marcela stating that the only way their going to get the rooms done is by painting the walls that very night, before the judges come to the suite the next morning. After getting off the phone with Marcela, Dawn debates about the work that needs to be done, saying that it's not necessary. In an interview, Dawn stated that there was no way she was going to stay up all night painting the rooms with her team; she thought it was ridiculous. At 2:15 am, Jim, David, Marcela, and the rest of the team are painting away, while Dawn sits out. Leslie states that the work has to get done, and that there is no room for throwing in the towel, or calling it night. With that said, she felt that Dawn was confrontational, not to mention the laziest person in the loft.

The next morning, 5:00 am to be exact, the members of Matchstick are up. The plan was to be ready to leave the loft at 6:30 am. The team is ready to go... except Dawn, who is sound asleep. David goes to her bed and starts shaking her, but she doesn't get up. He continues to shake her and pulls her covers off from her, only to have her pull the covers back on. Leslie is irritated over the fact that Dawn couldn't wake up at the precise time expected, and felt that she was useless. Dawn explains why she didn't wake up to Marcela, but she wasn't interested. Marcela ordered Dawn to move. They arrived back at their suite, to complete the work. The lighting was in, so was the plumbing, the hardwood floors, and the beds.

Back at the loft, Primarius was preparing to leave, when Amanda had everyone gather around. She basically described her team as having the sharpest people that she had known. With that said, she gave each of her teammates sharpened pencils with a little note that had words of wisdom. Amanda reminded her team that there was no room for stress. In an interview, Ryan stated that for some odd reason, the pencils worked, and the team started feeling better. They went to their suite to decorate it, with not only their furniture, but their entertainment trinkets -- a vase full of poker chips, and a bookshelf full of games and candy for starters. As Sarah was filling up the glass vase with dominoes, Alexis and Charles arrived to check Primarius' progress. Charles felt that they had a solid concept, and that it would be appealing to travelers coming to New York. Then Howie ecstatically decided to show Charles and Alexis the popcorn machine in the corner; they were both impressed. With nothing further to see, Charles and Alexis left.

Charles and Alexis arrived at Matchstick's suite to check on the team's progress. Amanda showed them all of the décor, but then Charles asked if there was a place to sit down. Bethenny stated that the couch and the table would be delivered shortly and they should have everything set. With that note, Charles and Alexis left, while Matchstick continued to work. Two hours remained before the executives showed up, and everyone rushed to make sure the place was presentable. However, Matchstick ran into a problem. Bethenny was on the phone in a very demanding tone, wondering what happened to the furniture. The movers were still at the furniture depot, attempting to obtain it, but there was nothing. Bethenny demanded to have the furniture delivered within 45 minutes. In an interview, Leslie stated that the most critical element of the day was the furniture. Unfortunately, Matchstick had fifteen minutes before the judges arrive, and yet they were still without furniture. Bethenny called the movers again, and they told her that they should be at the location in seven minutes. Matchstick immediately raced down to the loading dock... only to discover that there was no truck, and no furniture.

The Westin Executives arrived, to judge Primarius' suite. Amanda felt that this presentation was one of the most important things she had done so far in the entire job interview process. Amanda presented the room as Westin Entertains, and she did that by pointing out the poker chips, the candy on the bookshelves, as well as other games throughout the entire suite. She also presented the contemporary bar, as well as a seating area, and kitchenette to provide for families and businesspeople. Last but not least is the media center with surround sound, and a popcorn machine in the corner.

Unfortunately for Matchstick, their furniture never arrived. Bethenny had wondered if their team had a chance, and in one smug answer, Jim said, "no couchie, no winnie." The Westin Executives arrived, and were greeted by Leslie. Leslie was upset over the fact that there was no couch in their suite, and felt like she was selling air. She described her team's F.L.O.W. concept to the executives, and pretty much embellished her team's creation by saying that they created something simple, yet hidden. One of the executives joked about their concept being like his first apartment, where no one could afford the furniture. His collegues then broke into laughter; Leslie was not impressed.

In the end, both teams met Martha Stewart and the executives in the Westin's main boardroom. The executives decided to critique Primarius' suite first. They said that their theme was entertainment, and when you walked into the suite, you got the concept very quickly. As for Matchstick, they had a great use of the wooden floors, and how they embellished their way of openness. When Martha asked them where the couches are, the executives stated that all they had was the wooden floor. Martha felt that the room was not completed, and didn't understand their theme. The executives felt that Primarius was definitely "movin' on up" with their concept. Martha noticed how exhausted they were, and gave them the opportunity to relax in their newly created Westin Entertains suite. Unfortunately for Matchstick, the only furniture they would be seeing, are the seats in the conference room.

With a fourth consecutive win, Team Primarius celebrated victoriously. Moments later, Martha visited Team Primarius in their suite, where seemed most impressed by the candy in the bookshelf, but was most impressed with the view that overlooked New Jersey. In an interview, Amanda stated, "one of the reasons we're here is because we admire and respect Martha Stewart, and we want to learn from her."

Back in the loft, Dawn mentioned that she had been in the conference room three times already, and was no doubt expecting to be brought in the fourth time. She felt that Leslie would blame her for everything that went wrong. She described Leslie as being completely incompetent, a poor decision maker, and a jackass. Leslie discussed her conference room strategy to Bethenny about having her and Dawn brought into the conference room. Bethenny was not comfortable about Leslie putting her in the hot seat, for she would have to defend herself. In an interview, Leslie said that her team needs to lose deadweight, and felt that the biggest anchor to the team is Dawn.

In the conference room, Martha turned to Leslie and asked her who was the one who came up with the F.L.O.W. idea. Leslie stated that it was a collective idea, but stated that Jim was the one who created the acronym for F.L.O.W. Martha said that she liked the design, but felt that it was an unfinished room. She wanted to hear more from the marketing company owner from Alexandria, and Leslie said that everything was coming together in a very tight timeline, but the furniture was the issue. Martha asked who was at fault for furniture, and Leslie said that Bethenny was responsible for ordering the furniture. Bethenny is upset by Leslie's statement. Charles stated that Bethenny had told him not to worry because the furniture would be delivered, and that they would deal with the task. The natural foods chef from New York said that the furniture was on its way, but never showed up. Dawn took an opportunity to defend Bethenny by saying that she was not responsible for the delivery. Martha wanted to know why they couldn't get the furniture, and Leslie said that the furniture was on delivery. However, Bethenny went on the attack by stating that her entire team spent six hours trying to come up with a concept, and had nothing to work on during that time frame; Dawn coincided with Bethenny's comment. Leslie disagreed, and then Alexis stated that the reality of their task was that they couldn't finish on time. Martha couldn't understand why Matchstick would take so long to work on a task, when she herself, had to prepare for a garden tour and managed to have everything taken care of in only 2 hours. "You know why? You didn't have them doing it," Charles said, pointing at each member of Matchstick. Martha even said that they had other people who would help them with their suite. She turned to David and asked him what he did, and he said that he painted. He went on by saying, "the painters asked us to paint because they said that if we were going to finish, we needed to step in and paint." Dawn said that the priorities were in the wrong order, and that time was managed very poorly. Leslie disagreed, and went on the attack towards Dawn by describing her inability to perform as a teamplayer as well as her negativity. Martha asked Leslie why she didn't give Dawn a paintbrush, so she could paint like everyone else. The 36-year-old marketing company owner didn’t back down, and said that Dawn wouldn't do so. Martha is shocked by Leslie's statement, and immediately turned to Dawn. The PR Consultant from Boston said that should would so anything else, except paint or clean. Martha was less than pleased with her answer, and stated that Dawn had made a lot of excuses. Dawn denied Martha's statement. Again Leslie didn't back down, and threw more punches at Dawn by saying, "Dawn would not wake up, and be ready to leave for thirty minutes. We had to wait for her to get out of bed, and get ready to come with us." Martha chastised Dawn for not being ready first thing in the morning. Again, Dawn denied that she was asleep. Martha asked her if she was dressed and ready to go. Dawn used the issue of being a heavy sleeper, and sometimes didn't care if the alarm went off. The entire room roared with laughter by Dawn's ridiculous statement. Martha wanted to know why Dawn didn't ask when to be ready the next morning, but at the same time, she felt that it was unnecessary to ask that question when going through a job interview. Charles then gave a warning, "Dawn, if you keep this up, you're gonna have a lot of time to sleep." Martha stated that Dawn complains a lot, and again, the 33-year-old PR consultant denied it. Martha had heard enough, but said that she didn't want to lose her patience. She decided to cut to the chase and ask Marcela who she thought should be sent home. Without hesitation, Marcela said, "Dawn." She then turned to David, and he felt that Leslie was the most responsible. Martha then asked Jim, who struggled with a response. He thought that Leslie was responsible for the poor time management, but felt that the team should get rid of Dawn. Martha then asked Leslie, and like Marcela, she immediately said Dawn. Martha then asked Leslie who she would bring back into the conference room. Leslie said that she would bring Dawn and Bethenny. With that said, Martha sent the rest of Matchstick (Marcela, David, and Jim) up to the loft.

As the three candidates awaited their fate, Martha and her associates agreed that week after week, Team Matchstick emphasizes that Dawn is the problem. Martha felt that Dawn doesn't have a good attitude. Charles said that it was a tough call because Bethenny was responsible for the furniture, and Leslie was the team leader. Martha then asks the three candidates to return to the conference room. Martha stressed that Matchstick needs to win. Martha first turned to Leslie and felt that she had a problem communicating with her team. Leslie defended her part by saying that they could argue about team management, but felt that the reason why the team lost was because the furniture never showed up. Martha asked for Bethenny's opinion, and the 34-year-old natural foods chef argued her case by saying that Leslie is the weakest because it was the only task her team didn't complete. Although she was impressed with Leslie taking a chance with leading the team, Bethenny felt hurt because even though Leslie said that she was the strongest member of Matchstick, the only reason why she was brought in was to rid her team of Dawn. Charles felt that the reason why Bethenny was brought it was over the fact that the furniture never arrived, and that her team would've won the task if it showed up. Leslie nodded in agreement. Charles felt that everyone was waiting for the furniture to be delivered, and that Bethenny was in charge of seeing that happen. He went on by saying, "earlier on, there was a lot of time wasted before they got rolling, and that could very easily be Leslie's problem. Dawn's attitude -- that's like an old story.” Alexis stated that she liked Dawn because she herself is usually the person that everyone likes the least on the team, but no one has ever said that she didn’t work very, very hard. Dawn implied that she worked very hard on the task, but Alexis disagreed with her, after hearing from her collegues. Martha took a chance and asked Bethenny if Dawn worked really hard on the task. Bethenny said that Dawn has been the weakest link on the team throughout the entire experience. Leslie felt that Bethenny was capable of winning the next task, but felt that it's impossible if Dawn is still on the team. She elaborated by saying that she was a top sales person for each task that she was on, and that she had the desire to work for Martha Stewart, and felt that Dawn didn't want it. She said that her team was so close to victory, but Martha had heard enough. Leslie was not impressed with Leslie's poor time management. However, Martha felt that because Leslie took a chance to leave Primarius and lead an ever-so failing team, she was willing to give her another chance. She then turned to Dawn and said that this was the fourth loss that Matchstick had endured. Again, Dawn denies having anything to do with any of the losses, but Martha had heard enough of her excuses. Last, but not least, Martha spoke to Bethenny, and said that she wasn't more effective with getting the furniture delivered on time. However, Martha felt that because the design for the suite was good, Bethenny should stay. With that said, Martha wasn't pleased with Dawn's excuses, along with her inability to work as a team player, and said goodbye to her. As the three candidates filed out of the conference room, Bethenny hugged Dawn, and headed towards the loft with Leslie. Martha stated that she tried to give Dawn a chance, but couldn't. Charles assured her that she had made the right decision. Martha then stated that she wanted Matchstick to win, and feels that a reshuffling is in order. As an afterthought, Charles said that both he and Alexis will find out what happened to the missing furniture.

Martha's Letter

Dear Dawn:

I'm sorry that you must leave the Team Matchstick. But after four losses, it is clear that you are not making significant contributions to the group, and really don't fit the idea of a real employee of MSLO. We want you to succeed and we certainly wish you well. Good luck, and have a good trip home.

Sincerely,

Martha Stewart

My Opinion: I don't think it was necessary for Leslie to select two people to be brought into the conference room. I thought Dawn should've been sent home regardless, from the way she kept trying to cut people's words off, and the fact that she never contributed on any of the tasks given. It's amazing -- four times, and yet someone was fired over Dawn from the last three tasks, on account of either horrible sales pitches or sheer stupidity, whichever came first. One last thought -- Dawn was very lucky that she was sitting in front of Martha to hear those dreaded words, and not me. I would've lost respect for her from the way she would always make excuses week after week. I hate excuses, because those are the signs of people who refuse to admit that they're wrong, or feel that anytime something bad happens that it's never their fault. Also, I don't have respect for primadonnas like Dawn; I mean, none.
